Fiji Rum & Co Lautoka 2004

Most tasters call this a pleasant surprise — an easygoing sipper that punches above its 46%. The Muscat cask leaves nougat, raisins and roasted chestnut on the nose, with smoky wood and nuts on the palate. Not hugely complex, but round and drinkable. One reviewer found it just too sweet and woody, and wine-cask skeptics may pass. Whisky drinkers tend to like this one.

Surprisingly complex tropical matured Fiji rum that comes despite the only 46% not too thin. Nice combination of smoke, wine influence from the muscatel finish and slightly burnt caramel, tropical fruits like papaya, some mocha and pepper. Very round!

Discovered this older sample. I didn't really have any great expectations, but I was pleasantly surprised. The muscatel barrel has really made a difference here. Nougat, raisins and roasted chestnuts on the nose. This compensates quite well for the rather low ABV. Uncomplicated and tasty on the palate. All in all, a good, relaxed sipper.

Probably by its already smoky profile an ideal partner to the cigar. The finish also provides a slight sweet impact with neat flavors of dried fruit.

A nice surprise this one. It did taste quite hot for its 46%, but went to a smooth ride over the palate soon afterwards. It is not overly complex, but has enough to it to qualify as a decent sipper. I am not so much into most wine cask finishes and would not buy this while there are so many other options, but it still is good.

An insider tip for whisky drinkers. Well balanced with a clear focus on dark aromas of smoky wood and nuts.

Aromas of dried fruit and smoky wood. In the background there are still nuances of whiskey and a subtle sweetness that certainly comes from the muscatel barrel.

Aged rum

Avg Rating 8.0/10 over 16,000 Rums

Aged rum is where the spirit earns its complexity. In a tropical warehouse a barrel loses 6 to 10 percent of its contents to evaporation every year, which is why an 8-year Caribbean rum can taste deeper than a 20-year Scotch. This page gathers every rum on RumX that has spent real time in wood, with community ratings to separate the genuinely mature from the merely dark.
