Alfred Lamb‘s Navy Rum

6.3/10 24 community reviews ↓

Pour this over ice or into cola and it does its job: molasses, caramel and coffee with a spicy, faintly bitter edge that reads like dark chocolate. At 40% it's an easy, sweetish everyday navy rum. One reviewer found it "too thin and weak for a navy rum," and a few note it tips slightly sweet — so set expectations before you sip it neat.

Tasted this navy rum at Irish Annie’s in Nerja, Spain. Alfred Lamb, the creator, is said to have blended 18 rums from Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad and Guyana in 1849 to create it. The bottle is hexagonal formed and the legend says it was because the bottle shouldn’t roll around at the ships. The nose and at the palate as well as during the relatively short finish is round, spicy, sweet, nutty and woody white aromas and flavors of caramel, coffee and molasses. Overall a little too thin and weak for a navy rum in my opinion probably because of low ABV.

Now a navy rum. Not bad at all, again a nice coffee and caramel note. I quite like the price-performance ratio. A sampled finish is also definitely recommended. Perhaps a little too sweet

Quite a strong smell of molasses, spicy, somewhat sweet. The taste is also spicy, slightly bitter, something like dark chocolate. The finish is medium long.

Historical evening with original period samples of rums from the 60's and 70's by Pavel Špaček 17.2.2025. A shipment of samples arrived from a collector from France can only surprise us. There are five of us for this, so we'll see.

... I bought a crate of 80 samples from France from one of the big rum promoters. All '70s and '70s. I don't expect anything but patois. But what the hell - you have to try everything. A priceless experience. And a lot more fun with five people. 2025-02-17

Expert review by The Fat Rum Pirate

If it's a Navy Rum then Pusser's, Wood's and Ancient Mariner all out rank Lamb's. Overall this isn't a bad tasting rum but it doesn't offer much beyond sweet flavours. There is no complexity like Pussers or El Dorado (even the 5-year-old offers more than Lamb's in terms of overall...
