Bielle Goélette Élevé sous voile 2011

Blind, a few tasters swore this was a Martinique rhum, not a Marie-Galante Bielle — more polished and woody than the distillery's usual bright funk. Apricot and peach lead, with vanilla, fresh sugarcane and a touch of varnish, then oak and pepper on a long finish. At 54% the alcohol sits well-integrated, and a couple of drops of water bring out biscuit dough. Rounded, mineral, easy to like.

A very fresh nose. Camphor, glue, polish, then with a little breathing it becomes less. Fresh fruit (citrus, apricot and especially peach can be detected). Some oak. Crisp and complex. A few drops of water bring out cookie dough and macaroons. In the mouth then very crisp, keeps changing until swallowed. The finish is very nice and long.A very good complex Bielle, the typical fruitiness and the typical licorice are withdrawn. In return there is a pronounced minerality and freshness.

I like Bielle and this one is up there with the best of them. The nose is well balanced and woody with fruit and varnish from the start closely followed by nuts, vanilla and some sugarcane. The palate round and balanced fruits and spices first then nutty oak and a hint of honey. A nice palate and a must for Bielle fans. The finish is medium long to long with oak, raisin and a bit of vanilla. Price to quality is very good.

Very good drop. The first nose wasn't bad. But if you give it a little time, it develops and gets even better. Overall, it is very balanced and round with very well integrated alcohol. Makes you want more. Which makes it a mild contemporary with a desire for more

The nose is rich, rounded with hints of both spice and fruit, floral and vanilla. On the palate it is lively, toasty, with red fruits and floral On the lingering finish, slightly woody, but also aromatic, reminding me of violets. Really good despite being relatively young

Not quite as impressive as the RX6777 tasted at the same time, a little sharper and with a perceived (!) sherry finish, but also a great choice. Thank you, Leo, for the blind sample for the RumX Christmas Secret Santa on 21.12.2023!

Marie Galante is a small round island off Guadeloupe that punches far above its size in rum. Known as the island of a hundred windmills, it makes powerful, high-proof agricole, often bottled at 59 percent and up, from three working distilleries. For agricole lovers it is one of the most characterful corners of the French rum world.
