Velier River Antoine Rivers Royal Grenadian Rum
Almost everyone calls this a wild one-off, and a few simply can't get past the funk. It's an unaged, 69% Grenadian cane-juice rum: green olive, cut sugarcane, minerals, smoke and a meaty, tarry edge, with tropical fruit underneath. Several taste Clairin territory here. The heat is famously well-buried for the proof, though a couple find it too peaty and raw neat.
The community says- Well-buried 69%
- Huge complexity
- But: Peaty, earthy neat

One of my favorite white rums, this begins with a full on assault on the nose and senses. A sort of refined sugar sweetness is the core of the taste, but there are wild notes of olive and chervil as well as a wood smoke ambiance. Dilution brings out a bit of creaminess and more sweetness. On the other hand, I don't particularly like it in a daiq. It somehow emphasizes the vegetal notes. If you do try one, garnish with a blue cheese olive.

The distillery founded in 1785, still produce their rum as it was done back in that time. The cane is crushed by a waterwheel driven mill. It’s wild fermented. They don’t use any temperature control and the double retort copper pot stills is heated with dried Bagasse. Finally it’s bottled straight from the stills. They use sugar cane juice instead of molasses, but it’s not an Agricole cause they use different methods. Overall it’s a funky rum rich on esters and congeners. It’s probably not for everyone, but I just love everything around it and I think it beats the Jamaican white Overproof’s.

I was expecting something different. Of course, tastes are personal, but to my nose I just can't like it. In fact, I just find it repelling. It reminds me a lot of a cachaça (which I am not thrilled with) compared to clairin or an agricole from Martinique. On the other hand, on the palate despite the high alcohol content I find it softer and "classic." I would have to try it in blending because neat just isn't "my cup of tea." I would not buy the bottle.

Stupendo!

A rather exceptional rum for my part.We fall directly on a super fresh cane well fermented (Vegetable / Vegetables / Green olive / Green pepper), a power worthy of Jamaican with tropical fruits (Banana / Pineapple / Mango) all roasted, smoky and spicy (Nutmeg / Clove) moreover we find empyreumatic notes (Rubber / Peat / Varnish / Copper / Esters) there is even, to top it all off, a little unexpected greediness (Brioche toast / Butter / Honey)In short an UFO of a white, it goes in all directions, it is powerful, good, aromatic, exuberant! 👌

Funkyness, herbal freshness, pineapple, awesome ! This is the result of traditional craftsmanship from Grenada. Respect. The 69 % is well integrated and transforms into a wonderful sweetness on the palate, which then brings out pineapple, papaya and a little pear. The sensational, earthy and herbal fresh note even makes room for a hint of vanilla later on. The basic taste remains in the mouth forever and is noticeable even after an hour. Thank you for white rum! 😀

This is a really cool and dicious rum from Grenada! I enjoyed it a lot! Nose: a lot of vegetal an floral notes, various kind of fruity notes and for sure some low ester. Palate: Ester and Solvents meats Smokey, meaty aromas with the taste of the sugarcane in the background. Finish: Mediun long and dry with some kind of not like bacon 😜
Review by Christoph
Arrives strong on the nose, like a "dirty" Agricole that has been open longer next to the smoker with the spare ribs. The flavor profile is quite funky, fruity and has something of a porked ribeye. Pure a bit too much peat/earth as in a whiskey, but in a daiquiri it integrates extremely well.
Review by mto75
tasted with my Clairin reference, the Sajous 2016. The River Antonie has a similar sensational profile to the Sajous. The Sajous is a shade fresher and fruitier, the River Antoine comes even more from the earthy side. The difference is even more pronounced on the palate, with the River Antoine still having a meaty, smoky note on the finish. For me, absolutely equal to the Sajous!
Review by DosenZorn
Tasted as a 5cl sample. From the smell it reminds me of the Hampden GH21 only without tropical fruits and less spicy notes. Buttery / cheesy, mineral, fermented and vegetal. Very interesting, but not as fragrant as other rums. Flavor equally exceptional. Smoky, very mineral, spicy and a flavor I know but not from rum but can't place at the moment. For 69% prima integrated alcohol. So far, however, I'm not quite warm to it. River Antoine is really nen unicorn in the rum world. Different and more unusual than all.

