Tar, burnt wood and a whiff of solvent up front, with vanilla, dark chocolate and faint coffee underneath. This is a 1984 Caroni from Velier at cask strength, 24 years old. Most tasters love the mahogany color and complex nose, but several call the palate heavily woody and "way too bitter." Light on classic Caroni fruit compared to other releases.

Tarry, very woody old Caroni, divisive palate A genuinely complex old Caroni people respect, but the wood tips into bitter for several drinkers. Beautiful nose, divisive palate — not the legendary one in this lineup.

#4221 19.08.2023 we had our yearly meeting among old friends. When we do this once a year its without partners, cellphones and other gadgets. Just some nice rums, a piece of paper and a pen and most fun of all, a blind tasting. The theme of 2023 was Caroni and we had a great time and spend no less then 10 hours talking and tasting. Another Hammer on the table and the last one of the batch. Light on the Caroni notes but a very well balanced profile. Medium fruity with nice spices and roasted wood notes balancing on burnt wood notes. Draws really nice curtains in the glass and the empty glass has some chocolate and light caramel notes.

Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: Inspiring color - deepest mahogany with great gold reflections in the glass. In fact, just looking into the tasting glass is fun. On the palate, pronounced tar and petrol notes. In addition, fine wood, subtle berry aromas and dark spices. On the palate, there is a rich HTR profile, pronounced wood notes that transition into bitterness, showing hints of dark chocolate and coffee. Again, slight hints of tropical fruit, though much less pronounced than the second 1984 release.
