Cadenhead's DDL Pot Still Guyana PDW 1972

The surprise here is how little it reads like a heavy Demerara. Several tasters at a blind session guessed agricole from the nose, not a Port Mourant. What you get instead is elegant caramel, vanilla and cocoa from 29 years in oak, with a rounded, gently sweet body and light spice. One member called it "very nice demerara light." Not the most complex PDW, but harmonious and easy to love.

Slightly more complex than its 28-year-old sister bottling, very balanced, sweet vanilla and caramel notes from the oak, subtle spices and fruit...great cinema.

14.12.2025 Retasting and I still like it a lot. -------- This is a masterpiece which comes with a pretty heavy price tag. It's well worth it though, so if you find one I suggest you give it a go. Your first challenge would be to find one though. Bottled in 2002 you will probably have to get it on an auction. A wonderful Cadenhead and in my mind one of the best ones from them.

Richtig starkes, klassisches Profil.

Here too, a really great and very tasty rum, but with the range that Jakob provided us for the blind tasting, a grenade unfortunately can't quite keep up with the other grenades.

First test of the new blind tasting feature. Jakob has led me up the garden path here. I would have guessed Agricole and never suspected a PM. Especially on the nose. On the palate, the sweetness seemed a little strong to me, but I didn't doubt it - and I was completely wrong. thanks Jakob

A Port Mourant that has a completely different character to other bottlings from the 60s and 70s, which again underlines the huge difference between the colored and uncolored variants, and the obvious influence of the in-house caramel. A very elegant and round rum, which needs some time in the glass at the beginning. However, you are then rewarded with beguiling caramel, cocoa and vanilla notes. This is also quite clear and intense in the mouth, with an elegant sweetness. However, that's pretty much it, because it's definitely not the most complex. And despite all the praise, I have to say that I can't quite understand the hype among connoisseurs for all PDW bottlings. For me, it's good and tasty, but nothing more. At today's prices, I wouldn't even dream of opening such a bottle

Beautifully round, marzipan, vanilla, ester, cinnamon, very special. Atypical Guyana.

Avg Rating 7.8/10 over 250 Rums

Demerara Distillers is the company that ended up holding everything. As Guyana's only surviving rum maker, its Diamond plant runs the world's last wooden pot stills and the last wooden Coffey still alongside modern columns, draws 24 different marks from them, and blends them into El Dorado. It is also the reason most Demerara on the shelf comes from one address.
