Hampden Pure Single Jamaican Rum Overproof
Most people love this one, though a few find it hot or too woody when sipped neat. It's the classic Hampden picture: overripe banana, pineapple, glue and solvent with dry oak and spice underneath. The 60% is surprisingly well hidden for most, though several add a few drops of water. A lot of tasters call it their first real step into Jamaican funk.

- Long finish
- But: Hot for some

Funky, fruity Jamaican with real punch A beloved gateway into high-ester Hampden. Big fruit, funk and heat that most find drinkable at 60%, though some say it turns woody or sharp neat and prefer it in a Mai Tai.

Delicious, absolutely a must have in my collection. This over proof is incredible in any funky mixed drink and a fantastic sipper as well. Drying but juicy, a little astringint, this rum can be an experience if one wants to just sit and contemplate the esters, the fruitiness, and the depth of complex tropical flavors in this rum.

It’s fantastic that it’s possible to buy a rum like this, matching the Veliers, to this quite low price. The nose is complex and full of aromas of esters, fruits and wood. At the palate it’s heavy, complex and funky with flavors full of esters and spices. The finish is long, elegant and subtle.

👃: Hyper funky, fruity, ripe banana, marzipan (almond), alcohol, light spice and some wood👄: Citrus, dry wood, yeast, alcoholic, fruity and Indian wood style spice. It's funky and complex⏳: Medium, red fruit and spice.

This is my reference at 83 points. I know it’s a strange number to have as a reference, but still its a great rum and it keeps the rest of the rums in check and have plenty to spare in the 80s and 90s above it. I use it to kind of reset my values for my other rums, but still my daily form fluctuate. - Had to go back to my reference and it’s a good practice… - Now with the new HLCF being so different I think I need to stock up with this good oldie - Yup, got me a couple more Bottles just to keep. - Strange, now compared the last of my old bottle to a recently opened one and the old has more rubber notes and the newly opened one is closer to the new HLCF Classic. - Some months since last time now and this time around A/B tested with a friends bottle and there is definitely differenceses between them. - Almost a year since last time above and it definitely has its place as a reference. However the difference between the bottles makes this less clear. I really like the Asphalt tone in the original bottle. 250701: - Long time since last tasting and I do have a problem with my old 8,3 points as I now think this is much better than that, especially with the not so common asphalt note. Not sure what to do about it and will have to keep it as is for now. 260109: - Not sure how to handle this now… I would love to lift it to 8.5, but having it as a refence makes it impossible and moving all the other rums according to it would be impossible. I guess taste varies over longer time periods too and not just day to day.

A really good Jamaican style rum with a real punch. I'd say most may need a few drops of water to make it a lot more digestible. Rest for 15-20 minutes for all flavours to be released. Has more bang for your buck than the 92 proof version.

Nice rum! Very pronounced toastiness! It drinks very well!
Review by cigares
A fantastic nose of rum raisins, like Jamaican ice cream (and with good reason). But also tropical fruits, especially banana and a little pineapple, and measured esters. On the palate, the ABV is discreet but supports the aromas. There are tamed esters and plenty of fruit, but also spice and roast. The finish is long and after a first glass I'm quite enthusiastic about this affordable Hampden. But after a second and especially a third glass, the aromas start to bore me and I imagine this rum should be reserved for mixology rather than pure tasting. Hence my much lower score than I'd imagined. Nevertheless, an excellent price/quality ratio.

Review by Giorgio Garotti
Review by crazyforgoodbooze
pure he is actually a bit too roasty and mocha / coffee with metallic notes. the banana and esters etc. are there but rather in the background... but overall almost unbelievably drinkable for 60% and nicely balanced!in the Mai Tai again, exactly that is reversed banana / caramel and light mocha associations very round and drinkable with enough complexity to take some time for the drink. good PLV and definitely better than the 46%! (who is also surprised?😜)
Review by DomM
More emphasis on fruity and funky notes with the higher ABV. However, nose is much more „closed up“ and needs a very long time in the glas to open up compared to the lower ABV bottling. All in all both seem legit choices😅
Review by Frank
Finally I get around to this one. Bottle is already almost empty. The is namely really good and had an unbeatable PLV.nose: intense and full-bodied. Fruity-caramel. Has a lot of papaya and mealy banana with some black currant. Adds tart caramel with vanilla and some cold pipe tobacco at the back. Almost seems a bit floral-perfumed.Palate: powerful and really tasty. Slightly bitter, with a slightly salty umami note. But then also immediately fruity towards orange peel, banana peel and papaya. Light caramel and strongly pulling in the direction of licorice. Also has something of chewing tobacco. In the finish again licorice, green tea and tropical fruit.A good increase by 46%igem. And that's already really nice.

One hell of a Jamaican slap 🤪
Review by Lukas Jäger
My entry into the higher ester world and thus for me somehow a flagship for Hampden (although rather emotional and as a blend of course difficult to compare with some other bottlings). With good PLV and a lot of flavors, it is suitable for beginners, but also for advanced rum drinkers. In my eyes, clearly stronger than its diluted brother.
Review by Tim

