CDI Caroni Trinidad 1998
Sip this one neat and slow — at 57.5% it's built for a tasting glass, not cola. You get the classic Caroni tar, rubber and smoke, but a spell in whisky casks pushes it toward peaty, malty territory. Several tasters call it "Caroni meets whisky," with charred oak, dried apricot and licorice. Divisive: some find it dirty and unbalanced, others enjoy the depth.

Solides HTR-Profil, das die Typologie des 1998er Jahrgangs schön widerspiegelt. Insgesamt ein wenig zu zurückhaltend, das Aromenspiel ist jedoch sehr ausgewogen und balanciert, einzig die Kraft geht dem Destillat ein wenig ab. Angenehm zu trinken.

The nose is a little like the Caroni 1996 Overseas RX1578, with an agricultural edge. But there's spice here, green and pink pepper, mild curry and considerably more vivacity. The yellow fruit hints at machine shop if you look hard enough. The palate is expressive, full of aromas, with a clean but rather light atelier. Then fruit, pear and unripe pineapple arrive with a hint of acidity. This fine attack is diluted fairly quickly, and the finish lingers on empyreumatic notes of machine oil and tar. The finish is average for a Caroni and the aromas are a little weak. The other aromas are beautiful and complex, especially in the empty glass. I'm discovering a fine rum with everything it takes to please, but it's a far cry from the best Caronis.

8,7:On the nose, the first impression we get is fruity with dried apricots, the wood is charred, smoky with caramel, bacon, malt, meaty, salty, the barrel impact is strong, there are also roasted nuts.The molasses is flowery, some tar is present. On aeration, berries and dried figs arise, pastry, metallic and medicinal tones, the molasses becomes earthy, herbaceous, dark with licorice. 8,8:On the palate, we have a delightful attack, creamy, candied with toasted oak, smoky, charred wood with caramel, dark chocolate, later leather and roasted nuts, industrial notes like rubber are quickly spotted, some metallic patina, later tar and bicycle tube, the fruits are dried, yellow and tropical, as the molasses is at first flowery, then earthy with peat, herbaceous and dark with licorice and black tea. 8,7;The finish is long, tannic, dry, as the palate notes continue their journey..

A pretty good Caroni but the price does not match the quality. I know the Caroni barrels are running out, but still the price is too high in my mind. Typical Caroni with added wood and smoke and a medium finish.

Nose feels tied up and while it is quite intensive, there is not too much expression to it. Same holds true overall. There are just not as many layers as you are used to in a (good) Caroni.

Große Überraschung, Caroni meets Whisky? Neben eindeutigen Caroni-Noten eine enorm rauchige, torfige Note, die im Abgang ein röstig-malziges Aroma hinterlässt. Braucht man das, bei einem Caroni für >300€? Meine klare Meinung: Nein! Unabhängig des großen Namens und des Preises trotzdem ein mehr als ordentlicher Rum, der mit tollen Aromen und tiefer Komplexität aufwartet.

Le nez est très Boisé et fumé. Le tout englobé par les hydrocarbures typiques de la distillerie mais en moindre mesure que d'accoutumé. En bouche, c'est déséquilibré. On y trouve du boisé fumé…toasté même ! Peu de fruité mais de la tourbe. La finale est moyenne voire décevante sur le cuir avec une amertume. Pas assez intense de ce que l’on attend d’un Caroni. Et ce profil tourbé/malté ne me plait pas trop. Il s’est fait bouffé littéralement lors de cette dégustation par le délicieux Gust Demerara 2002 !

At the beginning, the rum seemed to me very unbalanced: the nose is promising with strong Caroni profile and sweetness but in the mouth dominate bitterness and wood. Blind one could think to have an Islay whiskey in front of him (Ardbeg sends his regards!). The finish is eternally long and is also dominated by oak and bitters. Once you get used to it, the rum seems more harmonious and other flavors flash up.

ich bin einfach kein Caroni Fan, dieser ist keine Ausnahme, mir persönlich zu dreckig und metallisch. desweiteren hätte ich mir gewünscht vorher zu wissen dass der Rum die Hälfte der Zeit in Whisky Fässern lag, was natürlich das torfig rauchige erheblich verstärkt. für Fans klassischer dreckiger caronis aber dennoch eine Bereicherung.
