Caroni Kill Devil (The Whisky Barrel) HTR 1998
People who already chase that Caroni rubber-and-tar profile are the audience here. Heavy industrial rubber and bicycle-tube notes sit next to floral thyme, dark chocolate, vanilla and tropical fruit, with an oily texture several tasters loved. A few find this batch fruitier and more balanced than the classic Caroni stamp. At 64.8% it runs hot and spicy, so let it rest in the glass.

How does Caroni Kill Devil (The Whisky Barrel) HTR 1998 taste?
Aggregated from 10 community reviews.
Heavy, rubbery Caroni with a fruity side Fans rate it a properly heavy Caroni: rubber, tar and herbs balanced by fruit, chocolate and vanilla. The catch is the cask-strength heat, and some say it's a touch atypical.

Limited to a mere 246 bottles this is a very nice one indeed. A dark profile all the way. A nose with lots of flavours especially if you let it rest. Flowery, fruity and the typical tar and rubber. I have a tad of thyme as well. The palate is fruity with oak and smoke and it is spicy, really spice in a pleasant way. The rubber and tar is there again with a bit of chocolate. The finish is long, spicy and has some honey to it.

Nose: In addition to the alcohol, a clear note of marzipan. In addition, aromas of rubber and herbs.Palate: Strong alcohol appearance, sharp, then the spice dominates. Accompaniments of, herbs, vanilla, fruits.Finish: Bitter dirty flavors remain, rubber and spice. Conclusion: More marzipan on the nose than the big brother with 65%, but on the palate almost identical with the typical characteristics. However, there are more intense or full-bodied representatives.

Another Caroni in my hands. Aroma was heavy (in a good way) with lot of rubber and floral scents (thyme). I let it rest for while to noticed some sweet scents (mostly vanilla and caramel), fruits, smoke, wood and dirt. Very nice combination. Flavor was again heavy, little bit alcoholic and spicy. I love that oil texture with sweet tones of dark chocolate and vanilla and some teopical fruits. Dominant flavors for me were rubber and again herbal tones with hint of smoke, oak and dirt. Finish is quite long, warmy, peppery with lot of rubber and herbal flavors. Great sample, love that even I can say that this reminded of Trinidad rums (heavy, rubbery almost technical). Love that combination of fruits and dark chocolate.

🔥 Kill Devil Caroni 1998 - 20 ans - 64,8 % We're staying with the 1998 vintage, but this time with 5 more years of aging... and 12.8% more in the glass! In a blind tasting, I'd never have placed it in the Caroni category: I'd have thought of it more as a TDL. A very fruity and above all floral profile, with a surprising dominance of eucalyptus. But there's also a smoky, spicy undertone. An atypical profile, but really nice. I really like it, even if it's a long way from the classic Caroni imprint.

Read full review →Of the Caroni casks that The Whisky Barrel had at one point, this is the best of them. This is a great example of what good Caroni can be, a mix of pleasant fruit flavors balanced out by those aggressive industrial notes. When they are balanced like this, it makes for a great and interesting rum that isn’t dominated by the industrialness.

Read full review →I'll be looking forward to trying the sister cask of this rum, as this is a really good example of a fruitier, more balanced Caroni rum. It's still got all the menace it's just got a bit extra fruity complexity to help balance it out a little Really top stuff.
