Don Q Single Barrel 2009
Most tasters land in the "pleasant but not thrilling" camp, and that's fair. It's a light Puerto Rican column-still rum with vanilla, dried apricot, orange peel and a spicy, woody backbone. The cask strength gives it real spine — one Don Q skeptic admitted this release won him over. A few note the alcohol pokes through and the finish runs short.

Aggregated from 48 community reviews.
Light Spanish-style sipper with woody spice Well-liked as an honest, light Spanish-style sipper with vanilla and dried fruit. Most call it good rather than gripping; the alcohol isn't always fully integrated and the finish is short.

Absolute PLV cracker. I've just had it in my glass again after ages and I'm really surprised that some of it is still available. So much flavor for 40€ was really cool!

Really nice light summer rum. Also great for beginners for the price.

Normally I don't like Don Q as such because they're too sweet, but this release is really nice. Cask strenght really adds to the overall profile. Fruity, sweet and spices mix very well with the light wood. Price to quality is very good and I may buy a few because it's a very good beginner rum as well.
Review by Montana
It smells relatively strong of alcohol, fruity and sweet, somewhat spicy. The taste is strong, spicy and slightly sweet, pleasant. The alcohol comes through even more strongly in the finish.

Interesting flavor profile, but the alcohol could be a little better integrated.

Rum talks no 4.

The DON Q 2009 is an authentic light rum in Spanish style from a giant multicolumn still: without sugar, without additives and without solera hocus-pocus. Serrallés manages to tropically age a very light rum for a long time and yet not destroy the delicacy of the distillate. Of course, the wood is quite present, but in a light, sweet, vanilla way not tannic and heavy. The fact that the distillate remains present is also due to the increased alcohol content. This brings some spiciness, but provides sufficient backbone.

I was expecting something different I'll have to try again

Supposed to be the best of the Don-Q range so let’s see what we have. Nose is ok but a bit lacking, toffee and raisins, with some alcohol volatile ester notes, pleasant bit not inviting me to jump in. Mouth is reasonable, orange and raisin with some caramel that offsets it well. Finish is short but enjoyable actually with some prune and raisin alongside confectionery style crème brûlée. Overall it’s a solid mid range sipper, and also makes a great rum and coke. Nothing top drawer but a solid rum I would be happy to savour over an evening

Alcohol could be much better integrated, overall relatively inconsequential but also one of the few halfway decent Puerto Rico Rums.

For my first Don Q I chose this one, because I'm not so into the standards. The nose pleases me quite well, characterized by vanilla, dried fruit and spice, all in a good mix. Taste-wise it can't keep up, it's quite sharp(alcoholic),with lots of wood and spice. The barrel remains on the palate, as well as the spiciness. Price fully OK. Let's see what's still coming so....

Times not high-level rum and still without additives... you can try. Did not know Don Q yet. Clearly a representative of the Spanish style.Nose: fruity-woody and as the first light cigar tobacco, wrapped in vanilla and toffee. The fruit goes in the direction of green apple with some lemon. Seems quite light overall, the alcohol stings a bit despite being only 49%. Fairly ok. 72Palate: spicy-woody and tobacco here as well. A bit spicy at first though and slightly salty-bitter, pepper with a hint of caraway. Overall a bit short and flat. 68Not bad, but not interesting enough either. The tobacco note, however, I find quite good.
