Atypical Barbados with a very nice kick to it. Fruity and lightly spicy with nice caramel and roasted wood and a touch of pepper. Price to quality is very good in my mind. This is a rum that will split waters!

StefanR 18 reviews 8.0/10

The Wagemut The Origin shows Foursquare refreshingly undisguised: dried fruit, banana and caramel meet pineapple, chocolate, pepper and spicy oak. Despite a mighty 64.1%, the alcohol feels surprisingly well integrated. Dry, powerful and straight down the line; maybe not a big exotic, but damn honest stuff.

Lemmy 1 rating 8.5/10

The rum needs a bit of time in the glass, but the patience pays off. Nice notes of soft caramel, dried fruit, a light sweetness and restrained cask notes. Long finish with slightly peppery notes. Great Barbados rum with very good value for money.

Skyfly 553 reviews 8.0/10

Tasted at the festival. A really solid FSQ. As announced, no frills and no heavy cask influence sweetening it up, but no more than that either. All the classic FSQ markers are there and well balanced.

TheJackDrop 903 reviews 8.3/10

Round, indulgent on coconut, vanilla and caramel, but also nicely dry and spicy, the kind that warms your heart. A good kick at 64% that will delight fans of Barbados and Belize, to my mind! No frills, I like that. Foursquare often feels a bit heavy to me, but not here!

Dennis 1 rating 5.0/10

For me personally a completely atypical Foursquare. Very alcoholic on the nose and not well rounded. I tasted it twice to be sure. It does not linger on the palate either. There are far more solid ways into cask strength.

Fruit. Coconut. Typical Foursquare notes. […] Rather delicate, clean, quite finely made. No powerhouse. No eccentric. Simply a really good Barbados rum that shows what is left of the Wagemut you know once you take the PX out completely.

The ten years under the tropics have given it a fine structure. […] Likeable, and very good value for money. Bringing it down to around 55% would probably have made it more enjoyable to taste, though. The base is really good, a Foursquare through and through!

In the studio

Nicolas and I present it together.

I went over to Nicolas in Vienna. We put The Origin next to its two predecessors and talked about what holds the series together and where it parts ways.

The family

Three bottlings. One ingredient less at every step.

It all started with the PX-Cask, Nicolas Kröger's bestseller. What came after is a story of leaving things out.

Three bottlings compared. The PX-Cask contains Foursquare rum, PX sherry and water and comes to 40.3 percent. In the PX-Cask Cask Strength from June 2026 the water is omitted, it comes to 58.7 percent. In The Origin both PX sherry and water are omitted, leaving the pure Foursquare rum at 64.1 percent.

What the label says.

This is not the PX-Cask turned up. The PX sherry is missing here: neat, dry, powerful.

Most people who know the PX-Cask have never tried pure Foursquare at cask strength. That step is exactly what The Origin is.

Why here

Why The Origin is here

On most shop pages nearly every bottle sits at four or five stars. That helps you neither at 40 euros nor at 400. So we collect reviews from people who actually tasted the thing, the critical ones included.

With the PX-Cask we make the recipe just as visible: Foursquare rum and PX sherry are blended, which is why the EU calls it a rum-based spirit rather than rum. It carries no added sugar according to Wagemut; the sweetness comes from the sherry. All of it on its brand page, and it has been for a long time.

When Nicolas sent us a sample of The Origin, it did not take us long. Neat, transparent, ten years of full tropical ageing: pretty much what RumX stands for. What it costs has been public since 25 August: €59.90 for 0.7 litres.

The table deliberately has no ratings column: several of the reference bottles have fewer than ten ratings, and showing a score off that would be false precision. What the community says about The Origin is further up this page.

Frequently asked questions

The pure rum the Wagemut PX-Cask is built on: ten years of fully tropical ageing at Foursquare in Barbados, bottled at 64.1 % cask strength. No PX sherry, no water, no additives. This bottling will not be repeated.

Rum. The PX-Cask and the cask strength edition are rum-based spirits, because PX sherry is added to them and EU rules do not allow wine in rum. The Origin is what comes before that addition, so it is simply rum.

No. Without the PX sherry, The Origin is drier, more oak-driven and stronger. If you are after that typical PX sweetness, the PX-Cask is the better bottle.

Anyone. Since Monday, 31 August 2026, 10:00 CEST the sale has been open: no RX+, no Wagemut club membership, no RumX account. The three days before that belonged to RX+ members and the Wagemut Members Club.

By the email address you enter in the order form. That address decides, not your app account. You do not need a RumX account, you can buy as a guest. If you are in the Wagemut Members Club, use exactly the address you are registered with at Wagemut, even if it differs from the one in the RumX app. If you are an RX+ member, use the address of your RumX account.

The easiest way: add yourself to the list at the top of this page (“Notify me first”). We send you the link to the shop the moment the sale opens. If you would rather look yourself, open the product page when the sale starts: The Origin on RumX. Or buy in the RumX app. All three routes lead to the same offer.

No. The Origin is available exclusively through RumX, not in the Wagemut online shop and not in retail. The entire run goes through this one channel.

Yes. The sale has been open since 31 August and the run is finite. There will be no restock: The Origin was a one-off bottling and there will be no second run. With our Savanna co-bottling everything was gone during the presale. Once these last bottles are through, the secondary market is all that is left.

3,000 bottles of 0.7 litres, worldwide, all through RumX. It is not a single cask but a marriage of several casks, bottled at cask strength without dilution. A one-off bottling, it will not be repeated.

It was distilled and aged for the full ten years at Foursquare in Barbados, in ex-bourbon casks, pot and column still. It is bottled at Wagemut in Quickborn, Germany. So the ageing was 100 percent tropical, the bottling happens in Germany.

The rum comes from Foursquare and the bottling has Richard Seale’s knowledge and consent. His comment on it was four words: “You will be pleased.”

Across the whole EU. On top of that, one of our partners ships to Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States and Israel. Which shop serves you and what shipping costs is shown at checkout once the sale opens.
