Nearly everyone here rates this Albion in the 9s, though a few honestly prefer its El Dorado 2004 sibling. What's in the glass: thick, oily Demerara with dark chocolate, dried prunes, licorice, caramel and a savory, salted-peanut edge one taster called "savoury, thick, almost like a brown sauce." Full-proof at 60.4%, but the alcohol sits well-integrated. A rare, tropical-aged bottle for people already deep into dark rum.

A rum that you can't really dislike. A super smooth, sweet profile without ever being clumsy, sticky or uninteresting. The other aromas of smoke, spice and nuts are also embedded so harmoniously that there is neither too much bitterness, spiciness nor too much sweetness. Unfortunately, this balance is somewhat at the expense of complexity, which is why I do not consider it to be of the highest order. Nevertheless, the quality here is impressive; an undoubtedly excellent rum that shows its aroma profile to perfection.

... The Old Velier Demerara rum is the best thing you can taste in the rum world. The rums were aged in the tropics for several years by mistake and nobody refilled the barrel. The Andel tax was 90% or more, which is why the taste is especially full and intense. Even though it is an extra expensive product, I recommend to taste a rum from this series at least once in your life.

A great rum. Heavy sweetness, fruit, leather, vanilla, licorice and a little mint and salted caramel. The wood is much more present and intense compared to the ElDorado. The ED is also sweeter and more pleasing. A little more recent rum history in the glass🥃🥹🤗I was very excited about this sample. It is a top rum without a doubt. Impressive for the time of its release. I personally like the ED 04 better in the sample today. Overall, it seems more complex and full-bodied to me. When I think about how rum has developed in terms of quality over the last 10-15 years, this rum and its bottler have been very influential. From today's point of view, however, I would certainly not pay 4000 Eddies for this rum, especially when the other one is still available for 250.

A rum as rare as it is expensive, but of undeniable quality. The nose is absolutely divine, very well-balanced and greedy between exotic fruits and the chocolate, caramelized and spicy notes of Demerara. A hint of glue is also present. The rum is very complex and deep on the palate, leaning towards a dark profile but also very fruity and exuberant. The alcohol is perfectly integrated. The finish is very long, continuing the dark framework of the palate with a few notes of tea, and is as delicate as it is aromatic. An intense rum offering a unique experience. It's a pity that this exceptional nectar has become inaccessible and a speculative product.

I've been looking forward to this one for a while now. Really a very good rum, just the way I like it. The best thing about it: it's actually true ... not even that different from the 2004 from the ED rare collection. I find the tropical maturation here more on point with a great balance of wood maturity, sweetness on the tip of the tongue, dryness on the palate, dried fruits and spices as well as great hints of nuts and chocolate. Not as chocolaty as the ED. Has the nose just ahead of its ED brother ... but clearly loses the price-pleasure race. But a real treat 🤤

Tasted at Liquid Leuven ‘23, so my review remains rather concise. The aroma is a fragrant blend of wood, spices and herbs. It opens with ancient woodland smells of pinetree bark, moss, licorice and lavender. A heart of dried fruits blends into a sweeter sensation of raw sugar and vanilla. These woods and sugars are then engulfed by camphor and gluestick. It’s very musty and cooling leading into a flowery black tea top note. On the palate much alike the nose, heavy and dry. Incredibly rich flavours of dried fruits and spices. Nutmeg is introduced furthering the arid idea. Then incredible development into resin, vetiver and licorice, followed by more must and herbal black tea. The finish is incredibly long and rich. Black tea dominant, sweet and herbal, with oily subtones.

Eine Seltenheit im Glas der ihr Ruf voraneilt. Sehr komplexer Rum mit viel dunklen Aromen. Die Früchte bewegen sich im Hintergrund. Sehr interessant ist die Minze in der Nase die für das gewisse etwas sorgt. Leider nicht ganz mein Rum, aber das ist klagen auf hohem Niveau.

The nose perfumes the room with all the flavors one can love from Demerara. The palate is probably the most complex I've ever tasted. It is pliant and sticky. Greedy but without excess. We go from caramel, to spices, to chocolate, to fruits; the whole without any false note. The finish is endless, for my greatest pleasure.

Die Erwartungen waren hoch, nachdem dieser schon so einige ausgezeichnete Bewertungen hat. Für mich sind diese leider nicht in Gänze erfüllt worden. Die Nase ist ausgezeichnet, sogar am nächsten Tag duftet das leere Glas noch herrlich, aber am Gaumen konnte er mich leider nicht vollends überzeugen, trotz längerer Standzeit und Verkostungen. Aber alles in allem ein topp Rum.

Blind tested the Velier 94 against the El Dorado 04. Wow. Both of them! This one is more distinctive, woody, spicy and powerful. The ED rounder, more pleasing, fruity-chocolaty.ExactNose: spicy-woody-floral-fruity. Tart, dry attack. Brown and spicy, some chestnut. Cherry orange. Then the dried plum. Lots of wood with vanilla. Light licorice note with caramel and spicy sandalwood.Palate: strong, woody, complex and full-bodied. Pleasantly bitter, some nutmeg, dried plum with bitter orange peel. Malty, brown, dark, toasty. Licorice at the back.Hammer!

A rum that has become a "legend" among connoisseurs and investors.Tasted several times to really understand it.A thick, dense and "aromatically" very "black" rum.All of them intersect: tobacco, leather, flowers, dried fruits, candied fruits, but the domination is clearly established on the toasted, oily and spicy side. Thick and oily on the palate, spicy, toasted, vinous and empyreumatic.Long and dry finish on hyper dominant tannins, nice astringency on big leather, tobacco and prune notes. Great finish!

re-tasted November 2025. Increased my rating slightly. heavy and intense rum, the cask dominates the herbal and fruity notes on both nose and palate. A hint of polish and caramel. Slightly below the Velier Enmore 95 I tasted same evening. Both not as mind blowing as expected.

Even the nose gives a hint of where the journey is heading. Coconut, caramel and sour cherries. All underpinned with hints of cinnamon and liquorice. Nice and thick and oily on the palate. Dark chocolate, dried fruit, wood and vanilla. A long, intense finish with a super delicious caramel sweetness. For me, this is one of the best rums I have tasted! I'm curious to see how it compares directly with the ED.

Nose is great, fresh and breezy with menthol and sugar plum. Love it and bodes well. Mouth is firm and broad, a little anise and menthol but a deep barrel and caramel as well. Taking time with it and really comes to life. Incredible complexity here. Finish is long and waxy, a little edge and spice. Top notch

Al naso intenso ma elegante e rotondo. Prevalgono note di caramello e miele di castagno. Alcolicità non pungente. Al palato continua ad essere elegante e rotondo con note scure di vaniglia, liquirizia, cacao e noce moscata. Finale lunghissimo ed astringente. Bellissimo.
