Velier Saint James Brut de fût 2001
Sip this one neat and give it a few minutes in the glass. It's a woody, spicy old agricole with cherry and dried plum, tobacco, leather and licorice, plus red fruit that's unusual for the style. Several tasters loved the fruit and integration; a few found the oak a touch astringent and the finish a bit short. The 50.3% keeps everything lively.
The community says- Red fruit and cherry
- Well-integrated alcohol
- But: Oak can turn bitter

How does Velier Saint James Brut de fût 2001 taste?
Aggregated from 56 community reviews.
Woody, red-fruited aged agricole sipper Most people rate this a very good aged Martinique agricole — intense, woody, full of red fruit and tobacco. The recurring gripe is oak bitterness and, for some, a finish that fades fast.

Oh, it's so good! Very nice balance of yellow fruit and barrel influence! But not too round, very complex, the barrel influence dominates somewhat.
Review by Giorgio Garotti
A really intense saint james that retains its characteristic notes of red fruits, coffee, dark chocolate and tobacco! Throughout the tasting you are accompanied by a nice citrus note of lime and the cask is well integrated!
Review by Joachim Guger
Full, round Agricole with pronounced wood maturity and - uncharacteristically for an Agricole - red fruits like cherry.Very well integrated alcohol. Overall very good.

Great Agricole. Nice barrel influence. On the palate red fruit and nice spice.

Lovely release and I especially like the flavours in the empty glass where the chocolate and spice stand out. Nice and intense nose and palate.

Schön hoher ABV. Das treibt die Aromen. Die Nase ist kräftig und intensiv. Holzig-würzig-fruchtig.

I am continuing my little St. James flight, and find this one a bit better than the 14yo variant I tried earlier. It is less herbal, but has more fruit (especially with some drops of water).

Good Saint James. I really preferred the nose, very woody but also very greedy. In the mouth it's good, sweet because the alcohol is super well integrated. Marked by the wood, maybe a bit too much. Otherwise what is a pity is the lack of length. It passes right away...

I like it a lot, but doesn't quite come close to the phenomenal Corman Collins 2002 bottling.

Really cool Saint James brut de fut! Surprisingly little wood and lots of freshness and fruit!

--- English: Saint James Velier Brut de Fût 2001 is a limited edition agricole rum from Martinique, distilled in 2001 and bottled unfiltered and without added sugar. It is a true "brut de fût" rum, meaning it is cask strength, preserving its full intensity and complexity. The nose is strongly woody, with prominent glue-like notes, a characteristic of long-aged agricole rums. There are also subtle hints of spice and minerality, adding further depth. On the palate, it is intense and robust, with dominant sweet notes balanced by woody and spicy elements. The sweetness is not overwhelming but naturally complements the rum’s structure. Oak tones gradually develop, leaving a long, dry, and complex finish. When I first smelled it, it was very woody, with a hint of something like leather or oriental wood, spices...very intense taste at first taste...a bit like medicine - cough drops. For being 18 years old and 50% I was expecting a smoother expression, but now I realize it's agricole...aha. After aging for a while in the glass, the expression softens a bit and the fullness and woodiness comes out...
