Rum Exchange Hampden #001 2013

Hampden fans hunting something off the usual path will find this the most interesting: a 5-year Trelawny pot-still at a punchy 61.5%. Expect dried fruit, sherry, vanilla and leather with plenty of ester funk. Not everyone's happy — one taster caught "old damp cellar" on the nose, another a stray onion note. A splash of water tames the rough edges nicely.

The community says
  • Ester-driven funk
  • Long spicy finish
  • Musty nose

Quite interesting scent, hints of vanilla and dried fruit. In mouth it's sherry, vanilla, oak, brandy, a bit of sweetness and marzipan. A quite long finish with a taste of oak, vanilla and caramel. Good rum for the low age.

Dark, spicy and creamy. The finish gives the Hampden depth and is reminiscent of a Pagos. The alcohol is not ideally integrated, therefore slight deductions. Otherwise exciting bottling!

Adding water helps a lot to add some depth on the palate and push back the slightly off putting foul notes in the nose.

It is in terms of flavour profile for me - a little to intense for that. The odd glass though is really nice and I have thoroughly enjoyed trying this. If you are a Hampden or Jamaican rum fan looking for something a little different then I would highly recommend...
