Velier Neisson 70th Anniversary 2005
Roasted hazelnuts, warm vanilla and a whiff of glue lead into leather, dried apricot and dark chocolate, all wrapped around fresh sugarcane. Aged 12 years at 51.3%, this Neisson from Velier reads like an old bourbon that grew tropical fruit. Most tasters call it beautifully balanced and endlessly complex; a couple find a sharp sourness they can't get past.

Superb nose of wood and vanilla. Vegetal freshness, leather, the whole seems very soft. Light, suave entry on the palate. The wood quickly takes over before the rum takes full possession of the palate. Pepper, leather, sweet fruit, it's superb. Just the right spiciness. Warm, woody finish. Leather and tobacco rounded out by a lovely brown sugar. Magnificent!

Insanely great Agricole. Has very strong parallels to high-end Bourbons. My reference from Martinique!

Smooth, integrated, but sour. I dont like sour rums

A long sought sample! I am curious...Very oily, thick streaks. In the nose honey, the Neisson typical cookies, citrus give freshness. Very nice sticky notes. Various spices. Complex and layered. In the mouth it feels a bit thin at first, then a potpourri of citrus hits. In the finish then ultra-beautiful, but this could be a bit longer.Hammeragricole! Very complex and fine, easy to drink. Strong parallels to the 9 year old. No idea why this is still available. The 2004 Vintage scores with dried fruit, the 2005 more with the freshness of citrus. Both ultra-good.

Grasig, weich, Neisson-typisch durch die 51%. Hintenraus aber dennoch ein komplexes Meisterwerk. Ein großer klassischer Agricole.

Only one word to describe this neisson: Outstanding! Fruit, spice, citrus and wood all perfectly blended! Throughout the tasting it has superb balance! You can't ask for anything better!
Review by Dr.Django
For me, Neisson rums are the most elegant of their kind. This Agricole is majestic and noble. When I taste it, I feel like I'm wearing a wig and a Renaissance suit =D The nose is outstanding! The palate is also world class! Second tasting +2 points (Agricole rocks!)

Surely one of my favorite Neissons, it has everything I love about this distillery. And surprisingly, it's still available at market price...

Excellent Neisson with a dry nose and a beautifully balanced mouth with round notes.

9,2:On the nose, sugarcane juice, slightly flowery, citrus and dried fruits, roasted wood notes, smoky, with leather caramel, spices with cinnamon, nutmeg, dairy, creamy, yet complex, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, confectionery with crunchy bread, nutty pastry and biscuitsarise vegetal molasses with pickles, grass, peaches, apricots and banana from fruits, cumin and vanilla from spices, very round. 9,1:On the palate, the attack is delicious with sugarcane juice, grassy and flowery, a bit mineral, later fresh with tea, fruits like citrus, yellow and dried, sweet roasted wood notes with leather, chocolate, caramelized pastry, spicy with vanilla, clove and pepper, a very complex, yet balanced rhum. 8,9:The finish is long, dry, complex with similar notes as on the palate, this time with metallic patina. Edit:4.1.2026

Very pretty agricole, on the nose spices, rather lively, candied orange, a mixture of varnish and glue, sugar cane has evolved into a brown sugar caramel, dried fruit cake. The palate follows the same logic: complex, balanced and accessible. I'd even go so far as to say it's easy to drink. Pancakes topped with bourbon vanilla pastry chocolate, cane that remains surprisingly fresh, cake spices, a lovely noble woodiness like Neisson's secret. A warm, enveloping finish with a lovely bitterness. Very dark chocolate, walnut kernels, those same spices, perhaps even a steaming cappuccino base. Excellent - 90/100

RX787 vs. RX6418. Phew, a very close contest between two classics! RX787 is ahead on the nose, it seems more present and older, gnarlier. On the palate, after a long time, the RX6418 pushes itself further and further to the fore. It is sweet and elegant, somehow supple. The RX787, on the other hand, has more wood and power and is somewhat rougher than the RX6418. But it's mercilessly well made! Nevertheless, I find the RX6418 a tick better, more pleasing. Maybe Luca would have preferred to choose the one for Velier's 70th birthday? 😉

Agricoles and I have a difficult relationship and I'm more at home with molasses rums. But then there are pieces like this one ... Enchanting nose to fall in love with: Old bourbon with candied fruit, nuts, juicy carrot cake with honey and a slightly herbal note. Dry on the palate and without many of the characteristics that often bother me about agricoles. But the nose does it for me here.
Review by TheRhumhoe
A Neisson that rhymes with elegance. The nose is greedy on sugar cane, caramel and cookie, fine on a melted woodiness that tends towards tobacco and chocolate, subtle on dried and exotic fruits, slightly fresh on vegetables, but above all abundant on spices and nuts. A complete and complex profile. The profile on the palate is intense, dry and complex. More vegetal and agricultural than on the nose, the scents of grass and sugarcane are slightly bitter. The woodiness is present, but it's the spices that offer the most on the palate: cinnamon, chili pepper, black pepper, ginger, aniseed and vanilla bring vivacity and complexity to this very versatile profile. Citrus fruits add a touch of freshness in the background. Alcohol is well integrated. The finish is long and dry, but round. Spices, nuts, chocolate and coffee bring a sweetness that counterbalances the agricultural, green, bitter and vegetal side for a subtle, delicate balance. A Neisson with a greener, drier profile than the 2007 vintage, but a very high level of versatility, intensity and depth.