14.10.2018 Nice little get together with new rum friends. Notes. Transparent in colour. Nose: Intense, fresh, fruity, citrus, sugarcane, mineral. Palate: fresh, intense, oily, vegetal, mineral, light smoke, fruity. Finish: medium to long, grass, light smoke, citrus.
Review by Benoit Mahe
Impressive in its animal aspect, intensity and originality. It's great to be able to taste such an artisanal product with so much character.
Review by Jean Louisss
A slap that can be taken without moderation. And what's more, a rum that evolves a lot.
Review by Serge
Edit: have here in the context of a Clairin Cross tasting again corrected upwards. Is simply one of the most awesome whites.Wonderful unaged rum with a wonderful flavor. Fruit, alcohol, olive, minerality, smoke and something slightly burnt at the back. A must have white rum - but also a bit high priced. In the direct PLV, the Clairins are in front ... but also only because of the price. In direct comparison on the island he hangs all Renegades without effort. If not in the nose, at the latest on the palate.
Review by Mirco
Review by crazyforgoodbooze
with 69% already really a blast, tropically fermented, fruity and somewhat metallic and strangely winter spicy warm... exciting aromatics, comes in the daiquiri really cool, but also knocks you out of the lathes quite nicely :D only 70€ are just for an overproof from Grenada something exaggerated...
Review by F.L.O.
Floral, strong and a nice portion of sugar cane juice. Perfectly integrated alcohol makes this rum terrific as a sipper and especially as a daiquiri. One of the best unaged in this price segment

Exciting white rum. Great smoke note!In the daiquiri the hit! 🍸
Review by Christian Rudt
Simply insanely intense. Definitely a must have for every rum lover.Somehow totally round and dirty at the same time that you have to get 😀Hoffentlich renovate the da never 😅 Since many stored rums what abgucken can. Even if it is difficult to compare.Urgent recommendation! With 69% of course very intense.Equal to a Daiquri 😋 Geiles stuff!

