Hampden Great House (Distillery Edition 2020)
Most tasters call this the best of the Great House series, and a lot of them mean it. Expect classic Hampden funk dialed to "balanced" rather than extreme: overripe banana, pineapple, marzipan and solvent, with vanilla and caramel from the wood. The 59% is remarkably well integrated. A vocal minority finds it a touch too herb-bitter or simply "not that exciting" — fair, but they're outnumbered.

Yet another fantastic Hampden release—complex, balanced, with remarkably well integrated ethanol for 59%. It’s rich & creamy, packed with juicy fruits, caramel, a subtle but welcome salinity, and plastic-y esters. Mellow oak and spices show up on the finish rounding out the whole experience.

The best Great house for me.fruity, esters, woody and empyreumatic 🤤

Finally opened my bottle! Very lovely round good balanced rum from Hampden. Fruity ester from start to the end with some nice complexity. Alcohol could be intergrated better. Would recommend it for some funky Mai Tai’s. Nose: Funky😜, Intense, ester, solvents, buttery, trop. fruits, Pineapple, banana, overripe fruits, some citrus, some sweet marzipan Mouth: Funky, dry, round, delicious, balanced, concentrated, Intense, Ester, spicy, oak(woody), roasted, trop. fruits, pineapple, banana, caramelized Finish: medium-long, funky, warm, ester, oak, anise, vanilla, trop. fruits, banana, pineapple, citrus

Hampden of great quality! A super greedy nose, fruity with just what is necessary of empyreumatic a perfect balance between greediness and seriousness with a beautiful power. The mouth and in the same profile as the nose with always this balance and this balance between power, greediness, funky empyreumatic.A long finish that fades on tropical fruits, spices always this vanilla brioche ultra greedy and this small side smoked, rubber ... A very great success a rum super well executed, I like!

80% OWH 201320% <>H 2017In direct comparison with '19, '21 and '22: fruitiest on the nose, more pineapple, darkest along with the '22, a bit more fruity and caramelly than the others on the palate.Of course but very similar to the 2019.... Fine, restrained esters on the nose, slightly vinegar. A bit more fruity and lovely than the red. With a touch of honey. Somewhat caramellyOn the palate you can feel the light esters (guessing at the stated ratio esters of about 250, so LROK level). Starts with a slight spiciness, makes a bit of a salty bitter bow, goes into fruity sour sweet (pineapple) and ends up with anise. Seems rounder and creamier than the red. Creme Brulee even.I also like the green a tad better...

The Great House are convincing across the board, as is this 2020. The slightly higher ABV helps in direct comparison (also with subsequent releases) that a little more complexity comes through. Ester, Alhohol well integrated and nicely balanced.

Wow. Definitely in my personal top 10. Neatly balanced. Class rum.not too much and not too little percentages.
Review by DomM
Most esters and punch on the nose out of the trio. Also very intense on the palate but nicely blended and round overall. Coming back with a little side-by-side in 2025, this one is clearly the most mature blend (apart from the 2019 bottling) and tops the newer release by a notch.

Both the 2019 and the 2020 Great House are really grate 😜 Different but both really good. This one is a bit darker and sweeter. In my audio related words this 2020 bottle has more base and the 2019 more treble. - Several years since my last tasting and I agree with myself above.

Should be the benchmark for a good Jamaican. Tasty and top PLV.
Review by Lukas Jäger
Like its predecessor in 2019, a very tasty blend. Although somewhat more subtle than a large part of the bottlings from Hampden, he still brings a large part of the flavors and the characteristic bouquet of the distillery. Somewhat rounder, more mature and thus also more dignified than the first edition, it is, however, also rather an easy sipper among the Hampdens. The differences from the predecessor are surprisingly clear, yet I can hardly decide which one tastes better to me: The first edition with more exciting edges and corners or the 2020 bottling, which seems more mature and finished.

What a foot, what power but devilishly well balanced.

I find the Great House great, already at the first batch went to me so. For me, this Hampden is simply the best all-rounder and a classic "Every Day Rum" with a super PLV. It is balanced, elegant and simply delicious as hell.

It is a little different than the 2019 but not better or worse. Great rum. Easy Sipper. And for 89€ a bottle. Am glad I got a few bottles at MSRP.

A rum of very good invoice.

1:1 Sour Cream Chips in the nose and mouth, although in my case, since I like such chips, this is positive. Overall a good HD.

This rum is one of the classics to try if you're interested in this spirit. The nose is funky, exuberant, concentrated and deliciously gourmand, driven by ripe tropical fruits (banana, pineapple, mango) and citrus. Phenolic and pastry notes add the whimsy so dear to Jamaica. There's also a hint of wood, spice and vanilla. The palate is quite intense, with a rich, creamy texture that concentrates fruity notes (papaya complements) and funky notes (glue, solvents, esters, varnish). There's also marzipan, wood and spices (pepper, vanilla) and lightly roasted notes. The whole is complete and coherent. The alcohol is well integrated. The finish is drier, tannic and slightly woody. The fruit, esters, pastry and spice notes are more subtle, but enhance the background with good roundness. A pleasant, generous, full-bodied rum in pure Hampden DNA.
