Prunes, dark chocolate and a whiff of anise, over a soft caramel-and-vanilla sweetness that comes from the oak, not sugar. This is an unusually gentle Caroni — several tasters note the tar, petrol and rubber are mostly absent, replaced by berry fruit and florals. It needs time in the glass to open. At 61.7% the alcohol isn't always fully tucked in.

29.01.2022 The big Caroni tasting with old rum buddies, good food, snacks and a lot of talking about old times. Notes Medium dark to dark in colour. Nose Wood, light roasted, spice, light caramel, plum, faint anise. Palate Well rounded, naturally sweet, wood, light roasted, plum, raisin, light chocolate, light mint. Finish Medium to long, naturally sweet, wood, light smoke, mint, roasted, faint licorice.

Quite vanilla bourbon, not dirty but very accessible in the profile and on the Caroni spectrum. Clearly the victor compared directly to The Duchess 1991 Nautilus.

a real flash on the nose. Very complex and an amazing range of different flavors. It takes a while breathing in the glass before it opens up. Then there is a complexity of herbal, roast and wood aromas with a decent hint of dried fruits. Licorice is the only flavor I can spot that keeps up with the Coroni myth. It doesn’t held the promise on the palate. But of course it’s still a complex rum. Dried fruits, fennel and Eucalyptus, malt, roast aromas. And a subtle sweetness. I wonder if it might reach a higher level with a bit of sugar. Don’t kill me, but like salt in the kitchen sugar helps pushing the flavors. Have a look at the old Zacapas.

Sweet and full Caroni. Forget extra technical taste. ... Caroni je destilerie z Trinidadu, produkujici v dobe sve nejvetsi slavy rum, ktery se pridaval v pomeru 1:10 do namornickeho blendu. Byl totiz moc vyrazny a divny nez aby byl prijemny na jazyku. V roce 2000 destilerka skoncila s produkci a byla uzavrena. Az v roce 2010 se objevili degustatori, kteri si rum oblibili prave pro jeho specialni chut. A zajem rostl. Caroni patri do kategorie rumu "you need to try before you die". Doporucuji, Caroni je opravdu unikatni rum.

The Trinidad distillery shut down around 2002 and not a drop has been made since, but its heavy, oily, almost diesel-like rum became a collector obsession, carried to the world by Velier. Every bottle now comes from a finite, shrinking stock, which is exactly why the prices keep climbing.
