Long Pond Plantation Extreme No. 3 HJC 1996
One member calls this the winner of the 1996 Extreme trio — the most intense but still elegant. Expect a big, funky Long Pond: lacquer, glue and solvent up front, ripe tropical fruit (mango, papaya, banana), then a drying wave of oak, licorice and baking spice. Several find it leans more spice-and-wood than fruit, and drier than expected. A long, peppery finish that warms.

Still one of my favorite long ponds.

A bit too much spiciness for my taste, the fruit notes are quite lost on the palate. There are clearly better Long Ponds.

Thanks first of all to Leo. Always nice to be able to talk you into something. A very great Long Pond in my opinion. I like it more than well. The alcohol is also well integrated. For me now one of the best Long Ponds I've had in a glass. Great that I was allowed to try it. I wish Planteray (formerly Plantation) would bottle more things like this.

8,8:On the nose, this rum is very elegant and refined. The sweet spices are served on an exotic wood bark, a bit resinous, where some cherry, very ripe banana and black plum pits already rest. The tropical fruit juices are thick and slightly oxidized, the molasses a bit vegetal. The aeration emphasizes perhaps notes of French yellow wine, like muscat or banyuls. The fruits are sweet, honeyed with roasted nuts, of course tropical and exotic, very ripe. 9:On the palate, the attack is intense, with stone fruits. The tannins are felt imminently, our tasting buds are attacked with spices, burnt wood, believe it or not, chamomile, a bit dry.The fruits are delicious. The almond complements the stone fruits and the resin with pastry-like vegetal molasses, fruits are also pastry-like and candied. 8,7:The finish is dry, with charred wood, a bit tannic, spicy with pepper, baking spices like nutmeg, clove etc. and pleasantly fruity brioches...

Danke Leo! 😊

I just returned from a luxury tasting I was invited to and I'm actually a bit tipsy this time because all the rums had a high proof. This tasting was Plantation extreme only and this is the fourth one of the six. This is a very nice estery Jamaican rum where the finish lasts for a very, very long time. Very well balanced between proof, spice and tropical fruits. The price is a bit high but still OK I think.

Complex notes of some wood, something herbal then again tropical fruity (including mango) alternate in the mouth. A really all-round successful rum from the nose, over the tongue to the palate.

Not quite as round/accessible as other low ester long ponds. The dirty notes and the mint are somewhat reminiscent of bottlings from Trinidad (TDL). In addition leather, licorice, spices, yellow fruits and caramel. From memory similar to the Tamosi LSO. Delivers on the palate exactly what the nose promises. I like it, but unfortunately it's overpriced.

For me the winner out of the 1996 Plantation Extreme bottlings. Most intense flavor profile out of the three while still very elegant overall.

TECA/TECC Tasting bei Leo.

An der Nase Karamell mit Vanille. Leichte esternoten. Am Gaumen ein wirklich schöner Lakritz Geschmack. Gepaart mit tropischen Früchten. Mango oder sogar eine richtige Papaya. Etwas Gummibärihes. Schöner Abgang.. bleibt eine gute Weile stehen. Schönes Ding. In der Nachtverkostung bestätigt.

Tasted blind first. I was taken aback by the nose, which seemed too caramelized to be Jamaican. I had very ripe fruit, wood. But also very present vanilla and caramel. On the palate, I was surprised by the sweetness and fruitiness. The attack is spicy, but the alcohol quickly disappears in favor of very ripe fruit. Very pleasant. Sweet, fragrant, coating, spicy. Superb. I thought of a Savanna. But I wouldn't have bet on a Jamaican. Once I knew, of course, I found the markers again and told myself I'd been out of it... In the end, it's VERY good.

The second exteme 3 brother. Again a beautiful long ponder, again heaps of fruit in the aroma, a touch of technicality. In the taste there is again a lot of fruit, technical notes of polish remover and glue. All in all, a wonderfully complex piece.
Review by N’ours
Fruity and greedy rum, subtly spiced, a very nice balance, a nice final length, peppery but sweet at the same time.
