J. Wray & Nephew LTD. Appleton White Overproof
Here's the surprise: for 63% it drinks tamer than the number suggests. Expect overripe banana, pineapple, citrus and that glue-and-solvent Jamaican funk, with a grassy, vegetal edge. Most people keep it as their cocktail workhorse, but plenty sip it with a splash of water or lime and come away happy. Long, spicy, slightly salty finish.

One of the epic rum mixers, used by Victor Bergeron when he created the Mai Tai back in 1944. The nose is mostly fruity and spicy. On the palate, the fruitiness dominates with flavors of citrus, banana, and pineapple. The finish has a certain sweetness and a long spiciness.

Love this overproof. Almost tame enough to sip, makes a great addition to many drinks, including an Agricole old fashioned

Typical of Jamaican rums it is the perfect rum to make mai tai. Pure I like less.
Review by LukaŽiga
7,8:On the nose, the first impression we get are overripe, fermented tropical fruits like banana, pineapple and medicinal notes like esters, solvents, vegetal tones with mushrooms, lavender and grass. On aeration, the rum is spicy and smoky, fresh and herbaceous, citrus fruits are out, there is some rubber and a yoghurt note. 7,7:On the palate, the attack is funky, estery, fruity with overripe banana, pineapple, citrus, quite intense. Then vegetal notes arise with grass, floral touch, spices like salt. 7,6:The finish is medium long with esters, still funky, dry, a bit smoky, spicy with black pepper, salt, fruity with tropical, citrus fruits and vegetal, herbaceous with tea, grass. Edit:19.9.25

Right in your face! Ya man :D still one of the best price-performance Jamaican rums. Absolutely perfect base for making homemade Falernum but also makes great daiquiris, Wray & Ting, and more. A must-have rum for every Tiki bar.

Well, you don't need to say too much about this rum. Everyone knows this one. It is and remains a very good standard/basic mixer at a fair price. In my opinion, it should not be missing in any home bar

I tried this years ago before I got into actual rums (when I thought Diplomatico was the best thing going 😂) and thought at the time that it was awful and tasted like paint stripper. How wrong I was! Tasting it again now having developed my palate and this is smooth, floral, funky, even slightly sweet. I fully get why it is a great staple for many bars. Actually reminds me of a much more subtle version of the Clairin Sajous I have.

Pure not my world, but the classic among the white Unaged Jamaican Rums.
Review by Decky Hicks Doughty
The nose has a big hit of tropical fruit and smoky molasses. There's also some underlying citrus. The fruit from the nose is still there in the palette. Grassy notes also present. On the sweeter end of white rums. The finish is salty and earthy. Some peppery points. Overall, it's not the best Jamaican overproof. But a lots of good competition there.
Review by HenryL
In direct comparison to the Rum Fire and Rum Bar:Clearly more restrained nose. But pleasantly fruity with a slight citrus note. The alcohol comes through the strongest here.On the palate, sweet tropical fruits with a slight floral note that takes over the reins in the finish. This bottle has been up for a while, so maybe some of the power has been lost. For me place 2.In the Wray
Review by Loris Bozzetti
I’m giving this one a 9 because for me it’s truly the best white rum I’ve ever had. I bought it because it was recommended to me, especially for mixing. But I have to say, even neat it’s so well-balanced, smooth, and tasty. Sure, you definitely notice the 63% ABV, but the flavor is amazing. I’m really surprised. Definitely a rum that will become a standard at my place from now on.

"So cool!! A gentle, full-bodied, fruity slap in the face... I need one! To sum up, my degustation notes: On the nose: Solvents, Ester, Tropical fruit, Very ripe, Vanilla, Vegetal In the mouth: Intense, Funky, Ester, Pineapple, Very ripe, Sugar, Sweet Finish: Vegetal, Mango". 23 euros a bottle, what more could you ask for a good daiquiri?
Review by Beancheese
This is awful to sip (perhaps could settle and open up with some water) and is pretty intense on the nose as well. The alcohol is about as poorly integrated as one can find but it’s not trying to do that. What this does have is fruit and funk and because of that you have yourself a great mixer at a fantastic value. Since I rate rums based on the experience of sipping I should be scoring this a 6. I can’t bring myself to do it though since I feel it would do it injustice. As a mixer this would be 7.5+ so I feel I can sleep easy settling in the middle and calling this a 7.

The white overproof badly. Super for mixing. Since also succeeds the Mai Tai without the legendary Appleton Legend.

Absoluter Klassiker. Brennt mir leider zu sehr. Im Direktvergleich gewinnt der Rum Bar deutlich.
Review by abaker-rum
A pungent mix of rotting pineapples and bananas in a good way. There is a sweetness on the palate but it comes in hot at 63% abv. There is a very good funky fruit that lends it self to this being a very good cocktail rum.
Review by Kevin Sorensen 🇩🇰
The score is for the use ability in this mixer. Lays a very good and strong foundation in the mixer.
Review by C Ap Adam
Whilst I love the intensity this brings as a mixer, I'm enjoying it perfectly fine cut down to ~50% ABV and sipping neat. I get less bananas and pineapples than others though, and more on rhubarb and citrus fruits - green, sour, tart, and the like. The finish is straightforward and long. Hyfryd. The aftertaste of wet celery sticks and cucumbers is a strange one. Totally worth it.

