Nobilis Enmore No. 5 AWM 1988

Dark chocolate, licorice and dried plum, with coffee and a smoky-fruity finish — a classic Versailles pot-still profile from old Enmore. Several tasters note surprisingly little wood and freshness for 32 years, and it drinks easy despite the complexity. The recurring gripe is body: the texture runs thin and the finish stops short of what the age promises.

Chocolate-licorice Versailles, complex but thin Widely liked as a well-rounded, easy-drinking Versailles — dark chocolate and licorice depth. Most agree it's a touch thin, and the profile won't be everyone's favorite style.

Underlines the versatility of rum. An easy sipper but still very much complexity. Especially the finish is very versatile. Nevertheless, I do not really warm up to the Mark.

... Enmore - drive distiller, now just a functional distillation device. Apparently the only wooden still in the world which is very popular. The Enmore rums have a flavour of ash, leather, heavy wood, which will delight especially the lovers of whiskey. And if in the traditional Guyanese way the producer adds a little molasses to the rum, you have a unique very distinctive and heavy rum in the bottle. One of my favourites.

A pretty decent Enmore. Fruity with nice roasted wood. Coffee, licorice and chocolate in the back. Love the smoky fruity finish.

A really great Enmore. Tastes of dark chocolate, licorice and herbs. Despite its complexity, it is extremely easy to drink. In a pleasant way with a slightly bitter finish.

On the nose: Woody, toasted, dried fruits like light plum and light apricot and light spicy notes like anise. As the rum opens up you get more bitter and earthy notes in the palate. Taste:Roasted notes, woody notes, dried fruits and light licorice notes at first. Then you get little bit herbal and earthy notes, mouthfeel changes little bit to a bitter side and you get some coffee notes in there too. The abv and intensity could be a little bit higher Finish: Roasted, smoky, woody, light herbal and earthy notes. Little bit of dried fruits and light coffee notes. I liked the fruity notes that you get at first. Once the rum opened up, i feel like the herbal and earthy notes took over the palate perhaps too much and made the overall palate too bitter.

On the nose, I find the rum fresh and fruity. On the palate initially sweetish, mild then somewhat woody and in the course slightly astringent and becoming bitter. The finish is relatively short! A fine rum

Thanks to Armin for the sample! I couldn't wait to try this old Versailles, especially such unusual mark. It's very complex, I get instantly the Versailles markers, especially the dried plum. It also has a fresh aspect, anis and spices (I'm thinking caraway for some reason), moka and some tropical citrus (lime perhaps). The main downside is the texture, I wished it was thicker, and the finale could be longer too. Overall it's still an very good rum.

Enmore

Avg Rating 8.8/10 over 210 Rums

Enmore gave the world the last wooden Coffey still, built here around 1880 and still running at Diamond. It is also one of only two Guyanese estates where you can actually buy rum distilled while the place was open: 17 vintages between 1962 and its closure in April 1994. On most Demerara pages that sentence is not true.
