Japan Import System Neisson Fût Unique (Japan Import System) 2004

The nose promises sweet, but the palate doesn't deliver it — that's the surprise here. This 2004 Neisson single cask smells of raisins, dried fruit and creamy sugarcane, then turns dry and woody on the tongue: toasted oak, nutmeg, bourbon-barrel spice over fresh grassy cane. One taster needed 20 minutes for it to open into glue and eucalyptus. Long, tannic, spicy finish.

8,5:On the nose, dried fruits like raisins bump into our nosetrils, with nutmeg and sugarcane, peppery, fresh, herbaceous, vegetal, flowery and nutty wood. On aeration, dark chocolate and pastry come out, some resin, as fruits reveal themselves wide open with candied banana, orange and peaches. 8,7:On the palate, the attack is tasty, round, syrupy with sugarcane honey, roasted wood notes like caramel, chocolate, nutty, spicy with nutmeg and dried fruits, orange. The cane is fresh with tea, grassy, flowery and herbaceous, there is some tobacco, hints of licorice and resin. 8,6:The finish is long, dry and tannic, the wood is spicy, roasted, the cane is fresh, grassy, as yellow fruits and dried join forces, perhaps with pear....

It needs 20-30 minutes to develop on the nose. Glue and eucalyptus are dominant. Then pastry, spice, dried and tropical (mango, banana), hash browns, spicy and grassy freshness. Warm, perfectly melted and good strength. Full-bodied, now more wood. Good strength, alcohol equally well integrated. Long, beautiful finish. Peppery spice, citrus and nice sweetness. 2004 is a great Neisson vintage. The youngest lives up to expectations, naturally a little more youthful.

One of the perks of being married to a Japanese is that once in a while she brings home exciting rums. This is one of them and it's a great one. Very fruity with oak and spice. Very smooth on the palate and a wonderful finish. There is something surprisingly fresh from nose to finish.

One the nose: This is very inviting. Such a good balance of fruits and spices. I get raisins, dried fruits. Its sweet. Barrel influence is there to give spices on the nose. Taste: smooth, good mouthfeel. The abv is on the good, pleasant level.on the nose i gave you and impression that this rum would be a leaning to sweeter side, but its not sweet at all. Its woody. but giving you spices from the bourbon barrell and still being silky smooth. Finish: Long finish. First you get the oak then toasted coffee, nutmeg. Bourbon barrel spices are there. Ok,some flavours on taste profile are unfamiliar to me, but they are fascinating at the same time I really am a Neisson fan and again they delivered. The abv and barrel selection and maturation were on point. From nose to the finish this was quite something.

The soft grass flavor is spot on. The aroma is buttery and cheesy, but the flavor is spot on. It's really good.

Neisson

Avg Rating 8.4/10 240 Rums

Neisson is the smallest distillery on Martinique, making under 2 percent of the island's rum, and one of only two still in family hands. Run today by Claudine Vernant Neisson and her son Gregory, it distils on a 1952 all-copper Savalle still, ferments with its own native yeast, and makes what many call the island's finest white rhum. The community rates its aged bottlings among the very best agricole there is.
