Blind, almost nobody pegged this as Appleton — tasters kept guessing Guyana or Caroni. It's the dirtiest, funkiest of the Hearts run: furniture polish, glue and solvent up front, then dark chocolate, tobacco, leather, bitter orange and roasted coffee. Fruit shows on the nose but the palate leans woody, dry and tannic. Give it plenty of air and a few drops of water.

Direktvergleich 94, 95 und 99: In der Nase eher zurückhaltend, die Frucht muss man suchen am ehesten Zitrus (Scheuermilch) ansonsten eher medizinisch. Am Gaumen dann eher mineralisch und metallisch irgendwie unrund. Alkohol eher widerspenstig und im Abgang Scharf. Aus meiner Sicht der schlechteste der drei.

Solvent, polish, glue and dried fruit on the nose. Animalistic. Very complex and very dirty and funky by Appleton standards. I could smell it forever. Lots of wood and liquorice on the palate, very complex. A very long, very nice finish. Great rum, I like it better than the 1999. Edit: In the glass again for a long time. It takes a long time to open up. Definitely the dirtiest and funkiest of the Hearts series and therefore a bit out of line. If EMB 1995/97 is one of your favorites, you've come to the right place.

I have finally found the perfect chocolate to reset and enhance my palate when tasting. I can recommend the 70% chocolate from Peru made from the Chuncho Bean (Trinidad). This bottle is also a really nice one and there is no doubt that it's an Appleton Estate in the nose nor the palate. A great rum probably already sold out. It was gone here in Denmark the day it was released and the bottle prices have already skyrocketed.

RumX Advent calendar 12.12.21: This drop has a sensational nose. You could smell it endlessly. In the mouth, unfortunately, it didn't quite meet my taste. Compared to the series, this was the one I liked the least. Retasting: The mouth falls short compared to the great nose. Alcohol is too present for me, something furry/tannic.

Clearly better than the 99. Nice notes of dark chocolate, toffee, lime, grapefruit marmalade, coffee, not too much wood and some mint and glue. Kind of reminds me of Jaffa cakes on steroids. Only rather with lime/grapefruit instead of orange. Only here again a bit alcoholic and astringent, otherwise the rating would be higher!

I like it very much. I particularly like the slightly dirty note behind the pleasant menthol, cedarwood and tobacco mix. Dried apricot and a few yellow and green fruits.

Ein Traum einmal die ganze Appleton Hearts Reihe durch zu probieren können. Mein Fazit wäre, dass es sich hier um eine wirklich hochwertige Reihe handelt. Alles in allem sind es alle Klasse Abfüllungen. Einen wahren Sieger hier zu bestimmen fällt mir persönlich schwer. Einzig der 84er fällt ein wenig ab. Sowie der 02er können nicht ganz so mithalten, wobei das jammern auf hohem Niveau ist. Wenn ich mich jedoch auf einen festlegen müsste, wäre es vermutlich der 03er, weil es der erste war, den ich aus der Serie probiert habe.

Appleton Hearts Crosstasting mit den Jahrgängen 2002, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1999 (RX15475, RX15474, TBD) 2002: Fruchtig und würzig mit einem Hauch Menthol. Am Gaumen viel Holz und Gewürze, leicht adstringend und bitter, Fruchtnoten ganz dezent. 1993: Deutlich intensiver mit mehr Gewürze und mehr vom Fass, dazu auch dreckige Noten, die mich an TDL oder Chairmans erinnern. Am Gaumen extrem trocken und bitter mit ordentlichen Fasseinschlag, leicht verkohlt. Mir fehlt hier etwas das Fruchtige. Abgang ist sehr lang! 1994: Ähnlich 1993, jedoch mehr Frucht und eine deutliche Minznote. Auch am Gaumen deutliche Parallelen, jedoch nicht ganz so bitter und dreckig und Fruchnoten sind noch dezent vorhanden. 1999: Viel Holz und Gewürze, mit Trockenfrüchten und trop. Früchten im Hintergrund. Am Gaumen jede Menge Gewürze und Holz, dafür kaum Fruchtnoten, aber auch keine verkohlten/bitteren Noten. 1995: Auch hier wieder dreckige Aromen mit Teer, Leder und Lack. Ähnlich wie 1993/1994. Die holzigen, bitteren Aromen dominieren auch hier am Gaumen. Für mich: 1994 ->8.8 2002 + 1999 ->8.7 1993 + 1995 ->8.6

