Velier Caroni Trilogy Heavy Rum Trinidad Stock HTR 1996

Sip this one neat and give it time — a good hour of air, since at 70% it needs room. What comes out is pure Caroni: leather, tobacco, oily tar and that "gas station in the middle of a jungle" note tasters keep chasing. Mint runs through it, orange and light caramel soften the edges, and the finish holds for minutes. Heavy, powerful, and unusually well-integrated for the strength.

The community says

06.12.2025 Retasting and I still like it a lot. I love the mint notes in the profile. This was my final sample of the bottle I had and I have noticed that now I get some tar, caramel and light cherry notes. -------------- 14.03.2020 Had a nice afternoon and evening with friends. Notes. Medium dark to dark. Nose: wood, roasted, mint, fruity, orange, light caramel. Palate: oily, wood, light smoke, orange, rubber, leather. Finish: very long, warm, wood, earthy, citrus.

A rum I was lucky enough to taste blind, and I put my money on a Demerara blend, Caroni and a little Jamaica for liveliness. And so a British Navy flagon. A molasses nose with fruit and esters. Sweetness in contrast with a lively side, quite a lot of alcohol too. Old rope, prune, old wood and yellow fruit. On the palate, a gentle attack contrasts with a lively nose. Then the dark aromas take over, and only then does the liveliness reappear. Everything comes together on the finish, as if this rum had been blended to perfection. The finish is extremely long and heady, yet elegant and complex. This rum tells the story of an heir, a reveler and a depraved man. Now alone in his dilapidated chateau with some nice leftovers.

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing at the time of its greatest glory rum, which was added at a ratio of 1:10 to the naval blend. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000, the distillery ceased production and closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who took a liking to the rum because of its special taste. And the interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of "you need to try before you die" rums. I recommend it, Caroni is a truly unique rum.

Got the chance to cross taste the entire Trilogy set of Caroni 1996. One by one, exceptionally good Caroni’s The RX1472 stood out as the fruitiest on the nose. Leather and the typical Caroni notes also come to the fore. I therefore found this one the most delicious on the nose. The RX3901 had the woody notes from the barrel predominantly present on the nose. My number 3. With the RX5321, the woody barrel notes also came to the fore. But here, some tropical fruit also comes to the forefront. Slightly sweeter. My number 2 on the nose. On the palate, the RX1472 is truly deliciously fruity, with strawberries remarkably coming to the fore. Of the three, this one had the fruitiest character, which predominated. As a result, the typical Caroni notes were somewhat more in the background and came to the fore in the finish. On the palate, this is my number 1 or 2. It is exactly what I’m in the mood for with a Caroni today. For me, the RX3901 had the most woody and smoky notes combined with the typical Caroni notes on the palate. Slightly heavier and more complex. Something sweet and gluey also came through; the finish is slightly less intense and shorter than the RX1472. On the palate, this is my number 3. The RX 5321 is my favorite on the palate. The true Caroni notes come delightfully to the forefront. Leather, garage, tar, and so on. Really more bite. Probably also due to the alcohol percentage. Alternated with delicious fruity notes in the finish. This is how I like my Caroni best. The alcohol is highest in this one, but perfectly balanced. In terms of taste, this is my shared number 1 or 2 spot. But if I really had to choose, it would be number 1.

A great, complex Caroni that packs an incredible 70% punch. Lovely tea notes that lean slightly towards Demerara. A magnificent, expensive rum.

Second tasting from LMDW Trilogy. I find this cask #R3711 more balanced and complex than the cask #5541 and among the bests round Caroni I've ever tasted so far. Still missing a bit more complexity and fun to reach 90+ points like the Trespassers for example.

It's one of the most impressive Caroni I've met. Very pure, the distillery character is in the glass... I am in love 😍! The rum reveals itself after 1hr of breathing. It's heavy, the alcohol is super well integrated, a lot of natural sweetness, oily, some dried fruits and the amazing feeling of being in a gas station in the middle of a jungle... A masterpiece by Caroni ! This bottle is on its own the perfect definition of what Caroni means to rum.

No closed distillery is chased harder than Caroni. The Trinidad distillery shut down around 2002 and not a drop has been made since, but its heavy, oily, almost diesel-like rum became a collector obsession, carried to the world by Velier. Every bottle now comes from a finite, shrinking stock, which is exactly why the prices keep climbing.