Review by rumcokki
An explosion of veggies on the nose, feels like you're inside a vegetable garden, tomato more prominent. Also rubber and glue. Satisfying to the taste, softness in the mouth.
Review by Eric Frechin
Review by Timo Groeger
Oh yes, even for a white, I really like this one. The nose is fresh and herbal, olive and ester are also recognizable. The palate is herbal, mineral and intense. Very funky and solvents are also recognizable.
Review by Frank
Crass! Very similar and on par with the good Clairins.Nose: fermented and very veg. Almost like stale flower water (there were guaranteed geraniums in there) but a bit more lovely. Asparagus and kohlrabi water with a honey sweetness. Tart papaya. Vinegar-heavy esters. Palate: the 69% is there. This makes it seem almost creamy. It comes salty-bitter-sweet. Again, very veggy and green. Maybe something along the lines of cucumber and olive. But it is fruity, perhaps more in the direction of fermented raspberry. Out the back, it even seems slightly smoky with cold tobacco.Super interesting!
Review by Renato
Beautiful rich and floral nose. The mouth is exuberant with smoky and peaty notes. One has the impression of tasting seafood accompanied by an Islay.
Review by Johnny Rumcask
Review by Lukas Jäger
69%, which comes with a good amount of power around the corner! All the more surprising how pleasant the alcohol for a white rum in this order of magnitude comes along. Very complex, almost creamy in the mouth, which can also be enjoyed neat without problems. In the daiquiri a blast, there he makes really fun, for it he would probably also made. Next to the rum Fire, which I find on most days even a touch better, my choice for the daiquiri!
Review by Djehey
A very special rum in terms of provenance and taste. You can really sense the rustic character of this grand aroma rum. A very earthy side, mixed with ester aromas. Add to that a high alcohol content. You've got to love it... Personally, I prefer more classic profiles for the moment. Update: either my tastes have evolved, or it is indeed better. But tonight, I'm really enjoying it!
Review by Mentalo
Pflanzliche Noten, Zuckerrohr, leicht fruchtig, medizinische und mineralische Noten. Leicht bitter.
Review by Martin Augustin
A variety of aromas meet you on the nose. Sugar cane, esters, olive and some lime are noticeable. The taste is then meaty, smoky, peppery and a little peaty. Very unique, but incredibly cool. Long, intense finish with smoked pineapple.
Review by Mathieu C.
Good experience but too "wild".
Review by abaker-rum
What a flavorful rum! The palate is intense with a mix of sugarcane and tropical fruit, but that is intertwined with a smokey and peppery aspect. The finish is long lasting and evolves. I would highly recommend this rum.
Review by lars
Review by Jussi Piirainen
Ok, at 69%abv this something that decided to approach with respect. On the nose: Grassy, well balanced sugarcanejuice aroma. Taste:The high abv and ester obviously kick in actully quite pleasantly first, but once you work with it you find this palate of tropical fruits and vegetal flavours. Finish: Long finish. Overripe fruits and vegetal notes. I actually like the finish on this one, because this bring so much more notes and flavours on the table possibly due high abv. Good sipper once you know how to handle the abv and possibly interesting tool as a mixer. Its a buy for me.
Review by Émile Shevek
The nose is very disruptive with notes of solvent, ester/funky, ripe, fermented tropical fruit, brine, capers, cheese and white truffle, WOW! The palate is an explosion, warm, enveloping, full-bodied, oily and assertive, with funky and estery notes, vegetal, meaty umami, lychee, fermented fruit, peat, pepper and slight savoriness. Long finish with notes of aged cheese, oil and esters. Aged cheese and roasted porchetta in bbq sauce still remain in the empty glass. A real surprise, one of a kind, a raw gem, but alive, identifiable and dynamic. (Ps: I can only imagine what this Rum would be if it were aged for more than 15yr)
Review by Double Barrel
Very artisanal production, with certainly quite a few differences from batch to batch. Of the samples I've been able to taste, the 69° and 75° are identical and the alcohol levels indicated are completely fanciful (if anyone else can measure to confirm?). Indeed, a little animal side (leather/stable/meat) wrapped in lots and lots of artichoke. Slightly metallic too. In short, a curiosity to be tasted, but nothing legendary!
Review by Arnaud Faverjon
What an experience! A beautiful, very saline, arch-complex slap in the face.
Review by Rhum Mirror 🇧🇪
On the nose: very vegetal fresh cane, spices, olive, esters and even something slightly meaty. It is very attractive. The attack in mouth is round and velvety. We have a very sweet sugar cane with fruity notes of pineapple and mango. The finish is incredibly long for a white. Mineral and candied fruits. Personally, I love it, I really took pleasure on this sample. Being a mystery sample, maybe the fact of deconstructing it without knowing its origin allowed me to appreciate it.
Review by Boletus

Exceptional aromatic bomb! Amazing aromas as amazing as they are infinite!! 🙂🙂
Review by Gahtanothoa
Nice nose. Seems thin on the palate, which detracts from the overall experience at this proof (might be because of the rum it followed). Still good overall and worth trying.
Review by Morgan Garet
It's raw and round at the same time, vegetal and mineral, sugar cane in the mouth, dirty with solvents, glue and a metallic side. And all that ends on a long greedy freshness. Only small defect, I do not have the fruits.
Review by Michael Ihmels 🇩🇪
Oha here is a very nice Velier River. Very alcoholic at 69 percent, but you can't really taste it. Smells strongly of esters. But fruits such as pears also come to the fore here. A very nice bottling.
Review by RumCzar
This is my favorite cane juice rum. It's a good balance of vegetable funk and high abv. I drink this neat and with lime. I will rebuy.
Review by arno
Review by Kodai
Rivera Antoine white rum is not for the faint of heart! It is definitely one you must try to expand your flavor profile and ‘push the envelope’ of your mental reference points for flavor. It’s funky, and full of its own tarry character. It’s great in cocktails (especially a daiquiri), but if you’re brave, try it neat with a splash of water. Personally, I will continue to add a splash to some cocktails to give them some punchy character.

Whow!
