Foursquare ECS XV Redoutable
"One of the best ECS" for some, average Foursquare for others — but almost everyone agrees it hits hard. Expect coconut, vanilla, dried fruit and a whiff of glue, then a spicy, woody palate with dark chocolate and a long warming finish. The Madeira cask stays subtle. At 61% the alcohol bites; a few tasters want more depth "for the price."

How does Foursquare ECS XV Redoutable taste?
Aggregated from 189 community reviews.
Intense, woody Foursquare with faint Madeira Most call it a very good, intense Foursquare with a long finish — one of the better ECS releases. The catch: the heat is loud and the Madeira influence is faint.

Madeira cask + Barbados = pure delight. Chocolate, honey, caramel, wine, barrel, all kinds of fruit. Full power. Also a bit roasted on the palate. Very balanced, complex, and very smooth. For me, one of the better/best Foursquare ECS I've had in the glass so far.

Yummy! Really good, would love to A-B test this one against the Plenipotenziario one day. Still good on it’s own and really glad that I have more of those precious drops. - Just as good on a Tuesday 😋 - And on a Monday too 🤪 - Long time sine last time, still really good. - 250812: Long time sine last time but… yummy as expected. - 260709: Tasing among friends.

Wonderful rum from the Foursquare distillery! Spicy, full-bodied and delicious. In the nose surprise floral notes, which I did not know from Foursquare so. From the profile it goes towards really good Tropical Guyana Column! Very good!

24.11.2025 Another sample to finish and now I will have to open the bottle if I want some more. Still a pretty good release. ------------ I just picked up this one with a trunk full of other rums yesterday and we just had to sample it in the evening. I have to admit that we had to sample it twice, just to make sure we weren't wrong :-) The nose is wonderful and fruity with vanilla and brown sugar. In the back there is notes of the barrel and some flowers. The palate is very complex and well balanced and continues the nose with fruits and chocolate. The i get oak and way back some polish or varnish. The finish is very long, warm and has roasted barrel and in the back some marzipan.

Yes, the end of the day and a real highlight. This Foursquare has vanilla, caramel, coconut and glue on the nose. Continues on the palate. Thanks Tim for the sample, very tasty.

Review by zabo
Edit: I particularly like the interplay of the Bourbon and Madeira cask, which harmonizes very well and doesn't take over the dominance. Franconian Tasting Course One of the better ECS. Above the average of the other bottlings.
Review by Jakob
Unfortunately a little sharp on the palate again, even after more than an hour of breathing in the glass. The Madeira influence remains rather restrained, the "big brother" Destino plays in a different league. Rather average for Foursquare.

Typical profile we all know from Foursquare but the Madeira finish is not of my taste

Another masterstroke.

Faithful to its productions. Very tasty. A treat 😊😍 It's easy to taste, with great length... it's one of my favorites along with the Plenipo. Du coup c'est me 2 eme bouteille 😂😂 A sure bet

Fruit and dark chocolate alternate on the nose. But fruit and an indefinable floral note can also be detected. Powerfully spicy in the mouth, wood and dark chocolate. Great complexity and perfectly integrated alcohol. Unfortunately, the finish is only medium-long and beautifully dry with a slight peppery note. I like it very much!
Review by Jan Lu
A Foursquare that stands out a little. Not as fruity as I'm used to. Very spicy and slightly dry in taste. The finish is long and balanced. I like it, it doesn't taste like any other.
Review by Jussi Piirainen
On the nose: Vanilla, coconut and burnt sugar/caramel notes as main notes. Woody notes. Dried fruits like raisins Taste: Intense and full bodied. Vanilla and coconut. Then you get light cocoa/chocolate notes. Light caramel notes. Balanced. Finish: Vanilla, woody and roasted notes. Spicy notes like light nutmeg and light peppery notes. Good intensity all the way to the end. Dry finish. I would call this a "budget friendly Velier Foursquare release" and i mean it in a good way. In the ECS releases, this rum stands out in intensity level compared to other due the high(er?) abv than others and that intensity level worked better for me than some of the Velier Foursquare releases that i have tried so far.
Review by Boletus
Review by TheRhumhoe
This "fearsome" Foursquare begins with an intense, lively nose reminiscent of Barbados in all its forms: coconut, banana, dried fruit, sweet spices, gourmet wood, caramel, brown sugar and a touch of glue stimulate the nostrils. It's no surprise, but the profile is round, powerful and well-crafted. The attack on the palate is more intense, with fruit, spices and wood. There's a heavy dose of the caramelized sweetness so characteristic of Foursquare, which gives this wine a very easy-drinking, but no less expressive profile. Notes of walnut, dark chocolate and leather add depth on the palate. The alcohol is well integrated. The finish is long and warm, spicy and roasted, with hints of cask, nutmeg, vanilla, pepper, chili, toast and burnt sugar. Then come aromas of nougat, caramel, honey, dried fruit, banana and coconut, followed by chocolate. A lovely Foursquare that brilliantly combines roundness and intensity.

beautiful FS, unusual are the floral notes on the nose. On a par with the Shibbo.
Review by Beancheese
Surprised to say this disappointed me a little…maybe I was a victim of high expectations? Maybe the contrast of what I had leading up to it? End of the day, this just didn’t leave an impression although I didn’t have big ‘negatives’. Would love to try this again someday.

