CDI New Yarmouth Jamaica 2005

People already deep into Jamaican funk are the crowd here. This New Yarmouth 2005 is a full-on ester bomb: glue, varnish, overripe mango and pineapple, with cookie dough and marzipan underneath. Several tasters note it opens gorgeous on the nose but loses steam on the palate, turning spicy and slightly bitter. At 55% it drinks at a comfortable strength for the intensity.

Funky New Yarmouth ester bomb, fades late Loved by high-ester fans for its glue-and-tropical-fruit New Yarmouth nose. The common gripe: it fades fast on the palate and a light astringency shows up late.

This is still one of my favorite New Yarmouths and I really regret not having bought a bottle back then. Liquid cookie dough, tropical fruit, a concentrated load of esters and simply delicious!

In the nose the full load of plastic, black olives and very fruity (ripe mango). With a little water comes chocolate. In the mouth then very herbaceous, fleshy notes appear a la TECA 2003 (help!!!!).Well done, but not mine.

A classic New Yarmouth with a wonderfully fruity, fresh estery nose and the accompanying cookie dough and marzipan. The palate is the same at first, but then quickly loses its fruitiness and switches to the spicy side. The alcohol is very well integrated. Another very good NY.

NY High Ester blind tasting with JNY20, JNY19, JNY15, JNE16 and TWJ 2009. Less fruity notes on the nose than the other representatives, but plenty of esters, glue and varnish. The same game on the palate. Slightly bitter at the end.

Very nice NY 2005, alternating between overripe mango and hearty meaty notes. Sounds heavy and unsexy, but is the opposite. Awesome.

Then let's slip in a New Yarmouth. A completely different world compared to the Guyana rums, but that's what I love about rum :-) Here we definitely have pineapple, but also a lot of esters, as well as glue and cookie dough.

11.02.2019 Enjoying some samples at home. Colour Light in colour. Nose Light wood, ester, workshop, overripe, fruits, light raisin, light citrus, light floral, light polish. Palate Warm, light wood, faint roasted, ester, medium dry, fruits, overripe, polish, faint salt, faint caramel, faint chocolate, faint honey. Finish Long and warm, light wood, light roasted, light polish, fruits, dried fruit, faint chocolate, light caramel. Need to rest for a good while to open up properly and the ABV to settle.

Litte NY side-by-side: For the 2005 vintage: on the nose the CDI 12y @55% very much hits more of the chemical notes. Funky with solvents. Very much overpowering fruity and cookie (dough) notes. The 13y CDI brother delivers more on the latter. Still funky with chemicals, but more fruits and a more pleasant nose. Also feels more intense as it is more complex. The full proof GC does the same but declasses the lower ABV CDI‘s on the nose. Brilliant NY profile! The BottleShop clearly shows it’s higher age. Cookie and cake notes with lots of vanilla are dominating here. Yet there is still ample funk and tropical fruits. Powerful and very tastey. Could spent hours with this nose. On the palate the younger CDI stays true to the nose: lots of esters and chemical notes. Some fruits (mango) and some smokiness. A bit weird but interesting. With 55% at good drinking strength while not lacking intensity just as the 13y. Again in the CDI 13y chemical notes are a bit more moderate with more cookie and fruit notes. More pleasing but still intense and funky. I prefer this one out of the CDIs. For the CG full proof again: absolute power house! Very intense with a nice balance of (lots of) funk and cookie and fruity notes. Excellent 2005 NY indeed. On the palate the BS again demonstrates what the 2005 vintage can do with some more time in the cask. More rounded out than the younger bottlings in my lineup but still very intense with ester, funky fruits and even more cookie notes excentuated with more vanilla from the cask. Looking at 2005 vs. 2009 - in general - 2005 brings more funk and esters to the table while 2009 provides even more cookie notes.

New Yarmouth

Avg Rating 8.7/10 96 Rums

New Yarmouth is Jamaican rum's best-kept secret. There are almost no photos of it, it makes Wray & Nephew White, the island's best-selling rum, and it is one of only three distilleries that can reach the highest esters. Collectors only really discovered it through aged 1994 vintages, which have become some of the most surprising rums on RumX.