Richtig intensiver tropischer Vertreter aus Jamaica! Schwer, ganz viel Fass, dennoch fruchtig und der Funk kommt auch durch! Zwischendurch, insbesondere beim Geruch könnte man auf Demerara tippen - großes Ding!

Im Vergleich zum 99er ne Spur erwachsener. Bei dem Finish braucht es keine Zigarre mehr. Die ist schon integriert. Nur blöd das ich nicht rauche. 😅 Es weiß aber trotzdem sehr gut zu gefallen, eben deutlich dreckigeres Profil👍 Ein bisschen vermisse ich nur etwas deutlichere Fruchtnoten im Abgang. Gibt man ihm genug Zeit wird er immer besser, von daher ein Extrapunkt 😋👌

im direkten Vergleich den 94er, 95er und 99er. Nase: der 94er im Hintergrund mit leichter Minze/Mentholnote, der 99er etwas kräutriger und im Hintergrund Apfelessig (vielleicht auch Balsamico) und Zimtstange. Der 95er mit Orangenschale und Möbelpolitur, die ich auch oft bei 96er Caronis in der Nase habe. Am Gaumen wiederum ist der 95er der ‚Außenseiter’ mit sehr ausgeprägten, verkohlten Noten; der 94er gefällt mir hier am besten. das

Had a sample and needed to pour it next to the 1994. It needs a lot of time to really open up, for a long time the alcohol was overpowering together with menthol . But then the dry and fruity notes start to develop. I enjoyed every little drop until the very end of the long woody bitter-chocolate finish. It was more funky compared to the 1994, but definitely not as funky as a lot of other Jamaicans.

Rum Friendly Club, calendrier de l’avant, jour 20. Des fruits tropicaux et du vieux bois verni, un nez assez simple et pourtant diablement réussi. Le menthol est très présent dès la première bouche et donne une superbe fraîcheur à ce rhum de 25 ans. La complexité vient ensuite, chocolat, bois de cèdre, tabac, fruits secs et tropicaux. La finale est longue et tous les arômes restent présents et s’équilibrent magnifiquement. Superbe finale !

Pleasant nose with a burnt chocolate smell, some fruitiness is there too. On palate however it is quite harsh in terms of alcohol, also goes a bit towards fennel vegetable notes, with some small taste of grapefruit. I compared it directly against 1994 one, and overall the latter one was a more balanced and more enjoyable.

It's been a while I have not tasted an Appleton from Heart Collection. Quite similar to the 1994 vintage. Feels a bit better balanced on the palate with less wood and more round notes. Main drawback is the alcohol integration which is rather poor on the nose. Besides this, very good rum !

RumX-Adventskalender, 12.12., blind, Erster Eindruck: fruchtig-würzig-süße-Guyana-Nase und trocken-holzig-kräftiger-KFM-Gaumen. Total falsch, wie schon beim 94er. In der Nase dem 94er ähnlich, doch dunkler und holziger, würziger, bitterer. Trotzdem sehr fruchtig mit einer feinen Süße. Alte Blutorange mit dunkler, saurer Johannisbeere, getrockneter Aprikose, Pflaume, liebliche Papaya und Passionsfrucht. Etwas Essig. Sehr karamellig mit dunklem Honig. Trockenes Holz und Vanille. Etwas seifig. Lecker! Am Gaumen kräftig, holzig, würzig, btter-salzig. Etwas Seifiges mit leichter Melisse kommt durch. Etwas Vanille mit Kardamom, Pfeffer und Muskat. Deutlich röstig Richtung Mokka. Hinten schwarze Johannisbeere. Die Komplexität begeistert, aber hat er einen eigenen Charakter? Ein krasser Rum!!

