Sipped neat and given time to breathe, this is classic Caroni: rubber, tar and petrol that "creeps across the table," with black tea, dark chocolate, coffee and a sweet molasses-and-date undertone softening the industrial edge. At 60.3% it burns, so let it open. Tasters call it opulent and surprisingly floral and fruity underneath the dirt — one of the better 1997s people have poured.

Tarry, rubbery Caroni with a long finish Fans of Caroni are thrilled — heavy rubber, tar and petrol wrapped around chocolate, coffee and dark sugar, with a very long finish. Nothing for weak nerves at cask strength.

A great Caroni though very expensive. The tar and rubber are there from opening the bottle and just creeps across the table taking you into Caroni heaven. Lightly fruity with a touch of chocolate and caramel. I love the super long finish.