Tasting notes: Lots of power, tropical fruit and candied lemon.
Review by Rodolphe
A very good and powerful Jamaican at a good price. Less easy and less funky than its smaller brother. A tiny touch of water brings out the pastry and fruity sides even more.
Review by HenryL
Somewhat more floral and less sweet than the Great House 2020. Also woodier, spicier and somewhat less complex. In a direct comparison, the Great House clearly has the nose in front, but whether it is worth the extra cost to me...Compared to the successor, the HLCF Classic clearly woody-spicy.
Review by Arnaud Faverjon
Very nice but I prefer the new HLCF Classic.
Review by zabo
I've tried it again now after a good year and have to say that I remembered it better, so I'm downgrading it to one point because I think it's good, but not very good. But I also see this rum more in the mixer corner for cocktails and long drinks.
Review by Basti
The tropical maturation is clearly recognizable here, both visually and sensorially. In addition to citrus fruits, pineapple, subtle notes of glue and varnish, spices and wood are also quite present here. PLV is excellent here!
Review by Sebastian Kornett
In the nose like its little brother. Flavor more bang, which is due to the higher alcohol. Very nice roast flavors with decent funk and with a slightly underlining sweetness. Is for me clearly better than his little brother. I love this rum. Tasty Jamaican. I can drink it every day. A total of 7 bottles of it secured for now. Let's see if there are more. ;)

Mein erster Rum in Fassstärke, mein erster Hampden. Der Haut einen echt aus den Socken. Intensiv, irre viel Frucht, etwas Lösungsmittel, typischer Jamaikaner eben, die 60% sind verdammt gut versteckt. Was für ein tolles Zeug.
Review by Rene Pfeiffer
Weniger fruchtig in Richtung Ananas, hamden-typisch, eher in Richtung Banane.
Review by Christian Rudt
Beautiful bottling of Hampden which comes despite Overproof very round. A bit goes the funky on the palate but overall a great representative but not overwhelmed.

For a release price of less than 80€ it does its job. 8/10
Review by Joachim Guger
My first Hampden that tastes halfway to me.😉Vegetable fruit, vinegar, esters, but very warm and easy to drink. Great PLV.
Review by RumTaTa

This rum is like a Rorschach test for your development as a rum nerd. At earliest stages you will be overwhelmed by the sheer power of it and be convinced it’s great. Then you will convince yourself it has the best price to quality in the business, buying yet more. Finally, upon tasting many Hampdens you will agree that it’s a decent value for the low to mid-range but can’t hold a candle to the higher end expressions from this distillery. At which point you will consign it to the cocktail shelf, but still and despite yourself, you will occasionally glance over to it with a wistful look in your eye that mutters “I know better know, but I still love you”.

My first "good rum" I bought (and bought again and again). He was for me the entry and I drink him until today with pleasure. Pure or as a secret weapon in cocktails. As a sipper, I prefer it to the HLCF Classic successor. Even if they are not comparable. Looking forward to the next bottle.
Review by Rhum Mirror 🇧🇪
The nose is quite alcoholic, but the fruity (coconut-banana) bulges out of it. We find vanilla, wood and spices. We are in Jamaica but blindly it is difficult to say that we are at the illustrious Hampden. In the mouth we are far from the finesse, the greediness of Plantation Jamaica 2003, it is explosive with a balance in alcohol not optimal. It is rather dry, we have the impression to be on an older Jamaican rum having a little too much wood. Fortunately, after a few sips, vanilla and tropical fruits soften the mouth. The finish is quite dry
Review by Timo Groeger
Finally the good rum :-) Here we have a very nice Hampden. The nose and palate have a great smell and taste of tropical fruit and a little ester. You can hardly taste the 60% at all. Top.
Review by Vincent D
The Hampden 8 year old reduced to a super-boosted version. I found almost all the markers of it, the woodiness in more, with a more important sweetness and a finish in which a sensation of leather appears behind the spiciness.Very nice
Review by Rare Akuma
Very fruity on the nose with light medicinal touches, suggesting a low ester marque. The first sip is immediately very oaky and swarming with spices. Pepper and vanilla up front, black licorice candy in the back. The mid palate releases the same fruits discovered during nosing with some new exotic fruits popping up. When the oakiness dies down, it all becomes very “breakfasty” like marmalade on toast. And eventually it’s all rounded off with a touch of solvents and a small knob of freshly cut ginger. The wood is a little too present before the spicy counterbalance kicks in, but all in all it’s a very nice rum.
Review by Gregor
Who likes ester should definitely access here. A very nice long rum. The price is very fair. A great experience and highly recommended for friends of unsweetened rums
Review by rum_sk
Very faint on the nose in comparison with regular 8 YO which is a surprise. Less minty or let's say 0 traces of mint but more prominent on the ,,lacquer/solvent,, & overripe fruit side. Also you can sense the fruity notes much more than regular 8 YO. However, I like the regular 8 YO nose more than this overproof mainly because I am missing the mint. Taste: Punch to the face :P but full of taste. Much more wood and sort of heavy on the overripe fruity notes in comparison with regular 8 YO. BUT I still like the regular more. I am missing the mint on the 👃 which is crucial for me. When it comes to the taste I think that the overproof is doing better job as the regular now seems too diluted when comparing side by side.

The little brother 46% was my ticket to the fascinating HD world. Accordingly, I was excited to pick up the big brother a few years later. He can of course everything that can the small and a little more. However, I find him pure slightly sharp on the tongue. Only with a few drops of water he unfolds its full potential (am usually not a friend of diluting). Therefore, the same score as the brother, but the big wins of course the price performance duel.
Review by Portman
Really excellent, funky Jamaican with overripe fruit, pineapple, banana, berries, subtly astringent and intrinsic sweetness. Top price, Hampden in top form.

Read full review →At 60% ABV it should satisfy anyone's desire for "Cask Strength" rum. Also at £80 it is priced competitively alongside the Indie bottlings. I would certainly recommend picking up a bottle of this, instead of perhaps chucking £150 at a 20 year plus independent bottling. It makes a belting rum...
