Bristol Port Mourant Demerara 1999
One taster called this "einer meiner Favoriten" among the old Bristol Port Mourants, and it shows: spicy wood up front, then dried fruit, anise and licorice, with a late mandarin-orange sweetness a few people flag. The classic PM profile — pepper, allspice, a touch of chocolate. The one real gripe: at 46% it's reduced, so the body and finish feel a little light for the wood behind it.

Nez pas très expressif pour moi. C'est boisé, pas de doute. Quelques épices douces et de fruits secs (figue ?). En bouche, la réduction apparaît encore plus et ne laisse pas beaucoup de choses. Du bois, de l'anis ou de la réglisse, des fruits secs toujours. Gagne en peps a l'aération. Finale assez courte. Ni mauvais, ni bon. Sans grand intérêt à mon sens.

01.05.2020 Only have notes on this one. Nose: wood, roasted, licorice, dried fruit, fresh, cherry. Palate: oily, wood, roasted, raisin, anise, chocolate. Finish: long, plum, licorice, chocolate, wood. Medium dry.

Looking at the set of Bristol‘s 99 PM bottlings from 11y to 23y: On the nose all bottlings come with a good intensity despite the reduced ABV. All are transporting classic PM notes, showcasing the profile at different points in time. Particularly the 11y was a positive surprise compared to some 2010ish younger continental PMs. The sweetspot for me comes with the 15y - display a nice balance of cask notes (including dried fruits) and some lifeliness. 16y comes with a noticeable smokey note. At 23y both bottlings show a bit too much wood on the nose, somewhat closing the profile up instead of enhancing it significantly. On the palate all six bottlings show a decent amount of sweetness (candied herbs) even up to the 23y bottlings. For the latter two, wood and herbal notes clearly take over, taking the lifeliness of the younger bottlings. Those are nice and mature, but again I‘m feeling the sweetspot at the 15y mark here. The 15y adds dried fruits versus the 16y delivering some smoke - similar to the nose. The low ABV isn’t what I would have wished for. However, intensity is decent - only the finish seems to lose quite a bit. Cheers to Johannes for curating this set :)

Im Test ein paar Bristol Port Mourant aus dem Jahr 1999, der RX3898 (11yr), der RX21891 (23yr), der RX506 (15yr) und der RX5733 (16yr). Was alle verbindet ist, dass sie alle relativ runterreduziert sind und ihnen damit ein wenig Kraft fehlt. Aber durchweg solide, aber leider nicht 100% überzeugend. Vom Ranking her, hat mir der 15yr am besten gefallen. Der 23yr auf Platz 2, gefolgt vom 11yr und 16yr.

Bristol PM Crosstasting #3: wieder etwas älter und wieder einen Ticken besser. Jetzt hat man bereits in der Nase dunklere Aromen (Schokolade, Gewürze, Holz). Im Gaumen jetzt eher kandierte als Karamellig. Intensiverer Abgang als seine Vorgänger.

A highlight among the 1999 Port Mourants. Great fruit aromas, both fresh and dried, plus the typical PM profile with a tart spiciness characterized by allspice, pepper, aniseed, liquorice and light coffee nuances. Balanced, expressive, a very good rum with a rounded aroma spectrum.

Bristol Port Mourant 99 vertical, interestingly the nose is rather straightforward, spicy wood and some dried fruits, but in the palate this really explodes in your face, loads of wood aromas and spice of anis. Powerhouse for cheap money
