Cadenhead‘s Caribbean Rum 1842
Most tasters land on "well-crafted but basic," and a few think it's better than that. It reads dark and Guyana-leaning — raisin, molasses, plum and baking spices, with a metallic, minty edge some love and one member marks down as "off notes (metallic, industrial)." At 56.6% it drinks warm but oddly thin. A comfortable daily sipper more than a showpiece.

Warm, raisin-heavy Demerara-style daily sipper Well-liked as an easy, warming everyday pour, though several call it thin for the proof and one flags sharp metallic notes. A couple taste a touch of added sweetness.

8,1:On the nose, dried fruits like raisins, apricots and bananas, red fruits with cherries, mineral and minty molasses, metallic patina, solvents, sweet roasted wood notes with caramelized burnt sugar, spicy, some dirty undertones, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, citrus fruits arise, smokiness and roastedness with nuts, espresso and chocolate. 8,4:On the palate, the attack is metallic with copper, slightly synthetic, sweet, buttery and oily with roasted wood notes like chocolate, confectionery with cookie dough, meringue, caramelized burnt sugar, spicy with baking spices, fruity with dried and tropical fruits like banana, raisins, a bit later with pears. 8,3:The finish is rather long, dry, the molasses is thick, caramelized, sweet with honey, pairing dried fruits and roasted wood notes, spicy. Edit:7.2.26

Brought down by a sharp mouthfeel and more than few off notes (metallic, industrial)

16.04.2025 retasting with Fabian and I still like it a lot. ------------------ #4997 24.12.2024 Enjoying a sample I got from a good friend. Nose Sweet, intense, metallic, light mint, light cherry, spice, dried fruit, wood, light smoke. Palate Round, oily, warm, medium spicy, dried fruit, light mint, naturally sweet, faint chocolate, light plum, wood, light roasted, faint smoke. Finish Long and warm, medium spicy, naturally sweet, dried fruit, light chocolate, spice, oily, wood, The empty glass has nice caramel, light herbs and prunes. Needs to rest to really open up. Surprisingly good rum considering the price tag.

If I'm being critical at the very beginning, at 56.6 ABV, it's tastes very thin. It's smell pleasant, sweet, of dried fruit, raisins, molasses, vanilla and baking spices. Sweetness, dried fruit, raisins, vanilla, baking spices appears in the taste. Alcohol is integrated well. The aftertaste is medium long. Overall, it's well-crafted basic blended rum. My batch was bottled on November 5, 2018

Read full review →I think this rum is pretty spectacular and until I find something better I'm pretty happy to give this 5 stars. I suspect you could spend a lot, lot more and not find a better Demerara. Yes I know this isn't a Single Cask offering but taken at face value...
