TBRC Caroni Bottled for Kirsch Whisky 1998

Cherry, menthol and fresh bicycle rubber, with dark chocolate and mocha underneath. This 1998 Caroni leans fruitier and rounder than most — several tasters call it "not so dirty," more herbal and even a touch sweet. The workshop notes are there but soft. One reviewer named it a new reference for "fruchtige caronis," while bicycle-tube hardliners might miss the heavier tar.

Rounder, fruity Caroni with cherry and menthol Loved by most as a milder, fruitier Caroni — cherry, menthol and chocolate over gentle rubber. The catch: purists chasing the dirtiest Trinidad tar will find it too polished.

This was a huge surprise, not your typical Caroni at all. Milder and rounder than you'd expect and not dirty at all. The nose is fruity and herbal with menthol, chocolate and some roasted notes. The palate is light, round and kind of sweet with cherry rubber, menthol, chocolate and a lighter herbal note than the nose. The finish is medium long and mild with cherries as well as light rubber and wood.

Na ja, was soll man sagen zu diesem Caroni? Hat halt nicht die übliche Caroni DNA, diese ist trotzdem gut erkennbar hier, dank Lösungsmitteln, Fahrradschlauch, Gummi, Politur and a little bit of Teer :) Trotzdem halt einfach CARONI :)

A little Caroni tasting. I wish I hadn't started it. Why do they all taste so good? :D Great stuff. Not so pronounced workshop notes. Rather a little fruitier, sweeter and nicely drinkable. I like it very much. Many thanks Jakob.

I find it very tasty all round. Very well integrated alcohol. Nice mint/cherry note and suitably dirty. Overall, probably not top shelf for Caroni beginners, but just right. Definitely worth a purchase!

Nose What..wait a moment! Mentholated chocolate, parsley, thyme, essential oils, Axe Deo, some glue and melted butter. This ain't no petrol can, but a hybrid of Angostura (the good ones), Damoiseau and some drops of Caroni 1996 Guyana stock. Plus the most herbal Caroni nose we've had in the glass so far. Definitely not one of the Dirty Trinidad section, which could disappoint some of the bicycle tube hardliners, but we on the other hand highly welcome it. After some time a very slight dirtiness arises, but not of rubber, more like farmy Islay peat, Bowmore style. No complaints Sir, we appreciate that bouquet. With water: Some sour cherries just popped in. Palate Delicate and creamy cherry sweetness meets new bicycle rubber. There it is! But not unpleasant. Add carob and filter coffee. Add After Eight Chocolate. Add cherries. Add amaretto and a few dashes of thyme oil. Throw a new eraser into the juice. Stirr. Ready is the heavy bodied, magic potion. It's a bit sharp though. With water: Getting perceptibly thinner. Better skip that water. Finish Medium long for a Caroni, but long enough for a continental one. The black cherries clearly set the agenda.

Caroni

Avg Rating 8.8/10 620 Rums

No closed distillery is chased harder than Caroni. The Trinidad distillery shut down around 2002 and not a drop has been made since, but its heavy, oily, almost diesel-like rum became a collector obsession, carried to the world by Velier. Every bottle now comes from a finite, shrinking stock, which is exactly why the prices keep climbing.
