Today, Port Mourants has been around for what feels like an eternity. El Dorado 1997: Delicious Port Mourant with the typical aroma profile. Very pleasing, alcohol perfectly integrated, very drinkable. It lacks a little complexity. 85 pts. El Dorado 1999: A little more closed than its brother from 1997, the alcohol is not as well integrated. I had hoped for more here. 80 pts. Tamosi Karaya 1998: Great stuff! With the typical Port Mourant aromas that take root in its complexity and expand aroma-wise. The mouthfeel is full-bodied and pleasant, the alcohol is excellently integrated. 90pts.

26.10.2025 Part 1 Today we have an El Dorado Rare Cask online tasting and I've been looking forward to it. I will keep the score and just enjoy the rums and I have all of them on my shelves as well. ---------------- Leave this one in the glass for a while, then warm up your taste buds with a sip and wait for a short while before diving in. A true masterpiece they made here. It does have a little bite that warms, but it does so in a good way.

Very dark, spicy, smoky, roasted, vegetal, citrus fruits, brown sugar, licorice. Very distinctive, but a rounding component like vanilla and caramel is unfortunately only present to a minor degree. On the palate, it continues similarly with lots of bitter, vegetal, and woody notes. Also unfortunately a bit alcoholic. For me, Port Mourant doesn’t quite belong among the ED Rare Cask champions. But lovers of these kinds of aromas will surely find an excellent rum here. Compared to the ED PM 97, it’s less woody/dark on the nose, also a bit unbalanced on the palate, but very intense.

Looking at the previous reviews, this is a controversial rum. I didn't really like the 1997 brother because of an unpleasant acidity. This one may be the slightly simpler of the two El Dorado Port Mourants, but for me it's clearly the better rum. Up front: a little oxidation does it good. A few minutes or even hours in the glass is no harm to let some aggressive alcohol evaporate here. The nose is a typical, mature Port Mourant: aniseed and wet cardboard, wet wood. Plus rubber, Kalamata olives, dried fruit, very ripe banana, heavily roasted coffee. Everything is very harmonious. I could smell it for hours. The mouth is a little weaker, but I don't find the raging alcohol that others have described. I find the alcohol integration perfectly fine. The profile is similar and bone dry. Aniseed, old and wet wood, some brine, the roasted coffee again, plus leather and licorice. The finish is long and surprisingly smooth with leather, licorice, soft tannins and lots of dark spices: anise, cloves. I think this is a super PM! I wouldn't buy it for 250€. The 140€ I paid is excellent value for money

Second, slightly younger El Dorado Rare PM for today.Nose: with a little time, the high ABV is well tamed. Now I have a full-bodied, intense but at the same time balanced PM in the glass. Powerfully spicy-woody and aromatically fruity-roasty. Vanilla and nutmeg stand alongside orange peel and dried currant. Seems charred, almost burnt, but that doesn't bother at all. There is also strong sweetness from maple sap and burnt sugar. 88Palate: again strong and intense, salty-bitter and dry at first, then warm and creamy, with licorice, vanilla and nutmeg. Plus fat pecans with a slight umami impact. Seems strongly toasted. The so typical orange peel comes in at the back. The bitter start is a bit too heavy, but then a very nice, mature PM. 88

Compared to the Prelude we just tasted in the RumX Advent calendar, this one is not quite as round and the alcohol is less well integrated. Unfortunately, I have to admit that this is the one that appealed to me the least of all, but that is generally "complaining on a high level" with these bottlings

I drank it 3 times. I let it sit in the glass, but even that didn't change my tastes. The smell is nice - polish, wood, dried fruit, anise, cinnamon The problem is the taste. I was extremely bothered by the alcohol there and it scratched my throat a lot. I will definitely go back and try this rum again and hopefully revise my rating.

Un Port Mourant rustique, authentique et pourtant d’une grande élégance. Le nez, assez vif, dévoile des fragrances florales et herbacées qui se complètent bien avec les épices (vanille, réglisse, anis, poivre) le chêne et les notes sombres sur le cacao, le cuir et le mélasse lourde de Demerara. Les notes de vernissage du bois sont très délicates et ajoutent un brin de complexité exaltant. L’attaque en bouche est vive. Le côté rustique de Port Mourant ressort avec des notes amères de boisé humide, de tabac, de cuir, de café, de cacao, de réglisse et d’anis. Les notes sombres de mélasse et de caramel cuit se complètent avec les fruits secs et exotiques pour donner un peu de rondeur. L’alcool est bien intégré dans l’ensemble. La finale est longue, chaude et pimentée, sur cette même trame boisée, amère et torréfiée, lourde et sombre. Les copeaux de crayon et les épices assèchent le palais, tandis que les notes fruitées donnent un peu de souplesse à ce profil très concentré. Un superbe représentant de Port Mourant, étonnamment disponible et accessible.

