Long Pond Plantation Jamaica Finish Rye Whiskey ITP - HJC 1996

Most drinkers come away happy with this one, even if the rye cask sparks debate. It opens like a classic Long Pond — pineapple, banana, esters, burnt sugar — then hands over to the rye finish: cinnamon, pepper, toasted oak, a whiff of smoke. The rye is unmistakable and some feel it buries the tropical fruit. At 49% several call it a touch diluted, wishing for more punch.

Aggregated from 80 community reviews.

Fruity Long Pond meets a bold rye-cask finish Well-liked overall — the rye cask gives it real identity and complexity. The recurring gripe: the finish can steal the show from the fruit, and a few want more proof.

A classic Long Pond from Plantation. The nose is rather shy and reserved, the exotic fruits are discreet, as well as the phenolic notes. Some spices and notes of wood, burnt sugar and toffee come to decorate this rather simplistic and summary profile. We have a firm and phenolic side and some tropical fruits, but it is especially the spices and the wood which arrive in the background which are finally the most noticed. There is a slight smoky side that comes in after a bit of aeration, but the rum remains overall very light and lacks intensity and depth. The finish is short, with some bitter notes, cinnamon, chilli, nuts and caramel that accompany the fruits and a light smoky veil.A rather dull rum that loses too much of its potential with dilution. It would have been interesting to have a version with about ten degrees more. The quality / price ratio is moreover rather debatable.

Really great thing. Beautiful complexity. Fruits and rum at the start and then the flavor transition to Rye Whisky paired with floral notes. The rye profile is very nicely present. Nice one.
