Depaz Small Batch 2002

"Give it time in the glass," several tasters insist, and they mean it. This 2002 Depaz agricole runs peppery and spicy up front, then opens into candied fruit, honey, prune and roasted coconut, with chili and green herbs threading through. One member landed on "banana bread"; another loved the smoky-honey finish. The 64.9% is oddly well tucked in, and it stays less oaky than its 17 years suggest.

The community says
  • Well-integrated alcohol
  • Spicy tropical complexity
  • Not overly oaky

How does Depaz Small Batch 2002 taste?

Aggregated from 44 community reviews.

Complex, peppery cask-strength agricole worth patience Regarded by fans as maybe the best Depaz ever — complex, spicy, fruity and beautifully integrated for the strength. A couple of tasters just never fully warmed to it, and the finish can taper.

Perfect for

experienced agricole fans who sip cask strength slowly

Less suitable for

newcomers, or anyone wanting an easy low-proof pour

The needs time, in the glass and also when tasting!A very complex nose, which adheres to something old! Incredibly intense....also the palate is very diverse, from an old fruit, to wood to fine vegetal aromas...the same continues in the finish.... An excellent Agricoles!!! I am becoming more and more a fan of Agricoles at cask strength!!!

The nose is invitingly sweet (creme brulee!) and fruity. On the palate, the alcohol is evident and the flavor quickly moves towards wood and becomes bitter. This intensifies towards the finish. No doubt from the "technical data" a good rum, but no, with this Agricole I will not warm. The variant with 61.6% (RX5465) I like better, but will also not my favorite.

This is a tasting from 2020 and it's a great rum even at the price tag when released. A well rounded and nicely balanced rum with nice fruits and vanilla. Clear Agricole notes and the empty glass had a nice smoky note with some honey.

I like it a lot better the second time around. However, I still don't quite warm to it. I like the tropical influences such as chilli or coconut.

The typical Depaz markers at a high level. Glue, dried fruit, licorice, honey and grass/sugar cane. Hammer nose! Insanely great mouthfeel. Full and oily. Now also woodier, hardly any fruit and freshness. Banana bread. The finish is a little weaker, could definitely be stronger and longer. 65%? Superbly integrated. Barrel maturity very restrained for its age. With this great rum, Depaz joins the haute volee of agricoles. Liberation, Neisson, (Chantal Comte) La Mauny and then Depaz.