Opět dalši kousek z řady aplleton hearts. V porovnání se starší bráchou 1994 je za mě ovocnější, a hřejivější. Stále spousta lešťenky, která je pro appleton řekl bych typická, nebo alespoň častá, a jodně dřeve, které je zatím ve všech starších srdcích.

RumX-Adventskalender, 12.12.2021, blind. Wow, was eine fruchtige Nase! Sehr komplex, ein schöner Fruchtkorb. Eine Mischung aus dunklen und tropischen Früchten. Etwas geschwefelt (Trockenfrüchte), Waldhonig, Thymian und Süßholz. Am Gaumen extrem holzig! Holy Shit, das ist krass, ganz anders als in der Nase. Nahezu keine Frucht, aber Holz, Holz, Holz! Tannine, Pfeffer, ein bisschen röstig. Dazu eine Spur Muskat, Mokka und Leder, nach einiger Zeit auch Minze. Aufgrund der dunklen Früchte und würzigen Kräuter habe ich hier auf Guyana getippt. Aufgrund der Diskrepanz zwischen Nase und Gaumen sowie der enormen Holzigkeit dort sogar auf KFM festgelegt. Erneut wurde ich getäuscht, erneut ein Appleton Hearts. Spannend und klasse, aber mir fehlt der eindeutige Destillerie-Charakter!

Franconian Rum Tasting Gang & Jakob, 2023-07-27 Teil 1: Diesmal alle Appleton Hearts am Start (1984, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1999, 2002 und 2003). Für mich bleibt der 1994er immer noch der Beste der Reihe, dicht gefolgt vom 1993 und 1998. Überraschend lecker war auch der 2002. An der Nase spielt der 1984 ganz vorne mit, fällt aber am Gaumen wegen des zu starken Holzeinflusses ab.

Tag 12, 3. Advent, RumX Adventskalender: Und wieder TDL 2001 oder 2002 als erster Gedanke, nur bisschen fruchtiger in der Nase. Am Gaumen sehr holzig und trocken mit Minze und Schwarztee beim Abgang. Alkohol sehr gut eingebunden. Und wieder lag ich daneben... Erneut ein Jamaikaner, den ich nicht typisch dort zuordnen würde.

Recht trocken, holzig und adstringierend. Nichtsdestotrotz sehr lecker mit Aromen von Kaffee und Mokka im Abgang, dazu recht harzig mit ordentlich Tanninen. Frucht eher subtil. Ein schönes Teil, andere Appleton Hearts Abfüllungen liegen für mich allerdings vorne.

Au nez on sent bien les >60% bois, caramel, Fruits tropicaux En bouche, c'est très puissant, le bois le caramel et les épices dominent. Le rapport qualité/prix n'est pas au rdv malheureusement, c'est bon mais pas dingue.

