Clarendon Flensburg Rum Company JMM 1999
"Passionsfrucht trifft auf Salmiakpastillen," as one taster put it — this 21-year Clarendon (JMM mark) leans fruity-floral rather than heavy Jamaican funk. Expect papaya, orange, vanilla and roasted oak, with a lick of glue and salty licorice. Continental aging makes it round and layered. Not everyone's convinced, though: a few find the alcohol poorly tucked and the fruit too subtle for cask strength.

Aggregated from 55 community reviews.
Fruity, floral old Clarendon that splits opinion Most find it fruity, spicy and well-aged, a filigree Clarendon that grows on you. But it genuinely divides: some feel the 56% intrudes and the esters read faint for the style.

Rum Friendly Club Advent Calendar, day 11. A woody, fruity nose. Yellow fruit (pear) and dried fruit, with wood that is marked and heavy but not overpowering. A hint of bourbon. The palate is soft at first, then fruit and wood aromas take over. The alcohol is very well integrated, and plenty of spice and dried fruit complete the picture. The finish is well-balanced, tasty and rather long, with the barrel taking on greater importance and the fruit remaining present right to the end. A very fine rum, complex and fruity.

After all the good reviews, I had hoped for a positive surprise when I tasted it again. Unfortunately, this is not the case. For me, the alcohol is not well integrated and the aromas of light fruits are too subtle in this rum. I prefer the brief flare-up of pastry and spice flavors on the palate. The finish is rather sharp and short. The rum seems to have its connoisseurs, the long availability and the comparatively good price are clear to me.

Classified in the blind tasting in the direction of Fiji.

The nose surprises me at first both positive and negative. Positive is definitely the complexity of fruit, tropical fruit and citrus of all kinds. Also, glue, sulfur, acidity, pepper, nutmeg, anise and, not very surprisingly, a lot of oak. Negative is unfortunately the intensity, I would have expected more. On the palate, however, then very set, most of the flavors are also found in the mouth, but much more intense. Overall, a definitely underrated and incredibly tasty rum. This set and round fruitiness with the equally set spice is just wonderful

This one is as good as it's older brothers and definitely one you should try if you get the chance. The nose is fruity with vanilla and wood, in the back there is a bit of solvents maybe even polish. The palate is nice and complex again fruity with spices where vanilla is the dominent spice. A little sweet with with roasted oak. The finish is long and has anise and tropical fruits and a nice barrel topping.

Even at the second tasting, the alcohol is too poorly integrated and displaces with its strength - at least for my taste - on the palate these really pleasant floral notes in the nose. A bit of a shame, would have liked to give him more points, but do not want to lie to myself in the pocket. Still recommended to buy, acceptable PLV for a solid rum of currently (early February 2022) around 140 EUR, which is still available.Update 2022/02/12: I just like this light nose that reminds a bit of pickles at the end (pleasant!). And today - in direct comparison with the RA EMB 1995 - I find the alcohol level on the palate just right. Conclusion: smooth 3 points more, 85!😊

Update 3 years later: I would blindly perceive it more as a continental matured Fiji or even uitvluigt. Fruity notes and esters zero but herbs, rubber and pencil ... 3rd try with it: sorry but I stick to it, for the life of me I don't understand all the so good reviews, for me this is a prime example of contintental aging which backfired. for me absolutely not cool and more like licorice, nutmeg & wood water with sour cream... hardly any flavors, incomplex & unspectacular & especially for 150€, a bit woody, minimally sweet, hardly any fruit, hardly any esters... disappointing and absolutely not my cup of tea. Incidentally, 2 colleagues have a similar opinion and were there...

A fine nose. Fruity, almost delicately floral, with a mixture of passion fruit, orange and honey. A very tiny bit of vinegar. This makes it come across as slightly buttery. Vanilla at the back and a bit woody, oak.Wow, nicely layered on the palate! At the beginning very spicy-strong and woody-bitter. Then comes something salty licoricey and then something that reminds me of umami, followed by a sour fruitiness, maybe passion fruit again. In the finish anise and this umami something.I like very much!

Mild but weak in taste

The smell is so pleasant and nice. I was surprised by the colour, I would expect more darker tones. Taste is complex, fruity and full, you wouldn’t guess 56%. Rum is missing intensity. Aftertaste is woody, spicy and with hints of fruits. Very interesting rum which I would recommend to everyone.

Extremely good continental aged Monymusk. Fruity, spicy, light honey sweetness and very nice barrel aromas.
