Velier Arawaks Clairin Vaval Caivaillon #6 2019
"Dirty as the clairins," as one taster put it, but that's the whole appeal here. This unaged Haitian pot-still clairin from sugarcane juice goes hard on brine, olive, cut grass and stewed tomatoes, with bright citrus and a coppery mineral finish. A few members caught tropical fruit and fresh cane underneath. Let it breathe — several say it opens up and gets easier.

Dirty like many Clairins. These Haitian rums are not for sensitive palates. They can be aggressive just like this Vaval, but tasting after tasting you learn to appreciate and love them. If aerated for a while it is better.

Like any Haitian stinker, this one is a must try. The aroma is fruity, citrusy, salty, cane-like. For me, it's one of the most accessible white rums from Haiti. Saltiness, fruit, cane, minerals and much more in the taste.

Exciting earthy sake notes on the finish. Very green in taste and the nose has the typical olive notes of a Clairin in my opinion where it is rather the olive water.

Number 1 from the community tasting. Thank you RumTaTa!At first contact I had to think of the Rum-Bar White Overproof and have a very fruity profile perceivede, after the Clairin Tasting I find him much greener and more herbal. The mouth is dominated by tropical fruits and sweet fresh sugar cane and young spices (ginger, anise)The finish adds a nice minerality and a pleasant freshness. Very tasty.

Nose: Lots of Brine, some banana runts, grassy Pallet: Bright citrus, lemon, cut grass, stewed tomatoes, some slight hints of hay, some baking spice (bitter chocolate)v Finish: minerally, copper, really lingers

Thanks to RumTaTa.The first unaged Clairins that I was allowed to taste. My first association was River Antoine Grenada. Not my favorite, but very solid. Alcohol is well integrated.
