Uitvlugt RA Guyana Rum PM 1989
Black tea, leather and old soft wood, with pencil shavings, herbs (eukalyptus keeps coming up) and a quiet caramel sweetness underneath. This is a mature, rounded Port Mourant from 1989 — everything's polished smooth, the alcohol barely shows at 50%. Give it 30+ minutes to open. The common note: harmony over fireworks, so don't expect bright fresh fruit.

How does Uitvlugt RA Guyana Rum PM 1989 taste?
Aggregated from 87 community reviews.
Mature, herbal PM that trades power for balance A calm, balanced continental PM most tasters rate highly — tea, tobacco, herbs, well-hidden alcohol. The recurring gripe: at 50% it reads a touch thin and tame, missing the deeper punch.
Fans of aged continental Port Mourant and Demerara profiles

Excellent rum! All elements are in perfect balance, none overpowering the other. On the nose the caramel throws off thinking you will find a sweet flavor, instead the rum comes out slightly bitter and dry. Later in the mouth, toasty, woody, spicy and grape notes are noticeable. The caramel gone, perhaps cocoa or chocolate. The finish is medium long with the persistence of the grape and after that more tobacco, but still all very soft.A rum that given the distillery and aging I would have expected something more!

Very nice Uitvlugt with ripe, deep aromas. Dark fruit, tobacco and a fine spiciness on the nose, with an elegant woody note. Complex on the palate with chocolate, dried fruit and a pleasant herbaceousness that adds depth to the profile. The finish is long, warm and harmonious. For me, a really good representative of the 1989 vintage.

Some notes of tobacco, herbal, earthy, sugar, dried fruits, leather with some overwhelming lovely smell of wood (oak) in the nose. On the palate it’s very balanced and bitte with some classic guyana notes (black tea, wood, tobacco, leather…) The finish is medium long with notes of caramel, tobacco, roasted, leather and oak for sure. Very good balanced guyana rum! Very pleasant to drink and alcohol is integrated very well.

First of all, this one needs time! Woody, herbal (eucalyptus!) and complex. On the nose, floral-sweet notes reminiscent of violets. A little pencil and herbal candy on the palate. Lingers in the mouth for a long time.Despite cask strength only 50% and thus very quaffable, could almost pass for an easy sipper. Nevertheless, very complex and multilayered, a great Demerara! If you give this rum the time it needs, an incredible bomb!

Port Mourant is not my favourite rum from Demerara and this one is not bad at all. I still rather prefer darker PM profiles.

If you like Uitvlugt, you'll like this rum. Everything is there, herbs, peat, cocoa, pencil, tea and tobacco, also something floral and nonetheless also tropical fruits. Syrupy despite the low ABV. Dense bouquet. A very tasty rum.

Well, that's rather something. Top shelf once again at RA Guyanas. Great rum that has everything you could wish for.

The last time tried 2 years ago, now in nice round again. Nose: initially closed, spicy-woody, muted fruity with grape, sour cherry, tr. currant and vlt. some papaya. Some smokiness, damp chewing tobacco and pencil lead. Caramel acidity comes in. Becomes increasingly earthy, resinous, rooty. Herbaceousness comes with thyme but also something mild like cashew or rice flour. Sufficiently complex nose. 8.7 Palate: a bit flat at first but then more depth and out the back thoughtfully woody and old. Old newsprint and oily pencil lead. Got some plum but also chestnut, cashew and sesame. 8.9 Tobacco on the finish...

A very good representative of the continental PMs, albeit not a high-flyer of the vintage. Wood, herbs, tea, hints of rubber - the 1989 Uitvlugts/PMs retain a recognizable profile, but for me, even in top form, they cannot match the spearhead of the Demerara aroma world.

Complex and drinkable at the same time. Very nice 1989!

Great PM! A little more herbaceous than the SS!
Review by Felix Reiber
After an appropriate waiting time in the glass (approx. 30-50 min.), you notice the full aromatic splendor and complexity on the nose. From woody spice to herbs, fruit and caramel, everything is there and also very balanced. On the palate, caramel, herbs, tannins and an interesting spiciness reminiscent of Caroni. Fruit, herbs and tea notes resonate and create a first-class balance of the complex and varied aromas. The finish is long, with a pleasant woodiness that alternates with spices and herbs. A subtle bitterness is perceptible and supports the tones of black tea and leather. A great vintage with successful, well-developed maturation. You don't drink something like this every day.

Delicious. Really one of the better PMs from the 90s onwards. On the nose a great mix of fruit (grape and dried fruit), wood, herbs, vanilla and tobacco with great sweetness. On the palate with more wood in the mix as well as some licorice, tea, plum and a pleasant bitterness. A roasty, bitter finish with strong espresso, smoke, leather and tea.

9,2:On the nose, the first impression we get is a very complex rum with woody and vegetal notes like notes from roasted wood as burnt sugar, leather, caramel, smoky and roasted nuts, especially hazelnut.A molasses brings vegetal notes like tobacco, herbs and earthy flowery touch. There are dried fruits like raisins, apricots, fresh grapes, citrus. On aeration, some metallic notes arise, toffee, spices with vanilla make their mark, tropical fruits like coconut and banana and from vegetal notes, hay. Very round and balanced. 8,7:On the palate, the attack is creamy with roasted, spicy wood notes like caramel, cocoa, vanilla, pepper, burnt sugar and nuts, later with resin, as the molasses is vegetal, earthy with tobacco, black tea, dark licorice. The fruits are dried and tropical with apricots, raisins, banana. Very quickly tannins arise, but not so pleasant, as they disbalance our pleasant tasting. With resting, everything comes in right creamy order, balance, as we notice lemon, red fruits and peaches from fruits and herbal, flowery notes, red bell peppers and hay. 8,7:The finish is long spicy, dry and roasted wood, tannins, the resin is a bit bitter. We notice some yoghurt note, as we could talk of earthy and smoky touch. The fruits from the palate are repeated..

Elegant nose dominated by herbs and spices. Very clear PM profile.Darker and woody notes dominat on the palate without being overwhelming (or „overaged“). Elegant and complex.

This is one of the best rums RA has ever bottled and I think it's mega that you can get it at Rumauctioneer partly below EK. 89 and 90 are the only two vintages that still have the oldschool charm at Guyana. I love this stuff

Wonderful expression selected by Rum Artesanal. The nose is really light, with floral and burnt sugar notes, along with some dark fruits (grapes and cherries) and leather. The palate, for me, is waaaay more complex, adding oranges, licorice roots and this refreshing black tea flavor.

Still a nice Port Mourant and a superb 1989. Very full tobacco and leather notes, some herbs but not über herbal. Perfect alcohol integration this was taken out of a cask at its peak. A very nice rum in sum
