A skilful blend in honor of the famous Tot, evoking the aromas of the various terroirs of the former British colonies. There's luscious, abundant fruitiness on exotic fruits, citrus and dried fruits, but also a good dose of sweet heaviness on caramel and burnt sugar, before rubbing shoulders with darker aromas of woody, roasted coffee and cocoa. There's a hint of esters reminiscent of Jamaican rums. The whole is well balanced. The palate is dry but delicate, with plenty of dark notes. Coffee, dark chocolate, tobacco, sweet spices (vanilla), smoky, roasted notes and greedy woodiness recall a profile that draws on Guyana. Although it loses some of its aromatic palette, it remains a well-crafted rum with well-integrated alcohol. The finish is of decent length, with an equally dark, sweet, gourmand profile. Wood, pepper, vanilla, chocolate and smoky notes dominate, followed by caramel and fruit (dried and tropical). It perhaps lacks a little energy on the long finish. A nice profile for a permanent rum, to reminisce about history, at an affordable price.

So far I've only tried the Master Blenders Reserve from this brand and I already knew that the basic version couldn't keep up. Unfortunately, I like it even less than expected. The nose is still quite pleasant with a hint of caramel and fruit. Too tangy and not very complex on the palate. For me, it's just an average rum that's good for mixing at best.

Overall a quite soft navy styled rum. This 5yo rum from the Scottish IB Black Tot Rum is a blend of rums from Barbados, Guyana and Jamaica. The term “Black Tot” comes from, as most of you know, from the British tradition of giving sailors a daily ration of rum for almost 300 years. The last ration was served on July 31th 1970.

8:On the nose, the rum's navy profile comes across as soft and round. Gunpowder, iodine and copper are here, we notice smoky, roasted profile with burnt sugar, coffee, even Jamaican funkiness, notes of garlic!Soon exotic fruitiness comes in, the rum becomes woody, it is charred.Aeration gets us joined gunpowder and fruit. There is a harmony between full-bodied, fruity and now pastry aromas with baking spices and some herbal, and a hint of flowery notes. Almond, dried banana, resin and prune, with hints of quince paste, very dark cocoa, maybe chocolate and copper with nail polish are nicely balanced. 7,8:On the palate the first attack is syrupy, thick, powdery with caramelized burnt sugar and gunpowder, bit smoky, then nutty, coppery, slightly bitter and astringent notes, buttery and quite balanced.Pastry notes follow.The exotic fruits of the mid-palate are then clothed in cocoa and spices. 7,5:The finish is spicy, vegetal, buttery, caramel, resinous and with molasses, some red fruity notes as blackcurrant, raspberry and licorice in the end.. Edit:31.7.25, it gets better with bottle oxidation, an upgrade to 7.8, 7.3.26

Delicious blend. Nice how the 5 percent Jamaica still comes through well. Superbly integrated alcohol. But perhaps a little too musty in parts, almost peaty. Edit: When I drink it first or directly after something milder like a Barbados rum, I really like it. After a sip of Hampden, however, it becomes musty on the nose and on the palate Guyana completely takes over, the otherwise beautiful Jamaican note is lost and turns a complex blend for the price into a much flatter thing.

It did not impress me at all. Disappointing. Too much alcohol and anonymous aromas. It remains a pleasant after-meal rum, but uninteresting for tasting at a certain level. I expected more from a well reviewed rum...I probably failed to understand it.

A really successful, complex multi-island blend. However, the molasses is a little too dominant for me. And there's a peaty, bitter note in the finish that I don't like. On the other hand, very nice!

mega rum. Great value for money. Taste like butter cookies and without sugar. With lots of vanilla and caramel and no burn. The 46.2% is also quite good. It is harmonious and clean. You should have tried it

Too small for me, but nice for the price. It's easy and tasty. A blend that's not unpleasant, accessible and an introduction to "navy" rums at an affordable price. Very easy to drink.

Today in comparison with the new 2025 Standard Black Tot Blend in the glass. I find significantly more PM notes such as aniseed in the nose of this old version. The palate is coarser and we are more in the feel-good corner for whisky lovers. Still a good blend with a great PLV, the successor is a lot softer due to the lower Guyana content, but also a success. Both are relatively accessible and complex blends at a pleasant drinking strength. First tasting: Black Tot always works. It tastes multi-layered and is not overpowering. Drinking recommendation for on the side 🥃

This was myself first taste of a Black Tot rum. Overall this rum proved to be quite nice and showed why it’s so well regarded in it’s price range. This is a strong value rum and I look forward to trying the 50th anniversary release next.

One smells and tastes the share from Jamaica most clearly. Is that Worthy Park? Great nose that is very round. I just love chocolate caramel with banana :-) then maybe something from Guyana must be there? According to the manufacturer's info, there is also something from Barbados, but that goes down under the Guyana portion. Great blend!

Tasted at Rhumfest quickly. Surprisingly, I'd never taken the time to taste this Blend before, even though it's a product I appreciate. I must say, it's very good value for money. A well-balanced blend, a not too strong reduction, a small price. Very good indeed.

