Trois Rivières Millésime 1980
Nearly everyone who's tried this old Trois Rivières lands in the same happy place, though a couple find it a touch too mellow to be thrilling. Distilled in 1980 from cane juice, it's a calm, layered agricole: red fruit, toasted wood, chocolate and hazelnut, vanilla and dried fig, with a soft floral lift and a finish several call very long. A quiet, mature rum rather than a loud one.

This is a great rum and the price to quality is very good in my mind. The nose is fruity with wood, nuts and vanilla with trailing caramel and a nice floral note. The palate has toasted wood and fruit trailed by vanilla, licorice and chocolate. There is also a hint of menthol in there. The chocolate and fruits become very clear in the empty glass. The finish is long and has wood, chocolate and raisin with trailing vanilla.

An extraordinary Trois Rivières with a very complete and successful profile. On the nose, red fruits and dried fruits, honeyed notes and sugar cane, sweet pastry notes with hazelnuts and almonds, followed by more floral, grassy and spicy aromas. But it's the woody notes that stand out for their incredible finesse. This finesse is echoed on the palate with a varied, expressive yet very elegant profile featuring mocha, dark chocolate, toffee, but also sweet spices, exquisite fine woodiness and subtle fruity notes. The finish is long and delicious. An extraordinary rum, a true Martinique unicorn.

Quite balanced overall, with a bit of everything, from toasted wood and chocolate notes to fruit and light spices. It misses a more pronounced profile for me, with a more mellow feel, though makes it an enjoyable sipper. Alcohol integration quite good but not spectacular. Overall happy to have this bottle and to be able to come back to it from time to time

Sehr tiefe Farbe. Supergute Nase! Frucht, Holz, Tabak, Erde, Kirsche. Komplex!!! Gut!!! Supergut!!! Im Mund geht es ähnlich weiter. Mittellanger Abgang. Sehr guter Agricole. Komplex, süffig und anspruchsvoll.

A look back at a fine sample from the past: Trois Rivières 1980 Plantation Trois-Rivières is one of the oldest in Martinique. Its emblematic name comes from the three rivers bordering its hectares of cane fields: Oman, Bois d'Inde and Saint Pierre. As a reminder, the Trois-Rivières distillation columns were moved to the current La Mauny site in 2004, just after the closure of the former Trois-Rivières distillery in Ste-Luce. The latter produces vintage agricultural rums from 1953 to the present day. Here, we're talking about a rum distilled in 1980, aged for 10 years under the Martinique sun, and bottled at 45%. This cuvée has an attractive copper color. The nose is incredibly intense and expressive. It's driven by red fruits, with a hint of toasted dried fruit. See varnish, quite disconcerting and bewitching. Very seductive and fragrant. A particularly warm, fruity nose. Quite impressive. On the palate, the attack is smooth, with perfectly balanced integration. A lovely bouquet of candied fruit. Not to mention a suave empyreumatic profile (mocha-toasted). The interminable vanilla/coconut finish is unexpectedly greedy. This is clearly a monument of the distillery, whose nose and interminable finish will remain engraved in my memory. I can only thank Cedric for sharing this sample (and photo).

Review by Jakob
Very round profile with a wide range of aromas - red fruits harmonize with the familiar barrel and spicy notes, plus some fresh herbs and whole light, sour yoghurt notes.
Review by Carlitooo
A great rhum that becomes more and more complex in the mouth until it ends in an incredible finish. Consistently awesome from front to back!

The nose is somewhat roasted with chocolate, tobacco, forest and sugarcane. On the palate there are hazelnuts, gianduja, dried fruits (dates/ figs), a soft caramel sweetness, a hint of pepper, licorice and a woody finesse on the side that gradually increases. After resting, the roasted notes return and more floral violet notes emerge. The finish is delicate, what a delight!
