Diplomático No. 3 Pot Still Rum 2010
Here's the twist: this is a pot still rum that mostly doesn't taste like one. Undosed and lighter-bodied than you'd expect, it leans woody and clinical, with cherry, caramel, vanilla and a spicy oak edge. Several tasters say to let it rest 10-15 minutes or the alcohol and disinfectant nose dominate. After that, wood, cask and cherry open up nicely.

Tasting 22-03-2023 Nosing this isn so woody and heavy on the oak ... Not much else but char but kinda expected from a pot still ... Tasting this was a incredibly light diplomatico reserva notes of the chocolate but without the heavy sweetness .. this rum is quite upsetting as shows what they can do without the dosing ... The woodyness in the nose disappeared in the tasting which is incredible ... This is a really solid rum , unsure on price point but still delicious

This little rum lulls the drinker into a false sense of well-being with its gentle aroma of sweet honey-kissed nectar. This abruptly ends when you taste the rum. The togue is quickly abused by the heat and spice of this angry little rum, determined to make your experience a lasting one for the wrong reasons.

Pot-still Spanish, lots of tobacco, probably a good accompaniment to a cigar, low dosage, good drinking strength.Good Ron.

It's a solid run, nice to sip, but nothing that requires attention while doing it. Most dominant is the wood influence, while all other notes are quite timid and do need effort to be found. This goes especially for the nose, where I had at first the impression of not smelling anything besides wood. It is a nice rum, nonetheless, but overall will be a bit shallow for those that seek flavorful and complex sippers. And it has not much that shows it pot still origin.

Price to quality on this bottle is very good. Make sure to rest it for at least 15 minutes or it will come on too strong, once rested it is a very nice rum. The nose is fruity with caramel, vanilla, chocolate and light wood. The palate is lightly bitter with roasted wood, fruits, spices and caramel. The finish is medium long and lightly bitter with wood, dried fruit and chocolate. Try to leave the empty glass for a few hours and then whif it again to really enjoy the spices and chocolate.

My last Botucal was some time ago. The rum has a beautiful color in the glass. The nose is fruity, spicy, woody, as well as vanilla and caramel. The taste matches the nose with an alcoholic spiciness and sweetness. The finish is followed by spiciness and a bitter note. I was pleasantly surprised by this rum.

Sorry, not a fan straight up. It’s harsh, aggressive, and not nice. Non existent finish, apart from the aggressive harshness. So glad this was a sample bottle. Could work in a cocktail, but I have no idea which one. Not for me.

Now we are talking the last of the distillery collection-pot still. Nose:copper/metal underlined with sweetness and wood. Tropical fruits. Taste is sweet during the first contact, as you swallow it gets a bitter and wood goes into forefront. After while it goes away&you can taste the typical notes of venezuela-vanilla/fruits. This one, being a pot still rum is a little bit heavier than rest of its siblings and bears more taste & due to that the aftertaste is longer, really long which is great if you like the taste. Even though I had a sample of all 3 I am not sure if I would go for the bottle. Maybe pot still in discount. If you want to try pure Diplo., this is the way. Brief Recap: 1-Lighter dilluted&sweet vanilla 2-spicier still sweet more wood 3-Sweet oaky&most flavour. Your choice.

The last part of the triplet story from Venezuela. This time the creator is a respectful pot still. The aroma is fruity, dominated by cherry, a little oak and vanilla. Still a sweet profile on the palate and a clear winner from the trio. This time the taste pretty much follows the aroma. And finally the finish. Pleasant.

The nose is light with some wood and vanilla notes. On the palate is doesn’t feel like a pot still expression, with some of the lightness and clinical notes a Spanish style column still rum exhibit. There is spice, some further wood and caramel but in a thin and somewhat lacking package. The finish is short with some chocolate and light spicy elements. It’s not super well integrated and overall comes away as feeling a bit thin and unexciting. The lack of dosage is noticeable compared to Diplomatico RE but it’s not necessarily the better for it. Overall it’s a hard one to get excited about

I hate and like this rum which makes me annoyed. I love that diplomatico widened their horizons with the distillery collection and in this case a copper pot still. I love that this is not dosed (seriously diplomatico, do better on that). However, whereas a pot still often adds body to a rum it does not seem to work that effect here, it remains quite light bodied. Also, like all venezuekans it dissipates from the tongue like it doesn’t want to be there. And yet, despite these misgivings I want to reward them for innovating and making just a very decent spanish style rum.

Ein typischer „passt gut zu dunkler Schokolade“ Rum. Intensive und kräftige Würze, die sich aber doch sehr angenehm trinkt.
Review by Robert M.

Quite nice on the nose, barrel, vanilla and tropical, dried fruit. Same when tasting along with some spice. Medium long finish

A more interesting expression than is typical from Destilerías Unidas; a little acetone and nondescript fruit joins the more standard oak and toasted sugar on the nose. On the palate more of the same with a distinct note of sour cherry, and a spicier oak.

In April 2022, I attended a Botucal rum tasting with my friend Enrico at Cigarren Baydar & Sahin GmbH in Essen. Brand Ambassador Peter S. did a great job guiding us through the evening. Good cigars and a very tasty buffet rounded off a great evening. Since then, I have really appreciated the stuff from BOTUCAL.