Magnifique ! Superbe profil aromatique, FS hyper subtile et élégant. Top
Review by Frank
Nose: the first 4 impressive smells are coconut, vanilla, caramel and barrel. Also seems slightly smoky or toasted. The alcohol bites a little (clear, 61%). There is some sweetness coming from cherry and apple. Reminiscent of Calvados. The typical floral is there too.Palate: strong spicy and fruity. Coconut again leads the way. Woody and toasty it comes and brings something bitter. I have nutmeg, vanilla and some clove. It's intensely floral, almost perfumed, and again has something caramelized. Cherry and apple also confirm.A good foursqare
Review by Stylo
Richard Seale doesn’t miss one! Every release is always a great experience..this one adds to the traditional FS profile (fruits like apple, mango and papaya with the vanilla and pepper) a sweeter flavor of caramel and burnt sugar.
Review by tojo
Pleasant FS with typical aromas of wood, vanilla, coconut and banana. More spice and red fruit on the palate. Not completely convincing - also due to the only moderately integrated alcohol.
Review by Serge
From the Foursquare sample set, which I ordered as a non-fan so far my favorite.
Review by Santo
The Foursquare madeire marriage is much more harmonious than with sherry casks.
Review by Henry Davies
A really intense Foursquare ECS, it picks you up and smashes you in the face in a way few Foursquare rums do. Nose has banana and raisin notes with a hint of something glue like, the mouth feel is somewhat spicy with a long and lingering finish that gently tapers into milk chocolate notes. It’s not quite the best ECS to my palate but when reflecting on previous tastings the intensity and complexity is really quite memorable, and as a result it has crept up in my rankings over time
Review by Piotr Ignasiak
Had it side by side with Sovereignty. At first had a sharper nose, after 30 or 40 minutes i got this nice buttery brioche note. After Sovereignty this tasted much more delicate, less oak forward, today it suited me more.
Review by crazyforgoodbooze
Really nice nose of fully ripe papaya, banana, apricot and peaches, plus some honey and toasted wood. Taste significantly drier and woodier than the nose suggests, with a slight passion fruit acidity, but then again mainly wood, coffee, caramel and spices. Very tasty me but Personally not complex enough for the price. Rather something one-dimensional.have I hoped for more of...
Review by Tom Buteneers
Compared to the 2008 ECS, this one is rounder and (even) more balanced. The alcohol is a bit better integrated and the whole is more elegant. That's why I think it scores just a little higher.

Sehr lecker!

Quite great, coriander seed and citrus pepper notes, mild sweetness, vanilla, raisins, caramel. Satisfied all around.

... Foursquare je destilerka z Barbadosu produkujici uzasne rumy ke kazdodennimu popijeni. Je to rum, ktery oceni zejmena rumari, kteri maji plne zuby cukru a hledaji jemny, nasladly rum plny kokosu, vanilky, cokolady a karamelu. Proste prijemne a nijak agresivni chute.
Review by Gyuli
Scent: The volatilizing alcohol makes it feel like a nail polish scent. A little solvent and bourbon whiskey-like vanilla dominate. As you continue to sniff, you'll find plums, currants, cherry-like fruits, and, to a lesser extent, nuts like walnuts and almonds. Taste: Salty and dry on the palate, quite intense. It tastes like eating flowers that are about to wilt, with raisins and oak dominating. The spice of the oak is strong and masks the notes somewhat. Finish: Definitely very spicy, but not in an unpleasant way. After a long, spicy finish, the vanilla and raisins of the bourbon I mentioned earlier remain. The finish is refreshing and bright.

Guter Tropfen, typischer Foursquare.

28/01/2026: tasting at home. One of my favorite ECS releases to date. The ex-madeira influence makes this a very enjoyable, tasty, thick experience. Not super different from other Foursquares, but just very good.
Review by Kasper
Very nice. Like it a lot. Full power but with a very nice sweetness. Mostly Caramelized but not too much. I get mostly orange and orange peel. Candied.
Review by Rene Pfeiffer
Bißchen alkoholisch, aber durchaus lecker.
Review by Jacques etdom

Review by TheCelticRumFan
Nose: Orange zest, raisins, tobacco, vanilla, varnish, woody, cherry Mouth: Pineapple, burnt sugar, cinnamon, grapes, raisins, menthol, floral Finish: Flavour and heat gradually build and descend to a nice lengthy finish Really tasty rum and probably my favourite ECS that I have tried. Very full flavour and character. Very strong on the palate and lingers for a good amount of time. Exactly what you want from a decent rum.
Review by Yves Remord
A really interesting rum for its ease of drinking. Despite being over 60 degrees, the ethanol really melts. A round, fat rum with a clearly identifiable marzipan identity. I recommend it!
Review by Moss Cail
No real new notes here for me, just more Foursquare.
Review by Madi Dromamad
