Rum Nation Enmore Small Batch Rare Rums 1997

Sipped neat, this 23-year Enmore from Guyana pours out oily and full, with orange, vanilla, wood and a smoky, spicy edge. The talking point is a peated whisky-cask finish that sits on top of the old pot-still rum. A few tasters found the peat well integrated but still one step too far; others just didn't want whisky smoke in their Enmore.

How does Rum Nation Enmore Small Batch Rare Rums 1997 taste?

Old oily Enmore with a peated whisky finish Genuinely divisive. The base is a lovely oily old Enmore, but the peated whisky finish overrides the rest — several regulars felt it pulled the rum out of balance.

I was a bit disappointed because these rare releases are usually pretty good. This one however fell outside the normal range and is a bit out of balance in my mind. I'd say their regular Small Batch Rare Rums Enmore is better. Price to quality is off on this one by quite a margin actually.

Oha, there must have been a whiskey finish involved. It's not my taste, but the finish is at least discreet and not too ostentatious.

Thanks to the rum nation stand! An enmore in the same vein as the 1997/2016. Except that the Sherry cask has been replaced by a peaty finish whisky. And personally it is not for me. I think it's a shame to change the essence of these old enmore by adding peat... I hope it will find its audience because the peat does not erase everything else, it is well integrated, not omnipresent, but too much for me.