Au nez, c’est plutôt lourd. On retrouve de la colle liquide et des solvants … à faible teneur ! On ne s’emballe pas, on est quand même chez Appleton. Ensuite, de l’orange amère et du chocolat noir. Mais surtout un profil boisé (il y a quand même 25 ans de fûts ce rhum). En bouche, on est loin d’imaginer d’être sur un rhum à 63%, c’est très bien intégré et crémeux en bouche. On retrouve de l’anis, de l’orangette et des touches médicinales. C’est sacrément complexe et intense en bouche. Je trouve même un style Guyana là-dedans, proche d’un PM. La finale est très respectable sur des tannins amères. J’avoue que j’avais entendu et lu pas mal de retours négatifs sur cette sélection. Mais pour le coup, je trouve cela plutôt bien réussi. OK, si on cherche à retrouver du funk et de l’explosion jamaïquaine, on en est loin. Mais si on recherche de l’intensité aromatique et de la complexité, on est à la bonne porte. Cela nous a permis de voir une facette plus brute de cette distillerie Jamaïcaine traditionnellement bien plus consensuelle. A l’aveugle, personne n’a retrouvé la distillerie jamaïcaine. Il faut dire que les vieux Appleton BDF sont rares et du coup, on ne connait pas bien leurs profils. Mais cela a été une surprise plutôt positive lors du dévoilement. Merci à tous pour votre participation et vos interventions afin que cette soirée soit ce qu’elle a été : drôle ! En effet, pas évident de se prononcer à l’aveugle et parfois l’égo en prends un coup ! Et un énorme merci à Jordan qui nous a fait le plaisir de partager un vieux Genièvre en bonus pour lancer les festivités qui en aura surpris plus d’un (il est possible de retrouver les notes de dégustation faites par Jordan sur ce sujet sur cette page) ! Je vous donne RDV, dores et déjà, au mardi 07/03/2023 pour une lineup d’une destination pas très souvent mise à l’honneur : Haïti !

בקבוק מצאתי את ה95 פחות מורכב ועוצמתי מה94. איזה יופי של דברים. עדין מדובר ברום שהוא יצירת אומנות והשוני בין הבקבוקים רק משפר את החוויה. הרום הזה עצי יותר. פחות אסטרי וטרופי. יש מרירות קלה. מלח. שוקולד. גם בקבוק מעולה אבל תא כמו ב94.

It’s almost identical to the 2002 bottling in that the coffee REALLY pops but there are noticeable differences in this one that separates it entirely from this one Nose - different nose from 2002. There’s a spiciness to the nose, combined with the ABV, that can bite if smelled too much or too close. There are notes of tobacco, oak, alcoholic vapours, slight hint of solvents, some dark chocolate, oak barrel and a floral perfume note that also contributes to the nasal sting Palate - STRONG coffee notes. This one is a fully roasted espresso compared to the americano coffee notes from the 2002. There’s a variety of spices like ginger, black pepper but there is also some nuttiness like walnuts and pecans that offer a sweetness that isn’t dominant. If there are fruit notes then the only I can find is a generic dried fruit note you get from Sherry casks but without the Sherry flavour. Like the 2002 bottling, sipping neat can make it run too hot in the palate so again 3-4 drops of water helps calm things down a little and can REALLY help you appreciate that beautiful and complex finish that lingers a while! Those drops of water helps your palate distinguish all the previously mentioned notes dance on your tongue like a symphony! Utterly delightful - reminds me of the Velier Foursquare Patrimonio bottling in the sense that when you drink a Velier version of a rum, you’re almost tasting an old school, no nonsense, traditional rum that “they used to make, back in the good old days” Signor Gargano certainly knows his stuff - I’ve YET to try anything of Velier that hasn’t absolutely blown me away!

Le nez de ce 95 comparé au 94 est beaucoup plus long à s’ouvrir, au bout de quelques minutes le solvant laisse enfin place a une belle matière grasse bien boisée, écorces d’orange, banane, cacao … beaucoup de gourmandise au programme ! Le profil pâtissier me fait beaucoup penser a un TDL des années 2000. En bouche, on sent bien les 63° mais notre palais se laisse facilement séduire, très vite le boisé et le zeste d’orange prennent le dessus, beaucoup moins gras en bouche on retrouve une pointe de fraîcheur réglisse qui vient s’ajouter. La longueur en bouche reste moyenne mais un poil plus prononcé que le 94, on garde un côté agréablement frais qui perdure.

I like this Appleton. I don’t love it and coming in at $300+ USD this carries an inane price where the liquid does not match the sticker price. What began as my digital tasting diary is now the world's most comprehensive platform for rum fans, today carried by a small team with Jakob, Lukas and Katharina, with Robert supporting us as a freelancer. We combine the collective intelligence of our community with an integrated marketplace, so you can choose with confidence, without paperwork, detours, or expert jargon.
