Aroma visualization from community tastings
Sansibar Caroni 1997
Most tasters land in the high 8s and clearly read it as Caroni — tar, rubber and varnish on the nose, wood and light raisin behind — but a few note the classic notes are dialed down and softer than expected. The palate turns woody and tannic with chocolate, vanilla and dried fruit, though the alcohol sometimes crowds those aromas. One member called it "almost too elegant" for a Caroni.

How does Sansibar Caroni 1997 taste?
Aggregated from 31 community reviews.
Woody, tarry Caroni with a long finish Loved as a true-to-form 23-year Caroni: tar, wood and chocolate with a long finish. The main gripe is the alcohol not always sitting fully integrated on the palate.

A lovely, rich, clearly Caroni nose with tar and rubber, but vanilla, dried fruit and plum are not far off. The palate is a little marked by alcohol, unlike the nose, which somewhat masks the superb perfumes of the nose. But they're there, mechanical workshop, fruit with plum and vanilla. The finish is splendid, once the alcohol has dissipated, with good length on fruit, vanilla, wood and a pastry note. A complex rum, with a beautiful bitterness. The palate is a little too alcoholic, however, so it loses points.

Very well balanced and complex rum. Almost to elegant for a HTR Caroni 😅

Not your typical Caroni, but it does have the typical Caroni notes though they are dialed down. The nose is kind of mild with wood, tar, light rubber and varnish trailed by spice, leather and light raisin. The palate is woody with tar, light rubber and tannins trailed by spice, leather and mango and the empty glass has chocolate and caramel after a while. The finish is medium long with wood, spices and dried fruit.

Good dirtiness, lingers long on the palate and in the finish, and changes on the way. The nose promises a rounder experience than it is in the mouth. I like it very much, great bottling.

Nose is not very distinctive, much less appearent than the Replica and Bristol 97 which I had before, some glue but not much. Nice on palate, less citrusy, more chocolate and woody, nicely spicy, some minerality. Aromatic tobacco pipe finish.
Review by Leo Krüper
Very, very similar to the Bristol 97 20y/o. or the others from the series. Very pleasant to drink due to the 55%. Very long finish.
Review by Adrien B
Premier nez gourmand lourd, en bouche plutôt rond en attaque, s'affirme en fin bouche. Profond, ça envoie bien, c'est la finale qui est la plus plaisant dans ce rhum.
Review by Vincent D
Slightly Caroni nose. Woody. Groudon. Toffee. Mouth likewise. Strong, black tea-like bitterness. Long, woody finish. A fresh, mentholated sensation. The alcohol is not very well integrated.
