Caroni fans hunting the classic tar-and-solvent bomb should know this one leans milder — several tasters found it fruity, with cherry, apple, banana and coconut up front and the rubber and tar pushed "weit im Hintergrund." A 1991 Velier bottling at 55%, tropically aged 19 years. Well-balanced, silky, even a touch sweet. Some loved it; others missed the dirty complexity and compared it to Foursquare.

#4217 19.08.2023 we had our yearly meeting among old friends. When we do this once a year its without partners, cellphones and other gadgets. Just some nice rums, a piece of paper and a pen and most fun of all, a blind tasting. The theme of 2023 was Caroni and we had a great time and spend no less then 10 hours talking and tasting. Now to the bottle. Pretty good Caroni and it was bought when released at a very good price. A fruity Caroni in my mind, but still with some rubber and tar. Wood and roasted/smoky notes were really well balanced as was the ABV. Draws really nice curtains in the glass and the empty glass has more smoke and some mint.

Vielen Dank an Pavel Spacek für das Sample. Blind hätte ich hier wohl auf einen tropisch gereiften Guyana-Column-Still getippt, das Profil ist sehr ähnlich. Die typischen Caroni-Marker sind sehr weit im Hintergrund. Alkohol ist wunderbar eingebunden. Sehr gefällig, aber es fehlt etwas an Komplexität.

Nose and taste much more like a foursquare than a caroni!I miss all the dirty side of tar mixed with solvents typical of caroni and that complexity in their taste!A real shame!I was a little disappointed!

... Caroni je destilerie z Trinidadu, produkujici v dobe sve nejvetsi slavy rum, ktery se pridaval v pomeru 1:10 do namornickeho blendu. Byl totiz moc vyrazny a divny nez aby byl prijemny na jazyku. V roce 2000 destilerka skoncila s produkci a byla uzavrena. Az v roce 2010 se objevili degustatori, kteri si rum oblibili prave pro jeho specialni chut. A zajem rostl. Caroni patri do kategorie rumu "you need to try before you die". Doporucuji, Caroni je opravdu unikatni rum.

Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: Pleasant to drink blended Caroni without the really big highlights. Sweet LTR notes of vanilla and caramel, plus the tart tar and spice notes of the HTR style. Pleasing, but not top class. Clearly behind the Full Proof release of the same year.
