Rum Rarities Orator RUM - Fass #2 2016

Blind, a lot of tasters guessed wine, not rum — the red-wine cask (several called it Sherry or Armagnac) throws prunes, young oak and leather at you. On the palate it goes dry, tannic and bitter with roasted, leather and espresso notes. The recurring gripe: at 66.9% the alcohol crashes over everything, and water didn't rescue it. A curious Swiss experiment more than an easy pour.

Hot, tannic, wine-cask Swiss experiment Divisive Swiss oddity. Most found it too woody, tannic and hot, with the wine-cask influence dominating. A few enjoyed the leather-and-espresso palate; more felt the alcohol buried it.

RumX-Adventskalender, 8.12., blind. Etwas Nelke. Am Ende deutlich Haselnuss. Mal was anderes, jung, Fasstärke, Eigenproduktion aus der Schweiz. Biomelasse aus Paraguay in einen Brunello Di Montalcino Fass ausgebaut. Durchaus interessant. Danke dafür 😊

#8 RumXCalendar Blind tasting: N: dried blum, prunes, fruity, young wood, leather M: spicy, dry, roasted, smoky, prunes F: wood(oak), vanilla, dry, astringend, tannins, smoky Prediction: could be a blend, origin: quite difficult here: i would go with south america, approx. 10y and 55-60%…. Nice sample from switzerland 😱 Alcohol could be integrated much better. Not Time nor some drops of water helps… Not that type of rum i like… Nose: dried fruits (plum, prunes), fruity , vanilla, cedar wood, leather, spicy Mouth: Dry, spicy, roasted, smoky, prunes, apricot, bitter, grappa, oak Finish: dry, astringend, warm, wood(oak), vanilla, smoky, floral

Light amber…the consistency seems kinda watery. Nose: thin on the opening, with notes of grapefruit, prunes and a touch of tannins and young wood. There’s also a very subtle note of light caramel.l and vanilla Mouth: that caramel/vanilla note returns right off, followed by the acid note of the grapefruit, as the rum goes down the throat, leaving behind the wood note, along with a touch of fresh, untoasted hazelnut. Nicely warm, suggesting the ABV might be on the 55-ish, with a satisfying tingle on the tongue. Finish: I get burnt caramel, with those hazelnuts

RumXmas day 8… Some light fruity notes (mostly prune), wood and A LOT of alcohol in the nose and the mouth. More than an hour in the glass and sadly the alcohol still dominates, even with a little bit of water (not one of my habits). Would have hoped it opened up a bit more. Unfortunately not my taste. I guess they can’t all be winners 😊

This is a very woody rum, you can smell and taste the tannins. Due to the high ABV I diluted it a bit, in the hope that the fruity elements would be more noticeable, but the opposite happened: what was there on sweetness disappeared, the tannins got more noticeable and the aftertaste an acidic note. Interesting, but not a favorite.

RumX Adventskalender 8.12.21: Die Nase eher spanisch, Richtung Cuba.

Aged rum

Avg Rating 8.0/10 over 16,000 Rums

Aged rum is where the spirit earns its complexity. In a tropical warehouse a barrel loses 6 to 10 percent of its contents to evaporation every year, which is why an 8-year Caribbean rum can taste deeper than a 20-year Scotch. This page gathers every rum on RumX that has spent real time in wood, with community ratings to separate the genuinely mature from the merely dark.
