Hampden Rum Fire Velvet Overproof

Splash a few ml into a Mai Tai or Blue Hawaii and it lifts the whole drink; most people mix it rather than sip it. This is Hampden's white overproof, so expect banana, green apple, pineapple and a whiff of glue — but one taster called it a "doable entry level" high-ester Jamaican, since it's softer and less pungent than the funkier bottles.

The community says
  • Bright ester fruit
  • Softer than expected

It tastes very much like the Rum Fire so I believe it’s probably the same rum in another bottle. This bottling was for the European market I’ve heard. The finish is rather long. Overall it’s funky, potent, complex and powerful without being too pungent.

Some funk and vegetal notes on the nose. Surprisingly sweet on the palate with a fruity finish.

Another great treat for the glue-sniffers among us. Hampden has really brought out a smooth rum here that has the genes of the Rum Fire family, but doesn't rush through the front door with a 16-ton chisel excavator without even trying to knock or ring the bell. Makes an excellent addition to a Blue Hawaii Mai Tai :-)

.. Hampden, legendarni jamajska destilerka, ktera krome rumu produkuje take alkohol do parfemu. Ve vsech rumech z teto destilerky ucitite divoke estery, po kterych cely vas organizmus nasakne vuni zluteho tropickeho ovoce - manga, papaji, anansu, broskvi. Jeden z rumu, ktere "must try before die"

I went to Rum Depot in Berlin where I’ve bought a bottle and it was a great experience. I have tried several overproof Jamaican white rums (no regular RF tho) and I have to say, compared to other bottles like Rum-Bar, and other even much higher ester high-end stuff, which I have surprisingly also enjoyed, RFV is actually all in all not that pungent and also less baked/overripe banana dominated. It’s got plenty of esters, yes, but It’s more balanced between banana, green apple, pineapple etc. Also you don’t get that hard smack of nail polish, glue, septic tank :)) (aka totally out of order festival toilet) I’ve smelled with few 500-1000 esters bottles they’ve got, but you get some of it in moderation. So I would even recommend it as a doable entry level for high ester un-aged Jamaicans, which you can use in very small doses to your cocktails, even just 5ml or less will make a difference. The price over here is 11€ for 0.35L (means 22€ RFV vs 32€ RF per 700ml bottle) it’s a great value. Enjoy! ps: After few days without comparison you can definitely smell the banana first but it’s not crazy. I occasionally stop by my mini bar and smell it, its addictive ^^
