La Confrérie du Rhum Rivière du Mât Private Cask 2006

"Even if I don't like french style rum, this one is nice" sums up how it wins people over. A molasses rum from Reunion at 50%, tasting of vanilla, wood and yellow fruit — banana and pineapple — with nutmeg, dark chocolate and a menthol coolness running through. Drier and spicier on the finish. Several tasters call it an easy, untypical sipper that surprises them.

Molasses rum from Guadeloupe. Am I a great friend of! Nose: Wow, unusual, complex and intense. Beautifully aromatic. Spicy-woody but also fruity. A slight menthol note brings in a dirty freshness. At the beginning salty-peppery with nutmeg, anise and some ginger, but next to it also equal sweetness of maple syrup and brown sugar. Pleasantly fruity with black currant, cherry and gooseberry. Muted at the back, slightly soapy and smoky at the same time. Exciting composition. 8,3 Palate: what immediately stands out are the distinct soapy notes, a menthol freshness and sweet-sour-tart molasses. There is also tobacco and young wood. Somehow it's also fruity, perhaps orange peel with some ginger. Again, nicely complex and not boring. A bit too much soap for me. 7,9

Thinking about the price tag you get a lot for your money in my mind. A naturally sweet and fruity profile with some wood and spices. Well balanced and the ABV has been integrated really well. The empty glass is really nice and I can pick up some mint and medicinal notes.

Very good, with a somewhat similar profile to Isautier, quite dry and spicy, earthy on the finish, not too sweet at all. Very good value for money, but...normally when I taste something I like I can't wait to get one (or more) bottles. That's not the case here. It's really good, but it doesn't stir my emotions in a profound way. I find myself being a little too logical in my appreciation, which is not ultimately a good sign. Very good and cheap, but it lacks that little je ne sais quoi to make it stand out. I like it but in the end I don't need a whole bottle.

Really nice thing and totally the surprise! On the nose still fruity, sweet spicy almost nougat chocolates and dried fruit and some mint. Taste then tropical fruits like pineapple and banana, menthol candy, dark chocolate and some chili. Very very round and elegant, then becoming a bit drier and spicier on the finish. Beautiful atypical easy sipping rum from reunion! I really like it! :)
