Velier Hampden The Younger LROK 2016
Most people rate this a great first step into Hampden: banana, pineapple and that classic glue-and-varnish funk, without the punch of the cask-strength LROKs. The recurring gripe is body — several tasters find it a touch thin and the finish short for a Hampden, likely down to the young age and 47%. Still, funk fans keep coming back to it.

Nice rum although the overproof remains clearly the best.

Great nose . After taste like cognac. Didn’t like it solo but good mixed.
Review by Stefan Persson
This is a great bottling from Velier at an affordable price. The nose is fruity with aromas of esters, pineapple, banana, and citrus. On the palate, it’s fruity, funky, and spicy with flavors of esters and pineapple. The finish is long, fruity, spicy, fresh, dry, and woody.

Typical Jamaican, both in smell and taste. Varnish, esters, very ripe fruit on the nose. no big surprise on the palate, except for its freshness. short finish, but it's a young rum, so not surprising in my opinion. Nice to start a Hampden line-up. Edit 05/02/2022: every time I come back to it, I tell myself that this first batch of Younger is a real success. I haven't had the opportunity to taste anything this good for the same price in all of 2021. Gosh, it's a good way to start a little tasting. Edit 09/2023: tasted again and sensations confirmed

Wonderful rum to dive into the world of Hampden. Due to the reduction a real easy sipper.
Review by crazyforgoodbooze
mega fruity, oily and intense, yet a tasty easy sipper for a Jamaican. a clear upgrade to the previous Hampden estate 46%. PLV top! out the back it is a bit very dry and woody becoming, with a bit of a short finish, but then gets an exciting slightly salty note and strawberry jam along with just the right amount of esters. Here a barrel strength would be really exciting. Tip: this is an absolute board for a Kingston Negroni!🙌

Thinking about the cost this is a very good rum. Fruity and funky from the nose to the finish. I really like the clove that comes in the finish.

8,4:On the nose, esters, solvents, varnish, funky, fermented tropical fruits like banana and pineapple, red fruits, briny olive, slightly roasted, nutty wood, spicy, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, green apple is out, grassy molasses, some rubber, marzipan, vanilla, slight smokiness and confectionery. 8,4:On the palate, the attack is funky with esters, rubber, tropical fruits like pineapple and banana, red fruits, briny olive, grass, the wood is slightly roasted with cream toffee, pastry, cookie dough, spicy, dry.The molasses is sweet with honey, slightly herbaceous, some hints of licorice are present. 8,1:The finish is medium long, dry and tannic, creamy, fruity, spicy with allspice, oaky and smoky. Edit:15.3.26

Given the price and age a good rum !The only thing that bothers a bit...for me he is too light or thin
Review by HenryL
Very nice fruity smellIn the mouth velvety soft, also reminds of the taste a bit of honey. Paired with a nice fruit, direction citrus, green apple, but also mango and the typical pineapple-banana combination.Overall a fresh Hampden version, I like it, but is a bit too perfumed for my taste.

Sehr gute Preisleistung.

The Younger remains and is simply a good mixer, both in MaiTai and in CubaLibre. It's also usually better on its own than some others. But I still prefer it as a mixer. For me, it's simply a rum that belongs in the household.

I have already tried the longer aged cousin and found it a bit overpriced in regards to value for money. This is a bit cheaper, and a bit more raw. The nose is quite present, I am sipping this on the balcony and smelled it from the glass on the table already when standing in the door. Ananas and Esters are very present, but also a surprising strong alcoholic part. All of this translates well onto the palate, but I found it quite sharp with the alcohol, honestly, for its "low" ABV compared to other barrel proof offerings. A minimal drop of water improved this a bit, the Ananas and a bit of rotten fruit get pronounced and the sharpness mellowed. It stays, however, very dry, what I think is a general characteristic of LROK. The finish is medium to long, and has finally a woody note.

VSGB 😙Nose: very fruity with ripe pineapple, lemon and green apple and at the same time vinegar, has almost something of sweat or older socks. This is then matched by the buttery, slightly going into the cheesy. It's a bit soapy, towards polish and has a tart sweetness of maple syrup, yet hiding behind the sock.Palate: less fruity than on the nose, more metallic, bitter, with lime zest and some iodine. Very dry. A slight umami note with some pepper. Goes in the direction of resin. In the medium-long finish remains lime zest, umami and some green tea. At the very end even slightly eel or mackerel (can that be? I must check another time!)LROK is in itself a nice Mark, however, seems the here by its young age and the reduction to 47% somewhat immature....

Beautiful round nose with lots of fermented and sour fruit, complemented by floral notes such as flower and tobacco. The LROK pith is very complex due to its ester composition! In the mouth it changes to a dry, spicy, smoky and woody experience complemented by fruit. Finishes with peppery spiciness, sweet sugar cane, spice, sour fruit again and tobacco. Overall, I like this quite a bit.

On the nose you can easily tell this is a funky Jamaican rum with the pineapple and banana that carry throughout the palate and finish. To me the best part this rum is the finish as the rum mellows into caramalized banana with wood and vanilla notes
Review by Skyfly
A good classic that brings all the typical markers. For me personally, the rum is a bit too thin despite the many aromas – it feels a bit watered down without actually being watered down. The value for money is of course great.

2nd tasting (blind) after a 1st where I had not appreciated more than that. The nose attacks on solvents and smoke then after a good aeration arrive finally more nice notes of pineapple, vanilla of sugar and a buttered side, of what to make a good cake.In mouth we find the same greedy notes but the banana replaced the pineapple and a minty freshness includes the whole and persists on the final.A 2nd tasting which makes me change opinion on this rum, it needed a long aeration.