Review by Eric Frechin
Review by Anton Krioukov
Wow! This may be my favorite expression from this distillery. I could wear this sent as a perfume. This is one of my favorite mixers of all time, and after building up your proof tolerance, it makes a fantastic sipper. I’m always surprised at how complex and yet still approachable this distillate is.

Update, because I think that you should not evaluate this rum according to how he tastes pure, I do not really enjoy him. In the cocktail but ne ne decent grenade. On the nose, the grassy notes predominate over the fruit umd the esters. In the taste, however, these then come to the fore.
Review by Louis Britten
Good for getting completely smashed by and making strong cocktails but never on its own or just a mixer.
Review by Godspeed
A classic and very popular Jamaican expression that however is not very typical for the style. You will not find a lot of hogo here but as a cocktail overproof it has a good niche carved out for itself. Can’t wait to try Rum Fire from Hampden which I’ve heard is more flavorful and less sharp than this one. Not to say I don’t like the sharpness here, it punches through excellently in cocktails and is very good at pushing its flavors to the very tip of the spear. Quite simply excellent for cocktails, try a Wray & Ting with it at least once if you can.
Review by Montana
Vanilla, fruity, sweet, somewhat alcoholic. The taste is also fruity, only slightly alcoholic on the nose, already very mild for this percentage. The finish is also surprisingly mild and not too long.
Review by Steffmaus🇩🇰
Starting off Friday evening with this one. Maybe 3rd or 4th time tasting it, but this time documented. Tasting it neat, but I could see this in a cocktail. To me it has a very fresh and vegetal nose, and notes of tropical fruits, some spice and molasses

Review by Henry Davies
It’s a big bold unaged rum. The nose has huge sugar cane notes with strawberry and ester fumes that hint at what is to come, actually a really enticing nose if you are after that type of nose. On the mouth it is actually tamer than the ABV would suggest, with an intense mouth with some green artichoke and citrus elements. The finish fades with good length and is surprisingly spicy and salty. It’s actually not a terrible slow sipper if you are in the mood but a bit one dimensional and brash for me to score higher and I find it lacking as a mixed drink for anything other than as a float to a cocktail
Review by Noname971
Very good rum in spite of its titration to 63 of good fruity flavours come out of it. dry or in ti punch this rum really surprised me.

Review by Rhum Mirror 🇧🇪

Essential ingredient in my cocktail bar. An edgy exotic fruit slush; a lot of Jamaica for relatively little money. The rum forms a base for my own Falernum. I use the Overproof Rum and young brown rum (like Foursquare) in a ratio of 2:1 for this.Total 500ml rum, 500ml sugar syrup (1:1) and 120ml freshly squeezed lime juice.

You‘ll get here a good rum for a few euros. Nose: solvents, ester, funky, glue, red fruits, overripe fruits Mouth: funky, intense, floral, spicy, banana, pineapple, overripe fruits Finish: short, grass, vegetal, earthy, alcoholic

A staple to any decent home bar . Being a Jamaican fan boy this was my gateway to the beautiful island . I love it with ting , straight or even in a Zombie Nosing Deep acetone and bannana Tasting Oranges and bannana

A little burnt tire and some overripe banana. Roasted vanilla bean. Water white pour. Plenty of chile pepper on the finish. Light tar. Bottle I tried a hint of at a party, slightly breaking dry January a couple days early.
Review by zack goldberg
This is a rum I have had on my bar for a decent amount of time, I've mostly used it for creating my own falernum and it has worked great for that! But I have been doing more of a deep dive into rum itself I figured it deserved its own tasting. On the nose it's citrus and grass and that lovely Jamaican funk and with this being an unaged rum you defiantly get that nail polish remover which I don't hate to be perfectly honest with you. On the palete it's fruity, leaning towards the citrus end of the spectrum, orange is a player with pineapple there is an essence of sweetness there without it being sweet, like the sweetness when you take a bite of a perfect orange vs prosseced white cane sugar taste. Defiantly not my favorite finish, wasn't bad, wasn't great on here they said people have tasted mango on the finish and I didn't clock on to that until now! All and all a great rum, perfect for cocktails and making liqueurs probably not my prefferd sipping rum but it may be good with a sweet/savory meal

Pure alcohol taste
Review by RumCzar
This is my favorite unaged Jamaican overproof. It has the famous Jamaican funk without the same strong industrial chemical notes as Rumfire or rotten vegetable odor as Rum-Bar. I enjoy this neat and with lime. I will rebuy.
Review by Kayla Roy
Wow! What a rum! I have a strong bias towards funky rums and this is a great example. This rum is full of stewed floral fruits and complex sweetness. Very intense the first time I tried it, now I cannot get enough!
Review by thomas fraboulet
Overproof white Jamaican.
Review by Kenny Denruyter
Good for cocktails, made from molasses but is close to Agricole but with more roasted caramel notes. The fruity esters are less present than in the hampden marks. More neutral overproof.
