Velier River Antoine Rivers Royal Grenadian Rum
Almost everyone calls this a wild one-off, and a few simply can't get past the funk. It's an unaged, 69% Grenadian cane-juice rum: green olive, cut sugarcane, minerals, smoke and a meaty, tarry edge, with tropical fruit underneath. Several taste Clairin territory here. The heat is famously well-buried for the proof, though a couple find it too peaty and raw neat.

Aggregated from 204 community reviews.
Wild, smoky Grenadian cane-juice powerhouse Loved as one of the best whites around — vegetal, smoky and intense, with the 69% shockingly well-integrated. A handful find the earth-and-tar profile too much to sip neat.

The distillery founded in 1785, still produce their rum as it was done back in that time. The cane is crushed by a waterwheel driven mill. It’s wild fermented. They don’t use any temperature control and the double retort copper pot stills is heated with dried Bagasse. Finally it’s bottled straight from the stills. They use sugar cane juice instead of molasses, but it’s not an Agricole cause they use different methods. Overall it’s a funky rum rich on esters and congeners. It’s probably not for everyone, but I just love everything around it and I think it beats the Jamaican white Overproof’s.

I was expecting something different. Of course, tastes are personal, but to my nose I just can't like it. In fact, I just find it repelling. It reminds me a lot of a cachaça (which I am not thrilled with) compared to clairin or an agricole from Martinique. On the other hand, on the palate despite the high alcohol content I find it softer and "classic." I would have to try it in blending because neat just isn't "my cup of tea." I would not buy the bottle.

One of my favorite white rums, this begins with a full on assault on the nose and senses. A sort of refined sugar sweetness is the core of the taste, but there are wild notes of olive and chervil as well as a wood smoke ambiance. Dilution brings out a bit of creaminess and more sweetness. On the other hand, I don't particularly like it in a daiq. It somehow emphasizes the vegetal notes. If you do try one, garnish with a blue cheese olive.

Stupendo!

A rather exceptional rum for my part.We fall directly on a super fresh cane well fermented (Vegetable / Vegetables / Green olive / Green pepper), a power worthy of Jamaican with tropical fruits (Banana / Pineapple / Mango) all roasted, smoky and spicy (Nutmeg / Clove) moreover we find empyreumatic notes (Rubber / Peat / Varnish / Copper / Esters) there is even, to top it all off, a little unexpected greediness (Brioche toast / Butter / Honey)In short an UFO of a white, it goes in all directions, it is powerful, good, aromatic, exuberant! 👌

Tasted as a 5cl sample. From the smell it reminds me of the Hampden GH21 only without tropical fruits and less spicy notes. Buttery / cheesy, mineral, fermented and vegetal. Very interesting, but not as fragrant as other rums. Flavor equally exceptional. Smoky, very mineral, spicy and a flavor I know but not from rum but can't place at the moment. For 69% prima integrated alcohol. So far, however, I'm not quite warm to it. River Antoine is really nen unicorn in the rum world. Different and more unusual than all.

Funkyness, herbal freshness, pineapple, awesome ! This is the result of traditional craftsmanship from Grenada. Respect. The 69 % is well integrated and transforms into a wonderful sweetness on the palate, which then brings out pineapple, papaya and a little pear. The sensational, earthy and herbal fresh note even makes room for a hint of vanilla later on. The basic taste remains in the mouth forever and is noticeable even after an hour. Thank you for white rum! 😀

This is a really cool and dicious rum from Grenada! I enjoyed it a lot! Nose: a lot of vegetal an floral notes, various kind of fruity notes and for sure some low ester. Palate: Ester and Solvents meats Smokey, meaty aromas with the taste of the sugarcane in the background. Finish: Mediun long and dry with some kind of not like bacon 😜

Arrives strong on the nose, like a "dirty" Agricole that has been open longer next to the smoker with the spare ribs. The flavor profile is quite funky, fruity and has something of a porked ribeye. Pure a bit too much peat/earth as in a whiskey, but in a daiquiri it integrates extremely well.

tasted with my Clairin reference, the Sajous 2016. The River Antonie has a similar sensational profile to the Sajous. The Sajous is a shade fresher and fruitier, the River Antoine comes even more from the earthy side. The difference is even more pronounced on the palate, with the River Antoine still having a meaty, smoky note on the finish. For me, absolutely equal to the Sajous!

Good experience but too "wild".

14.10.2018 Nice little get together with new rum friends. Notes. Transparent in colour. Nose: Intense, fresh, fruity, citrus, sugarcane, mineral. Palate: fresh, intense, oily, vegetal, mineral, light smoke, fruity. Finish: medium to long, grass, light smoke, citrus.
Review by Double Barrel
Very artisanal production, with certainly quite a few differences from batch to batch. Of the samples I've been able to taste, the 69° and 75° are identical and the alcohol levels indicated are completely fanciful (if anyone else can measure to confirm?). Indeed, a little animal side (leather/stable/meat) wrapped in lots and lots of artichoke. Slightly metallic too. In short, a curiosity to be tasted, but nothing legendary!
Review by Benoit Mahe
Impressive in its animal aspect, intensity and originality. It's great to be able to taste such an artisanal product with so much character.
Review by Gahtanothoa
Nice nose. Seems thin on the palate, which detracts from the overall experience at this proof (might be because of the rum it followed). Still good overall and worth trying.
