El Ron del Artesano Virgin Oak Cask 2009

Best sipped neat, where its cask-strength kick has room to settle. This is a dry Panama column-still rum aged in fresh American oak, so the wood does most of the talking: vanilla, cinnamon and pepper, with a honeyed sweetness rounding out the palate and a whiff of glue and solvent on the nose. Several tasters called it honest and easy-drinking, but not one to overthink.

Bought at the 10th GRF in Berlin. Even if boss Sebastian Lauinger is a very likeable guy, I was not a big fan so far, because I generally do not particularly like finishes and rather stand on cask strength. Fittingly, Sebastian was able to present me this Virgin Oak at his booth, which I liked immediately and above all also has an unbeatable PLV. Clearly in the Spanish style from Panama (honey, caramel, vanilla), this bottling shows how storage off the usual bourbon casks looks and what pure wood does. Young, woody and spicy - tastes good!

Richtig guter Virgin oak cask mit ordentlich Lösungsmittel in der Nase, viel pfefferiger Würze aber einer angenehmen Honigsüsse am Gaumen. Ein schöner Tropfen mit angenehm weichem Finish 👍

This one is actually quite special from Artesano. Not diluted and no wine barrel or anything. No, cask strength and Virgin Oak, then 11 years. Was reason enough to take this bottle on the 10th GRF.Nose: initially strong and somewhat pungent alcohol. Behind that, though, nice smoky woody spicy and creamy fruity aromas. On the one hand there is light tobacco with vanilla on the other creamy taffy with coconut milk, lemon and apple. A resinous freshness with a deep nasal pull. 80Palate: pleasantly powerful. Initially bitter-salty and woody-spicy. Red pepper with vanilla, almost some umami. Then goes towards pecan, has a tart sweetness, like currant and orange peel and closes with blackberry. Back nutty with light umami and wood. 82Must feel your way, then good.

A fine drop but also not special. With this intense cask influence it could have been a whisky as well.

Super PLV.

Tasted as a 5cl sample.First of all, the 55.9% are perfectly hidden. Neither on the nose nor on the palate to make out. Otherwise, I would have liked more intensity overall. Smell and taste are quite similar. Honey, vanilla, wood and some cinnamon. Uncomplicated rum, in which unfortunately the limit of the flavors to be discovered is quickly reached.Fortunately, I tried the rum as a sample, and not directly bought ne bottle. Not to be misunderstood, it is tasty, but you look for complexity in vain.Edit: Second tasting revealed no new notes, and also in terms of complexity rather at the lower end of the rum food chain. Crosstasting with the other cask finishes could, however, provide a little more tension.