Intensiv und fordernd - das Release bietet das herbe Port Mourant Profil mit nahezu allen Ecken und Kanten an. Nasses Holz, Lakritz, Mineralik, Kräuter, dunkle Gewürze und Röstnoten - hier gibt es aromatisch schon sehr viel aufs Tableau. Für PM-Puristen ein Vergnügen.

Class Port Mourant - El Dorado. The barrel and wood are mainly recognizable on the nose. On the palate it has a dark taste. The wood comes through here, also very spicy and still dry and strong. Superb.

8,8:On the nose, we have a strong barrel impact with dried fruits like raisins, roasted wood notes like nuts, cocoa, mocha and spices like cinnamon, the molasses is grassy.Banana and orange peel join the fruit list.We notice some polish. On aeration, plum is obvious, some anise and Demerara sugar, pastry. 8,6:On the palate, the attack is quite spicy, the wood is roasted with caramelized notes, leather, chocolate, coffee, the molasses is grassy, herbaceous, slightly musty and with black tea, goes even darker with licorice. The fruits are dried, citrus and tropical. 8,7:The finish is balanced, dry and tannic, the molasses is grassy, brings tobacco and pencil shavings, the wood is roasted with variety of notes, caramelized, pairing banana.. Colour: chestnut Nose: after pouring: nail polish remover, acetone, overripe banana, caramelised apple, olives in brine, damp earth, tobacco leaf and black tea, moist wood. Actually very pleasant. After aeration: still some esters, but now leaning more towards varnish. More pencil shavings and quite a bit of wood, both dry and lacquered. Some apple sauce remains. There's more of a liquorice note now, black olive, and dark tea. Taste: After pouring: syrupy, maybe a bit hot, but all well-behaved. Still some high esters like glue stick and overripe banana. Then the "sweet associated" style kicks in: molasses, even some PX-like sherry note of raisin, tarte tatin, coffee, salted almond and quite some tropical oak. Gets increasingly spicy with peppercorn, ginger, clove. After aeration: the hotness has mostly vanished, alcohol is well integrated. There's a slight sour and tannic undertone beneath what is otherwise mostly syrupy and rounded. Compared to a few minutes ago, there's more honey and peach syrup. Finish: After pouring: rather long and drying, leaving more of the roasted and spicy side. A continuation of the spices and wood from the end palate, plus quite some overinfused high quality black tea (which I like). There's some room for softer tropical fruits like peach and mango. After aeration: long and pleasant. The tannic side has mellowed down, making this a perfect drop.

The nose is a bruiser, barrel, some rough rhum Agricole notes, and a backbone or brown sugar. It’s not the most appetising but makes me curious. The mouth takes time to unwind so give it a bit in the glass. I actually find it soft and drinks under its ABV. Main notes are Iicorice and barrel influence, with a salty brine that flows over and makes it presence known. The finish is a tad metallic, with iodine and vanilla and notes of anise. It’s long, draw out and reminiscent of old libraries. Not one of the better ED Rare Collection rums for my taste

Must breathe a little. Naturally very powerful, very spicy, some dried fruit. Complex, alcohol integration very good. A few drops of water bring out pencil. Port Mourant is typically pronounced recognizable.In the mouth then more caramel, of course a lot of oak and massive spices.Great, long finish. Overall, very successful wood maturity!I am now not so the Port Mourant fan, but this one pleased me very much. A powerful, tart, very masculine aroma.

This tropically aged Port Mourant is much rounder compared to those aged on the continent. The sweetness comes from coconut or caramel notes which clearly help balance the profile. Since I'm not a big fan of PM, I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised. There's still a gap compared to the dark old PMs, which are my favorites, but this is definitely a good rum!

Good El Dorado with the classic PM profile of the late 90s. Certainly not the top of the Rare Cask series, but like the vast majority of the range, solid and good. Full-bodied, dark and roasty, orange peel meets prune and aniseed. Just a little brisk in the finish, otherwise I would probably give it a few more points!

Having emptied most of the bottle I feel ready to contribute my opinion about this one. Phenomenal. The complexity is a little hidden, you need to have your taste buds a little prepared for this type of strong juice and, as the English used to say, "unapologetic". We're dealing with a pure, powerful, and perhaps divisive demerara, as this rum will tell you whether you're a real fan of the style or not. In my case, my god, how divine it is. If you can find it for 160€ or less, go for it. At more than 240€, turn to the best Nobilis expressions, where similar quality can still be found for around 170€. If you're not a Guyana aficionado, give it time to develop on your palate! Don't settle for your 3 cl sample. This is the shining example of where the "sample warriors" in this community will miss out on the quality of this bottle.

It tastes quite intense to me. Basically, for a rounder taste, I think it needs to stand for a while. At the beginning, the aromas are difficult to identify or perceive, so it tastes almost a little too jumbled and dark for me. Not for every evening but still interesting.

perhaps not quite on the level of the 97 PM from the ED Rare Collection, but still a very good PM. To soften the alcoholic sharpness (esp. on the palate) I found a few drops of water quite helpful. This PM, like many from the ED Rare Collection, is still available at absolutely fair prices.

