Saint James Pure Rum 88 British Proof 1944
"Liquid history" is what keeps coming up, and it fits — this is a 1944 Saint James, cane-juice column still, and it drinks nothing like a modern agricole. The nose runs floral and perfumed: lavender, jasmine, citrus like mandarin and lime. On the palate wood carries right through, with cinnamon, blackberry, dark chocolate and a whisper of leather. One catch several note: the finish falls a bit short.

This bottle will be emptied tonight and I already had the first glass and barely one more left in the bottle. I can't find a better occasion for finishing this rum than the slide into 2022. This is also a bottle that was released in my birth year so I know I'm old :-) At least I can add some extra information compared to my old notes. This being a very old vintage rum it is so very different in the flavor profile compared to the releases in the past decades. There is wood from nose to finish. Then there is the typical grass note mixed with spice and fruit. There is also a hint of leather in the profile. I like the spicy tunge on the palate. A very good old rum that didn't come cheap when I bought it in the late 80's
