Atypical Barbados with a very nice kick to it. Fruity and lightly spicy with nice caramel and roasted wood and a touch of pepper. Price to quality is very good in my mind. This is a rum that will split waters!
The Wagemut The Origin shows Foursquare refreshingly undisguised: dried fruit, banana and caramel meet pineapple, chocolate, pepper and spicy oak. Despite a mighty 64.1%, the alcohol feels surprisingly well integrated. Dry, powerful and straight down the line; maybe not a big exotic, but damn honest stuff.
The rum needs a bit of time in the glass, but the patience pays off. Nice notes of soft caramel, dried fruit, a light sweetness and restrained cask notes. Long finish with slightly peppery notes. Great Barbados rum with very good value for money.
Tasted at the festival. A really solid FSQ. As announced, no frills and no heavy cask influence sweetening it up, but no more than that either. All the classic FSQ markers are there and well balanced.
Round, indulgent on coconut, vanilla and caramel, but also nicely dry and spicy, the kind that warms your heart. A good kick at 64% that will delight fans of Barbados and Belize, to my mind! No frills, I like that. Foursquare often feels a bit heavy to me, but not here!
For me personally a completely atypical Foursquare. Very alcoholic on the nose and not well rounded. I tasted it twice to be sure. It does not linger on the palate either. There are far more solid ways into cask strength.

The expert review
Fruit. Coconut. Typical Foursquare notes. […] Rather delicate, clean, quite finely made. No powerhouse. No eccentric. Simply a really good Barbados rum that shows what is left of the Wagemut you know once you take the PX out completely.
From the blogs
The ten years under the tropics have given it a fine structure. […] Likeable, and very good value for money. Bringing it down to around 55% would probably have made it more enjoyable to taste, though. The base is really good, a Foursquare through and through!
In the studio
Nicolas and I present it together.
I went over to Nicolas in Vienna. We put The Origin next to its two predecessors and talked about what holds the series together and where it parts ways.
The family
Three bottlings. One ingredient less at every step.
It all started with the PX-Cask, Nicolas Kröger's bestseller. What came after is a story of leaving things out.
Three bottlings compared. The PX-Cask contains Foursquare rum, PX sherry and water and comes to 40.3 percent. In the PX-Cask Cask Strength from June 2026 the water is omitted, it comes to 58.7 percent. In The Origin both PX sherry and water are omitted, leaving the pure Foursquare rum at 64.1 percent.
| Bottling | Base | PX sherry | Water | ABV |
|---|---|---|---|---|

This is not the PX-Cask turned up. The PX sherry is missing here: neat, dry, powerful.
Most people who know the PX-Cask have never tried pure Foursquare at cask strength. That step is exactly what The Origin is.

Why here
Why The Origin is here
On most shop pages nearly every bottle sits at four or five stars. That helps you neither at 40 euros nor at 400. So we collect reviews from people who actually tasted the thing, the critical ones included.
With the PX-Cask we make the recipe just as visible: Foursquare rum and PX sherry are blended, which is why the EU calls it a rum-based spirit rather than rum. It carries no added sugar according to Wagemut; the sweetness comes from the sherry. All of it on its brand page, and it has been for a long time.
When Nicolas sent us a sample of The Origin, it did not take us long. Neat, transparent, ten years of full tropical ageing: pretty much what RumX stands for. What it costs has been public since 25 August: €59.90 for 0.7 litres.

The table deliberately has no ratings column: several of the reference bottles have fewer than ten ratings, and showing a score off that would be false precision. What the community says about The Origin is further up this page.