My first great Neisson. This first nose contact is remarkable! It smells of age, but with elegance! The palate, consistent with the nose, is, in my opinion, a little below par, perhaps due to a pepperiness out of step with the sweetness of the nose. Overall, it's the barrel aromas that dominate, with a very heavy vanilla note that's perhaps a little too present. I understand the legend better, but not yet the price ;p

Tasted together with the 'normal' Neisson 2005 (12 years, 49.7%). The slightly higher ABV of the Velier is definitely noticeable on the nose, it makes the Velier a bit more 'grippy'. In the normal 2005, the (green) fruit notes are a bit more present, it also seems a bit rounder. On the palate, both come with extreme complexity and an endless finish! Agricole of the very top drawer!

Neisson in Topform.
Review by Benoit Mahe
On the nose we find dried fruits, nuts, vanilla, leather, chocolate and honey. The rum coats the palate well, it is creamy, complex and warm. The dried fruits and the chocolate make this palate very greedy. The finish is long, still on the greediness with caramel and cocoa. A very good rum, greedy and complex.

wonderful Agricole... for me once again a substance that gives me pleasure all evening...there is no need for anything else ....

Nearly 600 notes in the database but this is actually only my second Neisson tasting. I'm writing this partly because I noticed in the last tasting that I scored below average. This is also the case here - at least in the first tasting. The rum says right from the start: I am an agricole rum. It is clear at all times that this is such a rum. It is very straightforward overall, but has depth. It is complex, slightly grassy but with a good coating of sweetness. The ageing is wonderfully present but very well integrated. Complexity overall, as well as the finish, are ok, but didn't knock me off my feet. I let it breathe for just over an hour. I find it very good but not outstanding.

Belle longueur et quelle complexité.. Ils se loupent rarement Neisson !!

Perfectly balanced and integrated. The wood is noticeable but in a good way. Agricole notes likes grass and licorice nicely felt but not overpowering, more on the nutty side by with noticeable sweetness. Very tasty. Thanks JakobM for the sample.

Incredibly good Rhum. I first drank it at Neisson in the company store in the distillery in Martinique. Second time today in the RFC 2024 advent calendar. Incredible fullness of spice, nuts and vanilla. When I gave my wife a sniff, she smelled it like eggnog - I think it was the vanilla that made it smell so good. I'm absolutely blown away 😍

Last Neisson for tonight. On the nose: Bourbon barrel influence is quite obvious. Woody, vanilla, spices like cinnamon, nutmeg and leather. Roasted. Taste: Vanilla and woody notes. Spicy notes like leather and nutmeg are on the background, but then you get more vegetal notes and palate changes towards more sweeter sugarcane notes. Warm. The abv is integrated perfectly. Complex and balanced. Finish: Woody, leather, tobacco and roasted notes. Sugarcane. Dry. Nice complexity even in the finish. Wow, Agricole rum integrated perfectly with Bourbon barrel.

Very good Martinique, with almost the highest level, may even better than Le Rhum XO Full Proof series. complex enough for Agricole.

Review by Rhum Mirror 🇧🇪
Honeyed nose: woody/spicy/vanilla/dried fruit. The nose is well-balanced and fresh. On the palate, the attack is smooth and velvety. Spices (cinnamon), wood, chocolate and citrus fruits are on the menu. Long on the palate: smoke/tobacco Conclusions: this is a fine product, clearly in the upper echelons of old agricultural wines. It is a worthy representative of Martinique's terroir, with its masterful balance. The minty freshness makes for an explosive finish. Probably the best Neisson I've tasted to date.

a bit oak dominated compared to the 15yo batch 2 which retains more subtlety. still super delicious!
Review by Schnubbii

Grazie Simon

Diamond Advent Calendar RFC 2024 After a quarter of a year I'm revisiting this piece again, this time at my private unicorn night. Complex nose full of fruit, wood. Taste toned down typical of aged stout rums- very pleasant.

Review by BnBrt
Review by Rum man
This rum starts of with a wonderful smell: a lot of wood and vanilla accompanied by spices and some vegetal notes that at times go into herbal notes like basil. Quite the complex nose. That same potpourri of balanced flavour is something you also find in the taste; sweet, fresh and even a minimal sour note balance it out very nicely. There is vanilla, wood, an almond or two and dried fruits. Really lovely. It scores 90 points but there is room to score even higher on the second tasting.

Sublime ❤️
Review by Wagnerlicious

Neisson ❤️

3rd tasting of this Neisson 2005. I find notes of vanilla, almond and nuts. The alcohol is perfectly integrated. You just let yourself be carried away. It's top-notch patisserie, and leaves you wanting more.

I guess Neisson is just not my jam. In all their rums I find this sharp acidity that I don't love in a rum. Good overall I am glad I tried it

On the nose, a warm pot of butter full of hazelnuts, walnuts, and macadamia. Along with wood glue, Persian rose water, and an earthiness of roots, combined with dried apricots. On the palate, the sweetness explodes, but not overwhelming—juicy like fruit. The sweetness is flanked and balanced by dark chocolate, roots, and a deep nuttiness. You can still taste the finish after hours. Blind, you might think you have an old high-end bourbon like Pappy or Willet in the glass, but here it’s complemented by the fruit. Overall, J. Bally is the Agricole king for me, but this bottle would definitely be a candidate for a desert island. And the rum is just f**king 11 years old! Together with the La Bonne Intention 1998, definitely one of the best youngsters in the +-10 year range.
