Beenleigh S.B.S Australia 2007

"Not the best from Australia, unfortunately," is one member's honest take, and the room really splits here. The nose wins people over — green apple, mandarin, grape, a floral tinge and a whiff of nail-polish chemistry. The palate is where it stumbles: fruity but thinner, some toffee and caramel, dark chocolate and a smoky, slightly acrid finish. The 55% ABV reads hotter than the number suggests.

The community says
  • Complex floral nose
  • Green apple, mandarin
  • Alcohol too forward

How does Beenleigh S.B.S Australia 2007 taste?

Aggregated from 28 community reviews.

Interesting nose, thin hot palate Divisive. A few love its complex, floral-fruity nose and smoky finish; others find it thin, whisky-like and too alcoholic, with the palate not living up to the aromas.

Perfect for

Curious drinkers who prize an unusual nose over a polished palate

Less suitable for

Anyone wanting rich, sweet, easy-sipping rum or bothered by hot alcohol

Takes some time to develop, from chemical to more fruity and floral.Taste reminiscent of whiskey and less of rum. Not particularly refined, alcohol is too overpowering for me.I would not buy a bottle of it.

Just finished a nice evening going through some of the samples we got from 1423. Loved the smoky finish on this bottle.

Very nice complex rum with a lot of personality without being crazy or gimmicky. Just pure class. Some floral tinge to the nose and palate and lots of fruit without going tropical. A dark chocolaty late palate and slight smoky aftertaste. ABV in the upper range of what is comfortably.

This is a first expression of a aged Australian rum form a decent producer. Notice the word decent producer as I hate bunderberg, Josh at 1423 is an amazing man ... Now onto the rum Grassy notes of ripe figs and nail polish . Add a drop of water to taste that harshness away and open it up ... .

Beenleigh has been a bit hit or miss. They make a fine spirit, but they can't compete with most other craft distilleries in terms of complexity and depth. This one is bold in smell but lacks in taste. It's alcoholic but also a biy thin in someways. Definitely not the best I had. I'm gonna give this a retry in a few days. Better second try. More floral. Acidic. Even some funk/pineapple. Better!

To the nose it is frankly atypical, one dives into it and dives back to deconstruct it so much it is surprising. It is a mixture of fresh fruits (Granny Smith, lemon, tangerine ...), a bouquet of flowers and the sample library of a chemistry laboratory (nail polish and synthesis of drugs). It is very interesting and we can't wait to taste it. The attack in mouth is fruity but rather disappointing because not enough aromatic for my taste. We find caramel, marmalade and spices. The finish is more present and vigorous on dark chocolate and burnt-smoked wood.

2nd day Christmas calendar, blind! Was not easy, could have been Belize, but then reminded me of the Australians.Nose: fresh, but also alcoholic. In the fruit somewhat restrained towards tangerine, grape, raspberry. Slightly spicy with vanilla. Out the back a bit woody and smoky. There is still something floral, green apple and some chocolate over.Palate: spicy, reminds me of pomace. A bit fruity, anise and vanilla. Towards toffee and caramel. A slight citrus note, slightly bitter and some chocolate. If fruit, then maybe date.Quite ok.
