Asta Morris South Pacific Rasta Morris 2009

One taster nailed it: "umami, peppery funk" with an industrial edge — that's the Fiji signature here. Distilled in 2009 and bottled at 60.5%, it swings between esters, citrus and campfire smoke, with salt, olive and pepper on the palate. Several found it closer to a smoky Scotch than a rum. Polarising by design, and light on wood to tie it together.

What do you get when blending Jamaican rum, young Guyana pot still and Isla whisky, all continental aged? Right! Let’s do 5 Fijians. SBS 2009 57% Rasta Morris 2009 60,5% Old Brothers 2011 59,1% Old Brothers 2009 63,3% The Nectar 2009 60,5% C: White wine. N: Ooh esters, Aah burnt eucalyptus, Ooh old tyres, Aah pineapples and peaches. An amazing blend between Jamaican fruitiness and phenolic fumes. Let’s see if the mouth can also deliver. M: Sweet lime, sweet piña and smoke. This is an “in your face” kind of Fijian. It sure delivers! Me: Hello bartender, do you have a Cask Strength rum from Fiji? B: Sorry we don’t. Me: Don’t bother. Blend that 10y Hampden, that 12y Versailles and that 12y Lagavulin. Thank you very much. F: Short and smoky. Buy: Yes, I want 2 bottles of this.

Du début à la fin les solvants et le fumé prennent trop de place, c'est dommage car après une très longue aération quelques notes pâtissières font quelques apparition (trop discrètement).

Tasted at Liquid Leuven ‘23, so my review remains rather concise. On the nose immediately clear why this is polarising. It’s an eclectic blend of esters, citrus and campfire smoke. Especially the smoky note is quite present. Opens reasonably sour with berrymix and lemon juice; counterbalanced with yellow banana and marzipan. Then heavily spiced with peppers, juniper and cloves, which segue into chamomile tea and dried grasses. A medicinal side takes over and drives the spirit into a wood smoke finish. The palate is similar to the nose. Aggressive, eclectic. There’s the addition of sour pineapple and a little bit of rubber, but the experience remains fruity, spicy, estery and primarily smoky. Despite all this, I still find it light and unbalanced. There’s unfortunately too little wood to tie it all together. More time in, or a more active barrel would have worked magic. The finish is medium long with notes of yellow banana, pineapple juice and marzipan, finishing again with esters and hay.

First let rest. Funky in the nose with chemical and citrus notes. The taste is salty-smoky-tart and reminds me more of a Scotch whisky. I can actually appreciate it, oddly enough. Finish is dry-woody-salty and keeps going.... Peppery-spicy accents from start to finish. Different, but certainly not bad. I like it, fine discovery.