Yoar formally, the 46% in a navy rum annoys me. Spicy and sweet on the nose, a little flat in the mouth but caramel, spice, vanilla and a little fruit. The alcohol is a bit weak, with a vanilla and caramel finish. It's ok, I don't need a bottle of

A direct comparison of the BlackTot Blend from 2019 and the Blend from 2025. The BlackTot from 2019 is more woody and chocolaty in the foreground, while the 2025 is more fruity and more present. Neither is bad for the price level, but neither is a real winner

I kind of hoped I would have liked it more given others review…but…hmmm. No. Too much booze and no juice. I wanna feel more finesse and things happening. A darkish tast with a promise of good stuff but alas…not for me. More like cheap boozy rum. Will tey again another day…might be the gloomy weather.

Fruity aroma with caramel, where the minimum of jamaica that is there shows itself intimately. On the palate, the little bit of jamaica is still playful, but the guyana is more prevalent. However, the alcohol is integrated nicely. I would class this as a so-called transitional rum into the world of rums. Price vs quality is ok.

Tasted in direct comparison with the Black Tot 50, which seems much more intense and complex. The differences come all the more to bear, the longer you let both airing. The 'normal' Black Tot remains on the spot, while the Black Tot 50 very nicely brings out the toasty aromas, chocolate and dried fruit. Interestingly, the Black Tot 50 retains a more complex note even after a slight dilution - to 'level the playing field' so to speak. However, the 'normal' Tot is not bad, on the contrary, it is round and easy to enjoy.

A well-made, affordable blend for relaxed, uninhibited enjoyment. Perhaps a little alcoholic at times, but otherwise the overall picture, characterized by fruity notes and the pleasing caramel-molasses blend, is beautifully harmonious.

Very decent rum considering the price and the lower-than-navy-rum ABV%. A mix of rum from Guyana, Jamaica and Barbados. In the nose it is complex, with hints of coffeebeans and the notes I got, was of fruit, ginger and coffee.

For a Navy Rhum, I find it quite smooth and fruity. It's more suitable and affordable both in taste and price to try the Navy style. Nevertheless, it's a pleasant rum.

I almost felt like I was tasting a spiced one. I didn't feel any of the Jamaican markers that some people talk about in the comments. For me, this is an interesting rum for those who like the Hispanic style and want to try something different. Nothing extraordinary, but a pleasant product for the end of a meal.

The nose is rich, one expects a rather dry and fruity rum. The mouthfeel is slightly sweet with some spices and an alcoholic hint. The finish matches the mouthfeel. This rum is something for beginners and connoisseurs but please don't expect too much. I think the price is ok. I had expected a little more.

Nase: vor allem Holz und Karamell. Zudem tropische Früchte und auch etwas Schokolade/Kakao. An manchen Tagen kommt Jamaika deutlich durch, an anderen eher weniger. Geschmack: wieder Holz und Karamell. Aber auch etwas Frucht (für mich vor allem Banane). Zudem ein wenig Schokolade. Dürfte gerne mehr Frucht haben. PLV sehr gut. An machen Tagen ist der Jamaika Anteil (obwohl es nur 5% sind) sehr schön zu erkennen. An diesen Tagen gefällt er mir ganz gut. An anderen Tagen schmeckt er für mich primär nach Holz und Karamell. Da mag ich ihn dann eher weniger. Brauche ich nicht nochmal.

At first nose it reminds me directly the Foursquare, it gives me a good desire but is more fruity. The alcohol doesn't smell too much, it doesn't seem aggressive. Pineapple, melon maybe. It has indeed a Jamaican side if you think about it but without the strong esters, it is very pleasant. If you let it open up you find warmer aromas like coffee, chocolate and it becomes quite pastry-like and appetizing! First taste = delicious! Blind I would have said that it is a mix between Foursquare and a Jam and it is! Fruity at the beginning then complex with sweet and spicy aromas.

Original tasting notes (19/4/2025) Enjoyable for a simple sipper - would be interested in getting a bottle to see how the rum would transform over time as well as purchase both the old and new bottlings (without and with new Trinidad element of the blend) Updated tasting notes (3/7/2025) Nose is better than I remember - little softer this time and a bit more complex than I remember…. Giving this a fair amount of time in the glass helps elevate your enjoyment…. There’s even a discernible coffee/cocoa/roasted note along with hints of esters from the Jamaican element of the blend! Taste - I’m getting more cinder toffee/butterscotch/burnt caramel notes alongside some additional roasted coffee notes as well Finish is short to medium Bumping the score up from 6/10 to 6.5/10 but I don’t think I can give it higher than that - I like it but I don’t love it Now that I’ve tasted a fair amount of rums in a relatively short space of time, I can confidently say I definitely want to try the new Black Tot Finest Caribbean Rum blend in comparison to see how it fairs (especially as anything Trinidad originating in REALLY enjoying right now!)

The first thing I get on the nose is coffee but this is followed quickly by pineapple and citrus fruits then deep cocoa and vanilla notes. I very mixed but pleasant bag for a rum nose. The palate is more definite than the nose. The Guyana elements show more here. Earthy tobacco, dark chocolate and a touch smoky. After some time, red fruits. The finish has a quick flash of pineapple but then shifts back to tobacco and earthy notes. Overall, not bad, not great. Too much on the earthy side for me.

In the nose dominates perhaps a little more the fruity ester of Jamaica so it is in the taste already spicy and still fruity sweet. Very positive to judge is that the blend is not re-sweetened. Does not need it also absolutely. Great flavor spectacle at a very attractive price.