Ich bin bisher nicht der größte PM Fan, aber die Abfüllung weiß zu gefallen. Neben Kräutern finde ich hier auch einiges an Gewürzen, Leder, röstige Aromen, Karamell. Am Gaumen kommt etwas Lack dazu, Tabak, Holz und eine leichte Bitterkeit. Gefällt mir in Summe sehr gut und deutlich besser als der parallel verkostete Distilia Bellamy.

Superb full-bodied flavour full of congener, anise, leather, liquorice, strong woodiness. Beautiful result of distillation on a wooden potstill still. The price/performance ratio is awesome for a Guyana this full-bodied. The finish leaves me with dried fruit and dry woodiness on the palate.

Pretty new to Port Mourant rums, so take this review with gain of salt. On the nose: Pretty strong nail polish notes upfront so i let this rum sit in the glass. Nail polish botes mellow down and you get strong woody, barrel notes with spices. The alcohol could be integrated better. Taste: Woody, licorice, anise. Quite alcoholic. Orange peel. Once you work over the alcoholic phave you get chocolate, coffee notes and afsin those orange peel notes. Finish: Woody, leather, tobacco, coffee. Warm and roasted mouthfeel. I get some anise and tea notes at the end. Long finish Mixed feelings about this one. The nail polish nosing and the quite alcoholic taste without big bag flavours upfront didn't impress me, but this rum really opens up in towards the end and in the finish for me. Taste profiles takes some time to get used to, but it gets better the more you sip it. Not really for me, but i can see why so many people seem to enjoy this.

Noch ein El Dorado der Rare Collection, den uns Serge freundlicherweise zum Leeren vorsetzte. Und schon wieder bestätigt sich mein Eindruck, dass man bei keiner Abfüllung der Rare Collection daneben greifen kann (wobei ich den 1993 EHP noch nicht im Glas hatte). An der Nase Orangenschale und Pflaume, gepaart mit Zimt, Mokka und Holz. Am Gaumen kommen Lakritze, Leder und etwas Anis dazu. Herrlicher Abgang auf der würzig-rostigen Seite, Holz, Leder, Tabak, Kaffee…

Braucht viel Zeit damit der Alkohol nicht all zu sehr stört. Wenig Fruchtnoten oder Süße. Viel Holz, Kräuter, Lakritz und Anis. Wirkt etwas unausgewogen, aber die Bitternoten sind für mich noch im Rahmen. Ist auf jeden Fall kein schlechter PM, aber es gibt harmonischere.

Schnell verkostet , guter PM, Profil ist da, schöne Nase mit viel trockener Frucht, leichte Kräuternoten leicht frisch, am Gaumen und im Abgang, würzig , holzig, leicht fruchtig mit einem leichten Hauch von Bourbonwhiskey, nett. Zweites Mal verkostet, beim ersten Mal war etwas Zeitdruck da. Gefällt viel besser , wenn man ihm im Glas Zeit gibt. Anis, Lakritz, Casiss , Tabak, Leder, Kaffee, leichte Veilchennote, trocken , holzig, würzig , intensive Tannine aus dem Fass, schöne nicht überlagerte Bourbonnote, sehr schön. Korrigiere meine Bewertung nach oben.

The nose is carried on earthy-herbaceous notes. And we find licorice and anise. But not only that, we also find raisins, wood and leather. The nose is clearly below the 1997, but it is complex and interesting. In the mouth, it is intense, even a little too much. It is not perfectly balanced and a bit alcoholic. We find an astringency or even a bitterness a bit disturbing due to this predominance of wood. But fortunately some tropical fruits allow to soften it. The finish is warm and rather dry on the woody aniseed.

Nose: Heavy acetone. Taste: dominant alcohol first on the tongue. Percentages evaporate slowly, but it takes just 15-20 seconds for the nuances to emerge. The alcohol is very overpowering. I miss balance. A touch of water actually opened it up a bit.

Quite a PM soap attack but well sauced with roasted notes and a very fresh menthol finish. The PM side almost fades behind the freshness on the second sip! That makes you want to come back to it willingly.

One of the most underrated rum. Fully tropical aged (only el dorado and velier are fully tropical) very intense rum, anise is not bitter and pungent as in continental aged PM, but very smooth and dense.

Needs some time in the glass but then shows multilayered flavors that come together, I think, very elegant. He has quite a lot of force to which you have to get used briefly. Unusually, I find the quite present saltiness. A few drops of water I also find not wrong.

I keep coming back to this rum, nose is very PM and is both intense and complex, most likely due to the long tropical ageing. It’s hard to distinguish the flavours as it’s quite concentrated but a bit of water opens it up. To be fair, it’s quite smooth when you compare to continentally aged to some PMs but it still has a packed flavour profile that many will not like (similar to caroni).
