Engenhos do Norte Rum Agrícola 980 Madeira
"Great nose, weak taste" is the line that keeps coming back on this Madeira agricole. The smell is rich and round — plum, dried fruit, almost like prune liqueur — and several tasters loved the leather and tobacco. Then the palate turns drier, thinner and quite short, with black currant showing up. Made from cane juice at Engenhos do Norte, aged in French ex-wine casks.

Un rhum au nez étonnant qui pourrait laisser penser à une liqueur de pruneaux, très rond et fruité. Au goût, le pruneau ressort également mais plus sec que le nez ne le laissait présager. Une finale fruitée trop courte.

A good representative from Madeira. Does not stand out particularly, but is pleasing. Very fruity on the nose. The taste then reveals a lot of blackcurrant. Very watery though.

Overall an Agricole with a great nose, but with a rather weak taste. This rum, Beneficiado 980, is produced by Engenhos do Norte in Madeira. It’s made from cane juice and Madeira is btw the only place besides the French Overseas Departments that’s is recognized as producer of Agricole by the EU. It’s a blend of rum distilled in column stills aged for 3 respectively 6 years in French ex-wine barrels as well as some aged for 21 years in French ex-Madeira wine barrels. The name, Beneficiado 980 comes from that the brand was introduced 1980 and Beneficiado means that there is some Cane Honey added to round it up.
